Tigers punt on Johnson

by Riverine Herald
December 02, 2016

Echuca's Hakeem Johnson was one of 11 footballers from the Goulburn Valley region who attended an academy screening day run by the Richmond Football Club on November 12.

The AFL club hosted the event at its Punt Road oval headquarters as part of its Next Generation Academy Program, which has actively engaged in a number of sporting events within the Indigenous community including Echuca’s Reconciliation Cup Day.

Johnson, 15, played the 2016 season for North Bendigo in the under 16s and was selected in this year’s under-15 Victoria-Tasmania kickstart squad to play in a tournament during the national Indigenous and multicultural championships in April.

Sixteen footballers aged 11-17 were selected for the screening day and were chosen based on their performances at the Richmond academy come and try talent days during September in Swan Hill and Shepparton, identified through the Murray Bushrangers or Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup or nominated by their community.

Players were exposed to the Tigers’ elite sporting environment and completed a number of high performance testing activities which focused on speed, agility, vertical jump and endurance through a beep test.

Johnson and the other participants also received a tour of the club, a personal identity session, a lesson on nutrition and strength and mobility programming, and enjoyed basic skill training in kicking and ball handling.

Richmond’s football talent general manager Dan Richardson was eager to see the academy program grow and engage more participants over time.

‘‘We hope to provide significant opportunities to both boys and girls who are not currently playing football or are under-represented at the competition’s highest level,’’ he said.

Players will return to the club in January, having built on their skills and progressed as young players.

17 January 2017

Damien Villarosa has been appointed Richmond Academy coach, overseeing the Club’s Next Generation Academy Program.

Villarosa joined the Tigers is 2016, as Education and Training Manager of the Richmond Institute.

His position at the Club will expand to include both the Richmond Academy and Richmond Institute roles in 2017.

He brings extensive industry experience to the Richmond Academy and has worked in the AFL talent pathway since 2001, including the Victorian Metro State Academy and the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup.

Villarosa is a former teacher with a master’s degree in Exercise Science and has coached football at Essendon Keilor College.

In his new position as Richmond Academy coach, Villarosa will be responsible for fostering the development of participants from a character, physical and technical capacity.

He will also work closely with the dedicated coaching staff across Richmond’s Academy region – AFL Central, Central Murray, Goulburn Murray, North East Border, Sunraysia and Wimmera Mallee.

Richmond's General Manager – Football Talent, Dan Richardson, welcomed the news.

“We felt Damien was a perfect fit for this role,” Richardson said

“Our vision is for our Academy players to wear a Richmond jumper one day and Damien’s passion, knowledge and experience in talent development will certainly help us achieve this.”

Tiger hunt on

Sunraysia Daily

RICHMOND footballer Nathan Drummond hopes the club’s Next Generation Academy can unearth some Sunraysia talent for the Tigers.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who hails from Mooroopna in Richmond’s zone, compared the academy to those already set up for clubs in the northern states.

”We see clubs like the Giants and the swans have zone academies and they have seen some good players out of that,” he said.

Wentworth star heads for Richmond to chase the dream: Going to town

Angus Dearlove
Sunraysia Daily
Feb 15, 2017

WENTWORTH appears to be facing a 2017 SFNL campaign without one of the competition’s brightest young stars.

Reigning McLeod medallist and Mildura and District Real Estate Rising Star winner Derek Eggmolesse-Smith, 18, has moved to Melbourne to further his football.

It is understood Eggmolesse-Smith will look to break into Richmond’s VFL side, working closely with the club’s Next Generation Academy, while also playing as an overage player with the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup.

Richmond and Rumbalara Football Netball Club will officially work together to help strengthen the talent pathway for Indigenous and multicultural footballers in northern Victoria.

Rumbalara has a proud history as an Indigenous-led sporting club based in Shepparton, a region which fits inside Richmond’s Next Generation Academy (NGA) zone. Richmond’s zone includes the Goulburn Murray, Bendigo, Sunraysia, and North Central areas of Victoria.

The partnership, which will assist in identifying and attracting the best young Indigenous and multicultural talent into Richmond’s NGA, while at the same time strengthening RFNC, was announced today.

One of our Next Generation Academy kids Mackenzie Cowley, who is just 14 years old, is already playing senior footy for Tongala. He kicked 3 goals a few weeks back against Shepparton East in the Murray Football league.

Named as a sub, Cowley, a candidate for the honour of being the youngest Tongala player to play seniors at 14 years of age, got about three quarters of game time and impressed in attack.

Here he is when playing for our Academy team:
