Article from:  The Australian

.... However, should Sheedy get the Richmond gig for the next three years, he will inherit some unwanted baggage that he'll be stuck with until the end of 2010.

Former Western Bulldogs defender Jordan McMahon, for example, has another year left on his contract, believed to be worth up to $300,000 next year.

He was brought in under the Terry Wallace regime but has played just five games this season, and only one since round six because of poor form.

McMahon's failure at the elite level has proved a nightmare for Richmond, who gave up its 2007 national draft selection No19 for him, which the Bulldogs then used to recruit the promising Callan Ward.

Also contracted for next year are bit players Jake King, who has played only two games this season, and Jay Schulz, who has played four courtesy of ordinary form and a foot problem. Schulz has been extremely disappointing since his debut in 2003. The key-position player has been in and out of the side for most of his career, playing 71 games in almost seven seasons.

Of the 30 and over players, the Tigers are almost certain to offload Joel Bowden and Nathan Brown, who both come out of contract this season. Neither has played in the two rounds since Wallace left Punt Road, and their expected loss will give Richmond a hefty salary-cap relief.

Also at the crossroads is ruckman Troy Simmonds, who is in the fifth and final year of a lucrative contract which attracted him away from Fremantle, after he started his career with Melbourne. Simmonds, who has had knee problems in recent years, has also not been part of caretaker coach Jade Rawlings' plans in his first two games since taking over.

After nine fairly moderate games this season, a decision to shed Simmonds will largely be made after assessments over the final nine rounds of young ruckmen Angus Graham and Tyrone Vickery, as well as developing big man Andrew Browne.

Mark Coughlan, with six games this season, and Kayne Pettifer, with four, are also out of contract this September and appear certain to be delisted.

Graham Polak is another coming out of contract and he will not make the cut after spending most of this season in the VFL reserves.

One positive for Richmond's next coach is that the Tigers will tomorrow night play their seventh newcomer this season when Jayden Post makes his senior debut against Adelaide on the Gold Coast. The 18-year-old was the Tigers' second choice in last year's national draft.

Ok - Johnson, Bowden, Brown, Simmonds, Pettifer, Cogs and Polak almost certain to be delisted I think there will be a number of players who will dodge a bullet this year.

Players like King, McMahon and Schulz will be saved due to their contracts and the sheer amount of players lined up infront of them. Similiarly JON and Hughes may be retained not because of form but again because of the amount of older players that need to be delisted above them.

My concern is replacing the players we delist. It is easy to say wipe the slaye clean and get rid of 12 players in one fowl swoop but it is hard enough to engineer the sheer quanity of players to replace those being removed but to then find the quality of players is a daunting task indeed.

This task will only get more challenging when draft experts say that with the extraction of the 17 year olds from this draft you have effectively reduced the draft by a 'round'. In addition they are saying that beyond the 3rd round talent is slim indeed.

So if we are going to gain the quantity and quality of picks we need to substitute for the 7 (minimum) players we will require we will need to -

1. Secure an additional early pick in the draft with 4 or fewer wins giving us 4 picks in the first 3 rounds

2. Trade aggressively for picks (look at non-essential players of worth such as Thursfield, Tuck, Raines)

3. Utilize the Pre Season and Rookie drafts heavily.

Interesting period in our rebuilding

Stripes...the recruiters may have to get smart about it and possibly recruit some hard bodied 'older' age recruits along the lines of Dalziel or Liam Anthony ...Alwyn Davey...etc...or even like Silvester....given that there is a lack of quality 17 yos this year.

Remember the Tiges will probably bring in Nahas and subject to how he goes for the rest of the year, Silverster off the rookie list.

Kids who are early 20s playing in comps against senior men and who are afl ready but for some reason were either overlooked or had issues that may now have been overcome.

You cannot go out and get 12 new players...Pagan did that...i think only Scotland remains to this day...it didnt get the Blues far.

What is even worse is that I saw Scully interviewed on Footy Show last night and he said he is a Tigers supporter....damn..how do we get him?

Remember Joel is on the veterans' list and outside the senior list so that's one less to replace. So next year instead of 40 listed players (excluding rookies) we'll have 39 (38 + Richo on the vets list).

Outs:
senior list - Johnson, Brown, Simmo, Cogs, Petts, Polak, JON, Hughes
vets list - Bowden
rookies - Silvester

So that's 8 senior list plus 1 rookie spot freed up

Ins:
rookie promotions - Nahas
National draft - picks 3, 19, 21, 37, 53, Josh Free (F/S)?
PSD - pick 2
Plus 3 additional rookies

Unbelievable to consider that we have to keep McMahon on the list next season.
He should be one of the first cut, including the vets & Polak.

Thanks a lot Terry. >:(

Btw when did Simmo have a lucrative contract?  ???. He got 5 years but his salary was hardly way above average for an experience player.

It was 1.2 million over 5 years, which is peanuts for a ruckmen

Yep, Stu's right Simmons has paid his way and Danny's right history is all the research we need. Name the full list of players we have traded for in the last ten years and you will understand why we should not trade national draft pick and should only pick up ddiscards in the pre season draft just like PA.

Just to jog your memory - Thomson and Hislop.

Dont get me wrong, happy to trade player for player.

I dont need research i just use common sense.

Armitage has played what 10-15 games in 3 years.

Secondly and even more important than point 1, we are in this mess because of stupid decisions like giving away draft picks for hacks like Hislop, Thompson and McLovin.

It also means Patrick Smith's claim that his expected loss will give Richmond a hefty salary-cap relief is rubbish as only half his salary counts.

It must be Browny's portion of the two that will give us salary cap relief  :eyebrow

Joel would still be getting 400-500k per year as a senior player
The TPP saving may only be 200-250k per year, however the additional money saved could go towards another pretty highly ranked assistant or development coach or a significant investment into recruiting
