Thompson wasn't a Geelong person.
Matthews wasn't a Collingwood or Brisbane person.
Sheedy wasn't a Essendon person (unless you count him supporting them as a kid)
Parkin wasn't a bluebagger before joining Carlton.
Jeans wasn't a Hawthorn person.
Barassi wasn't a Carlton, North or Sydney person before taking on those positions.
This "Richmond people" talk is just feelgood talk. There's no substance behind it as we've seen over the past 26 years. You'd be stupid to restrict yourself to just 1/16th of the people out there especially when most of them haven't experienced what it takes to be a successful AFL club in the modern era. You employ the best people. It's a bonus if the best person happens to be a Richmond supporter.
I remember U19s coach Doug Searl who coached Knighter and a number of those who would go on to make up the core of the '95 side. (Freezer may have played U19s at Richmond too at one point IIRC). Searl won us U19 flags in 85 and 89 while the seniors were collecting spoons and got robbed of a third in the 87 GF by the North timekeeper blowing the final siren 2 minutes early as a Richmond player was running towards goal to put the Tigers in front. Anyway he was Pagan's main rival at U19 level yet unlike Pagan he was never given the opportunity to coach the Richmond seniors because he came from Fitzroy and the club wanted a "Richmond person". Heaven forbid we employ a coach the then cubs were familiar with, loved and would die for on the park

. This "Richmond people" talk is utter crap and can be as destructive and it could be constructive

. You employ the best people always!
