Caro in today's Age...

The Richmond board met last night and put in place the bones of a senior coaching panel to oversee the biggest decision that has faced March since he took over as Richmond president in 2006.

The Tigers board will be represented on the sub-committee — most likely in the form of football director Tony Free — along with football boss Cameron.

An outside consultant will be brought in but no recruitment firm will take part in the process, which will be formalised over the coming week.

The massive decisions facing the club, the worst performed in the AFL despite some financial gains in recent years under March and Wright, will be thrashed out at a management retreat on the Gold Coast which will coincide with the Tigers' July 4 clash against Adelaide at Carrara.

Richmond assistant Wayne Campbell, another former captain, was also disappointed to be overlooked for the caretaker role, but is understood to remain a major part of the club's plans moving forward and should be encouraged to apply for the 2010 coaching position.

According to 3aw's whispers Ben Crowe is expected to be the outside consultant in the coaching subcommittee.

Yep you'd think that at first notion WA as I did. I am hopeful its not as it is our last chance to get some credibility out of a horrible year with the appointing of a decent coach and the direction that the club is hoping to attain.

If though there is nepotism shown by Free internally for Campbell and it influences the other members of the sub commitee expect
Campbell coach
and Nick Daffy to come back from his domestic life in Geelong to be Cambo's assistant.
It will be just like the mid 90's when Campbell and Daffy lived together.

Too many men from an era of no success.

You'd think Gale would be the next prez.

Sure they are successful in their endeavours away from RFC but running your livelihood and bread and butter to running a footy club the way you want to is two entirely different things.Too many of them there at the same time and it will be difficult to deflate those huge ego bags. For me they already have their bread and butter and their re emergence at RFC at such a time of uncertainty is merely for a manipulation of extra condiment such as jam and peanut butter to their burgeoning and voracious appetites that RFC hopefully won't be dumb enough to supply.

I thought March said we'd be following a full recruitment process to find the next coach?
Putting Tony Free in charge with one other bloke is hardly a comprehensive process, get someone independent for Geez sake

I have a really bad feeling about this

Deep breath folks  :thumbsup

the article says the Club has "put in place the bones of a senior coaching panel to oversee the biggest decision" the club has to make. I take "bones" to mean they have just started and will finalise over the next few weeks

It goes onto say "The Tigers board will be represented on the sub-committee — most likely in the form of football director Tony Free — along with football boss Cameron". Bottom line is the director responsible for football should be on that committee.

It also says clearly "an outside consultant will be brought in but no recruitment firm will take part in the process, which will be formalised over the coming week"

So they are going to go outside and get a consultant... I don't actually think you need a recruiting firm. Dare I say it and I am pretty sure but the Saints didn't use one when they selected Lyon and they seemed to be going along OK  ;D

Let's just wait and see who and how many (outside consultants) it is before we start getting to worried

RICHMOND

The net will be cast wide, but the Tigers now have another club in the race for Nathan Buckley. Soon to start interviewing prospective candidates.

Matthews rejects Tigers' call for help
Greg Denham | June 24, 2009 | The Australian

FOUR-time premiership coach Leigh Matthews is the second AFL great to reject an offer to join the panel in charge of selecting Richmond's new full-time coach.

The Brisbane-based Matthews, who cited logistical reasons as the main drawback in helping Richmond find the man to replace Terry Wallace, joins Kevin Sheedy in knocking back the Tigers' offer of an official advisory capacity.

Richmond remains undecided on whether it will rely on its internal sub-committee, or add an "outside" person for the second stage of the selection process to narrow the field of candidates.

Board approval following final interviews will be required following a recommendation from the sub-committee.

Richmond's initial coaching panel will consist of general manager of football operations Craig Cameron, football director Tony Free, chief executive Steven Wright and the club's development and learning manager, psychologist Jeff Bond.

North Melbourne premiership coach Denis Pagan has not been approached for his professional input, presumably because of his well-publicised desire to be considered for another senior coaching role after his time at the Kangaroos and Carlton.

Matthews, who has won flags as a coach with Collingwood and three times with the Lions, was guarded yesterday because of an exclusive commercial agreement he has with the AFL website.

But his message was clear: he is not interested in the Richmond coaching position.

Despite a media report that he would invite clubs without coaches beyond 2009 to phone him so he could entertain what they were offering, Matthews described his chances of coaching next year as 500-1. He said that while he might accept a phone call from either Richmond or the Kangaroos about their vacant coaching position, nothing should be read into that.

"The fact is some days I'm 100 per cent not interested and other days I'm only 99 per cent not interested," Matthews said on radio. "That's about where it stands, no one should be thinking of me as a potential coach."

He described speculation of him coaching at a third club as having no substance, and a total exaggeration. As well as writing his column on the AFL website, Matthews has an ongoing arrangement as a commentator with the Seven Network, which is believed to extend beyond this year. He resigned as Brisbane coach late last year.

Matthews had selected Richmond over North Melbourne as the club with the most potential for a new coach, but admitted that judgment was made after minimal thought.

Sheedy, a veteran of 886 games as an AFL player and coach, ruled himself out of returning to Punt Road next year as a permanent replacement for Wallace and interim coach Jade Rawlings.

He also excused himself from any involvement in a caretaker role with Richmond for the remaining 11 rounds, or in a role on the Tigers' advisory coaching panel because of work commitments he has with the AFL.

Sheedy, 61, will instead concentrate on the establishment of the AFL's 18th licence in western Sydney.

The AFL is expected to announce Sheedy's involvement with the new club from Sydney's west next month.

"I haven't put my hand up or applied for a senior job since Melbourne at the end of 2007," Sheedy said. "Down the track somewhere there may be someone who needs my help and I'm not in a position yet to never say never to coaching again."

Meanwhile, North Melbourne will not go outside the club when it this week appoints its coaching sub-committee. Chairman James Brayshaw will update directors tonight on No1 choice Nathan Buckley's availability and willingness to coach the club following several meetings with Buckley's manager Craig Kelly.

We really should get organised and get this process up and running- its not a good look waiting for blokes to get on a panel only to be rejected and for it to get into the papers.

Lethal on Tiger rejection (afl)

Lethal on Tiger rejection
By Jason Phelan 5:10 PM Wed 24 June, 2009

HE MAY be a four-time premiership coach, but the idea of helping a club choose a new top man is not one that appeals to Leigh Matthews.

Matthews was asked to join Richmond's hunt for Terry Wallace’s replacement last week, but told afl.com.au that the idea of helping the club find a new coach did not grab his imagination.

"I was only spoken to about the potential of being involved in the coaching selection process [at Richmond]. I hadn't even thought about it, but someone asked me and I thought it wasn't really for me,” Matthews said.

"If one of the clubs that I'd been involved with had asked, well you'd give it a second thought, but I haven't been involved with Richmond. It's nothing against the club, but I just haven't been involved there and I haven't got any great interest in that kind of vocation.

"If Hawthorn had asked me or Collingwood or the Lions you'd give it a second thought, but that's about it."

North Melbourne is also on the lookout for a new coach, but Matthews confirmed Richmond had been the only club to approach him.

He was bemused by reports in the media earlier in the week suggesting he had an interest in either of the senior coaching vacancies.

"I've got no intention of having any role with any football club next year," he said.

"I haven't been asked by anyone to coach, but I'm not seeking a coaching position. I've said that clearly.

Matthews said the desire to be involved in football is always strong, but denied he was looking to jump back into a senior position.

"It's a bit like: once a coach always a coach.

“There's part of Tommy Hafey that would still want to coach, there's part of Allan Jeans that would still want to coach, there'll always be a part of you that wants to coach, but when you get into ifs, buts and maybes that's when people start to take license with what you say.

"The reality is there's always a part of you that wants to coach, but that doesn't mean you'll ever coach again."
