I'm sorry, but NO he wasn't
Thursfied was our first pick in 2004, so we couldn't have taken Foley in that draft with Pick 4 as our next pick was 17.
Foley was taken in 2003 just after Aaron Davey

2004 Lids, Tambo, Meyer, Patto, Polo, McGuane, Limbach with Thursfield as a rookie
2005 JON, Hughes, Casserly & White in the PSD with rookies Graham, Humm & Howat
2006 Riewoldt, Edwards, Connors, Collins & Peterson with rookies Clingan & King,
2007 Cotchin, Rance, Putt, Gourdis in the PSD with rookies Collard, Silvester, Cartledge & Howat again
2008 Vickery, Post, Hislop, Cousins in the PSD with rookies Nahas, Gourdis, Browne & Gilligan

As per Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Foley_(footballer)

Nathan "Mick" Foley is an Australian rules football player. He plays as a midfielder for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League.

Foley was drafted by Richmond using pick 3 in the 2003 AFL Rookie Draft, from the Geelong Falcons. He had a debut to remember as the Tigers were thumped by Melbourne in a game which saw Tiger star Nathan Brown break his leg under the impact of Demon defender Matthew Whelan.

Sorry about the reminder of Browny's leg

Perhaps the confusion lies in the AFL's naming convention for the PSD & Rookie drafts.
Despite the fact they are held in the same year of the season just ending, they call it the rookie draft for the following season.

For example the rookie draft just gone was held in December 2008 but was called the 2009 Rookie Draft, I assume because you are picking rookies for the 2009 season. However the main draft is also picking players for the following season so it makes no sense really. I think in the past the PSD was a bit later on being held right before the season started.

My apologies, you are right!!!
For some reason as you say, the AFL season guide records the rookie draft in the following year so it actually has Foley as being picked up in the 2004 rookies draft and Thursty in 2005. ???

Reviewing Foley, what is even more bizarre is that he wasn't elevated in his first year at Richmond, he was a retained rookie in 2005.

And just 5 seasons later, he is probably our most damaging midfielder in full flight.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

I think it was more a list management thing that he wasn't elevated after one year, plus while he was showing very promising signs at Coburg, it was only glimpses and he still had a fair few things to work on like his kicks could be a bit up and under.

The one thing I always noticed about him watching Foley play for Coburg in his first year was that he always looked like he had all the time in the world to get rid of the ball. Even under heavy opposition pressure and needing a hurried disposal he still looked composed. It seems that this attribute transfers well to stepping up a level where the pace is faster. This same attribute is why I have hopes for Andrew Collins to make it as well. Different type of player though, but hopefully he can dominate at Coburg this year and break into the seniors for a few games.

Agree Smokey, but when you have 5 picks in the top 20 you'd want at least 3 of them to turn out for you!

At the risk of restarting WW3 which has already probably been done to death here on the 2004 draft, we have

Lids   Big tick   No brainer

Meyer Big Cross

Three in question with Tambling, Patto and Polo.  Of course peoples views vary and people would have some or all written off, regardless coming into their fifth season surely either this year or next the decision will be need to be made on their future.

 + Morton & Thomson (trade)
+ Thursty & McGaune (late picks)

not too bad

2005 is the year that shaping like it could cost Terry his job.
