WEST Coast moved last night to hose down rumours dashing halfback David Wirrpunda wants to return to Victoria.
But it's been reported the Eagles may look at Richmond's Brad Ottens and Hawthorn's Nathan Thompson after ruling out Carlton's Lance Whitnall as a possible solution to their forward quandary.
Whitnall looks likely to stay with the Blues after the embattled centre half-forward met his manager Ricky Nixon yesterday.
Rumours have been abuzz in Perth this week that Wirrpunda, 25, who still has one year left on his contract, is keen to arrange a trade and join a Victorian side.
But Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett scuttled such talk.
"David has another year to run on a contract and it would be unlikely that he would move unless it was his wishes and another club showed enough interest in him," Nisbett said.
"I wouldn't think that's a possibility.
"He's had his interviews with John (Worsfold) and there was certainly nothing untoward in that. He finished the year off very well."
Wirrpunda, who came from Healesville, was taken as a compensatory pick by the Eagles in the 1996 pre-season draft, and has endured a mixed year.
He was dropped in Round 14 after a sluggish opening to the year, but returned a week later and was one of the Eagles' better performers in their run to the finals.
It was reported this week the Eagles had Ottens, out of contract at the Tigers, and Thompson, who is still under contract at the Hawks, in their sights.
West Coast is keen to secure an experienced key-position player to complement its developing forward structure.
Ottens has the option of signing either a two or three-year deal with the Tigers, but has yet to make up his mind.
Nisbett said last night the Eagles had not approached either player, but would be interested in dealing for the pair if they were available during trade week.
