Delisted player nominations for the draft
« on: November 19, 2008, 06:28:51 PM »
The AFL site has a list of the delisted players who have nominated for the National draft.

http://www.afl.com.au/News/NEWSARTICLE/tabid/208/Default.aspx?newsId=69910

Cockshell and Deluca are there. No Cartledge, Gourdis or Cass.

Danny Meyer and Fiora have also nominated.

Some wishful thinkers in that list. Fiora will be at the Port Magpies next year.

You would think Gourdis has either been told he's got a rookie spot or he's gone altogether.

Gourdis has kept training with the club so I would expect he'll be picked up as a rookie
Haven't heard that he's been training with anyone else either which would suggest he's been offered a spot

The fact that the club is willing to take the risk with Gourdis tells you something. If he gets picked up by someone else I doubt it will be the end of the world. There must be some huge doubts for us to delist him when we didn't have to and after only 1 year. If he was guaranteed to make it he'd still be on the list no doubt. There is no need to worry about Gourdis being picked up by someone else.

Would be a massive call for a club to do that without him even training at their club
He's already slipped through an entire draft into the PSD and now been delisted after only 1 year

We'll probably risk letting Gourdis slip to our last rookie pick too. Mind you there was talk at the time that Limbach was going to be re-drafted as a rookie by us and it didn't happen.

Gourdis and Cockshell are still training with Richmond

Richmond:
Adam Cockshell (Port Adelaide),
David Gourdis (Richmond),
Matt Davis (Coburg),
Nick Liddle (Coburg),
Jon Morris (Coburg),
Fortunato Caruso (Coburg)

It wouldn't surprise me if Cockshell is picked up at #70 and Gourdis, Davis and Morris end up as rookies. No Irish rookies means we have 5 rookie spots to fill with home growns. We've never really been a club to take more than say two U18s as rookies (lack of finances being the main reason why). Last year we didn't take any and went for recycled/older types :P.

Richmond should use its last 2 picks to pick up bottom age players that Francis Jackson & co. believe would be taken earlier in the draft next year. Picking up players like Cockshell seem like band aid solutions to me.

I've not read a lot lately...what happened with Fabian DeLuca. I oticed he's not on that list.
My parents bought me a Richmond jumper and enrolled me in a junior footy clinic in 1981...look at me now.

Deluca and Cartledge were told thanks but no thanks and are both no longer training with us.

Ramps, I agree Cockshell would be a band-aid solution but that may indeed be the reason why we could pick him up at 70  :-\. A band-aid ruck option at 198cm tall (yeah I know he's played mainly as a forward). Use him as back-up for Simmo and until Gus, Patto, Putt and/or Vickery or whoever we draft as a ruckman develop into genuine AFL standard ruckmen.

Anyway it's just feeling based on our past history of recycling at least one player. However if a young ruck like Rhys Stanley or Jarrad Redden surprisingly slip to 58 then the club may use 70 on Cockie instead if he's still around. We'll find out on Saturday.

All I can say is; Simmo for the love of god (and the RFC) please dont break down next year.

I hold a bit of hope out for Gus, dont think Patto is a ruck and believe Putt and any 2008 draftees will be a couple years away yet.

I do too Chuck. Gus got bagged heavily by some this year especially after that poor Elim final but people forget he missed most of the preseason due to that problem foot. We saw with even an experienced ruckman like Simmo in 2007 that ankle/foot injuries and a limited preseason can stuff up a big bloke's season because it robs them of their agility and jump. Give Gus a full preseason and then judge him this time next year.

Yeah I reckon we will pick up Cockshell as well, I agree wit MT's comments, we will have to get another tall until the others develop hopefully next year. He will be there as a just in case like Cartledge. Who knows if he does perform he may just get a regular spot.

The one I keep hearing about is us grabbing Tom Hislop with our last pick, he is training back with the Bombers so whats up with that, any thoughts??
