The day Gasper quit the club he was told that Thursfield & McGuane were perfoming at the same standard as Gasper & that he wouldnot be getting another senior game while they were fit & playing.

Here is a comparison of the 3 players at that time:

21 year old Thursfield's last 5 full games before his knee injury he had 46 disposals, 12 marks and 5 tackles.
20 year old McGuane's last 5 games before Gaspar retired he had 47 disposals, 17 marks and 14 tackles.
31 year old Gaspar's last 5 games he had 58 disposals, 21 marks and 11 tackles.

Statistically he wasn't having any more impact on the game than the 2 rookies and in addition he had become very slow, unable to keep up with the leading forwards.  I think it was very sound decision to drop him and give the kids a try - he had nothing more to add on the senior field but he could have been a valuable mentor at Coburg.  Shame his ego didn't didn't see it that way.

Actually, thinking more about it - it probably speaks volumes about the difference in the type of person he was/is compared to Joel Bowden, Mark Chaffey and Greg Tivendale.

Good points Smokey but they shouldnot  have said anything & let him play out the year & then everyone would have benefit in the longrun.
Richmond have a bad way of treating players overall

That doesn't make sense, they wanted to drop him to Coburg
So you think they should have just dropped him and not explained why? or not dropped him at all becasue they didn't want to say anything?

I won't disagree TM that our history of dealing with this stuff is not great but I don't know how else we could have done the Gaspar deal.  Sadly, it was him that didn't handle the reality of his football age - something that the other guys handled maturely, professionally and with club spirit.  Gaspar is one guy I find it hard to sympathize with.

and furthermore, why dont you go and ask one of the players if you doubt me or Tigermonk.
I know EXACTLY what they would say ;)

And therein lies the problem jackstabber. Who gives a fk what the players think?

Gaspar's best years were when he was up for a new contract renewal.

And dont get me started about the first game in his last season against the bulldogs when he refused to chase his direct opponent running into goal

He was an expired joke.

Funny how the same people who rate Bowden also seem to believe Gaspar was shafted

I rate Bowden and don't believe Gaspar was shafted.

No idea if he actually was or not. Just my opinion.
What is funny is claiming opinion as being fact.

LMFAO. Footy boards are for opinions. Go back to nerd school

The younger players took it pretty bad, as history now shows

You've been following the club long enough to know we treat these players with kids gloves when we should be setting high standards for them.

We started that year very badly and when the club decided to ride it off, there was no room for blokes that werent going to be kept on the following season. It was exactly the right message to the young ones that the club was going to back the likes of Thursfeld over AA backmen like Gaspar. Nothing burns up a young player more than being held back because of some bloke like Gaspar living off his repuatutaion and his best years well behind him.

You're effectively saying that the young ones didnt want to be handed their chance. They should follow Gaspar out the door

And back to my original point....

What does it say about the culture of our playing group that they didnt see it as an opportunity to seize their chance and step up into senior football but instead sooked about their mate being demoted ???

and its a disgrace that we are second last on the ladder.

Yes, it's terrible, but as you saw yesterday, there is some hope, that the last five years hasn't been a total waste of time.  The list had to be turned over and looking at them yesterday, quite a few of them will still be here in a few years time.

You wrote this 24 hours before all the positive stuff you posted last night.
Why can't you be consistent?
Reading your stuff was great to see last night, but it would be good if you had a consistent train of thought rather than hopping on and off bandwagons  ::)
Worse than a woman the way you change your mind.
Hope to see more positive stuff from you  :thumbsup

Exactly.

One player I gained more respect for when he retired was Tivendale, the way he played at Coburg was a credit to him and is a great example of how a man acts when he is faced with a challenge.

Richmond need to pull away from Coburg & create thier own VFL side. Too many Richmond listed players playing below thier level in the VFL 2nds & are losing interest
