The thing is Rainesy hasn't added any further strings to his bow since his 2006 rising star year. What you see now is what you saw then except that after 2006 opposition clubs have worked him out. He holds onto the ball for far too long and runs himself and the team into trouble. If he was to give off to the first option, run hard off the ball and then receive the ball back and then kick long, he'd be a dangerous player but he doesn't do that. He just tucks the footy under his arm and runs like he's playing NRL so his teammates especially upfield have little idea what he's doing :-\.

Before he got injured he was ear marked for the middle, i still think that might be the best role for him , might also help him develop and give him more awareness and help him to dodge.

Rainesy would need to show he can win the hard contested ball if he was to be moved into the middle. At the minute he's struggling even in his customary HBF role. Today he was out of sorts terribly even at VFL level  :-\.
