GERARD WHATELEY: Richmond surrenders dignity by going the knuckle
August 17th, 2009

THESE football matters are a gruelling test of character as much as skill.

How do you respond in the face of scrutiny? What can you find when the criticism mounts? When adversity is upon you how do you act? With courage, determination and pluck? Or with cowardice?

Richmond showed itself to be the latter on Saturday afternoon. The team manufactured 10 minutes of effort and enthusiasm for departing veteran Joel Bowden. Then rolled over.

Worse. The Tigers surrendered their dignity and went the knuckle. Down by 50 points some in the faithful howled, others cringed. It was embarrassing. It was unbefitting of a league team.

On the evidence before us the next coach has little to work with. At least he will face no resistance in dismantling the remaining facade.

For Jake King and Tom Hislop they will learn there is no honour is punching superior opponents. Or they will not be seen on an AFL field again.

Collingwood showed itself a team of purpose. How they must have wished to punch on with their pitiful antagonists. The Magpies are made of more disciplined stuff. They countered with goals. A great many of them

We don't get Gameday in Sydney.  Was Jade on?  Did they ask him any good questions?  Did he give any good answers?

I only heard snippets on the radio. I think Jade said we could have put our head over the ball more.

Richo on Vega this morning hit back saying it was just one of those games where there were spotfires and when you're winning you're better off just keeping your mouth shut. Not sure why Nick bothered.

Thanks one-eyed!  From watching the game on the box, it looked like we missed our younger mids (Collo, Cotch, Whitey and Foley).  I thought Cuz was restricted from early in the game.

I did think that we had a chance to win the melee, but was disappointed with the two Richmond players (I think Joel was one) who didn't jump in and help when Jake was gang tackled

I thought we had too many taggers and not enough creators.  Lots of times I thought we could have attacked the Collingwood ball carrier, but our guys just ran off with their man instead.

I was hanging out to read Jade's post-mortem of the Sydney game in EOTT, but was disappointed to read that he didn't want to inflict any more hurt on the members!  I was looking for some comment about our mid-field set ups, but, maybe that was asking for too much

Yep Maxwell knows all about cowardice. Oh well he'll learn the hard way that the wheel turns so you shouldn't open your big mouth. In 3-4 years time our cubs and a Watts will be bigger and stronger while Maxwell will be older and slower.

Richo hits back at Maxwell over melee
18:43 AEST Mon Aug 17 2009

Sidelined Richmond star Matthew Richardson has hit back at Collingwood's Nick Maxwell for accusing the Tigers of instigating the melees in Saturday's AFL game at the MCG.

Maxwell, the Magpies captain, took aim at the Tigers on Sunday when he labelled them "pretty average" for their approach.

"That's the way they decided to go, but I thought it was pretty average considering we couldn't fight back and considering they weren't prepared, a few of their blokes, to put their head over the ball when it counted," Maxwell said on the Seven Network.

Richardson, who is sidelined after recent knee surgery, refuted any suggestion Richmond's actions were cowardly and said on Monday there was no need for Maxwell to have made the comments, especially given the Magpies won the game by 93 points.

"I don't know whether Nick needed to be making those sort of comments after the game," Richardson told radio station Vega.

"Gutless? I don't think so. I just think it was one of those games where a few wrestles developed.

"I don't know what was gutless about it.

"I think when you're winning and you're winning well I don't think you need to come out and make comments like that after a game, so I'm not sure why Nick bothered really."

Richardson made his remarks before the AFL match review panel cited 20 players - 10 from either side - for their part in the melees in the second quarter, including Maxwell.

Maxwell said on Sunday it would be unfair if many Magpies copped fines.

"There were certain instigators that were a part of that and they're the ones that should be fined, not the ones that were trying to break it up," he said.

Richmond's Jake King and Tom Hislop were both reported during the game, for striking Collingwood's Alan Didak and Shane O'Bree respectively.

Wasn't Nick Maxwell the player who actually ran past the ball to hip and shoulder a teenage Eagles player and bust his jaw?

Hmmm, he has an interesting take on courage or a double standard.......

When was the last time Richmond had a player reported let alone suspended? Not sure our track record is one of sniping.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

He did attempt what would be loosely called a fight with Hislop while Hislop was on the deck, but Hislop managed to stand up, and then promptly threw Maxwell to the ground and held him down well until it seemed Maxwell surrended.  ;D   The big tough man lauded by the media got absolutely pantsed by Tommy.
