* Losing another close game by a point is a bitter pill to swallow but one we have to live with.

* Happy with our desperation and ability to tackle the opposition. It was one thing we weren't overtly happy with over the course of the season. Guys game into the game with an intention to tackle and we ended up with 73 which put up No.3 in the AFL. Freo, who are one of the better tackling sides, had 65 so we beat them in that area. It's part of our gameplan. Once we get our tackle numbers up then there's no doubt it will prove dividends in forcing turnovers from the opposition which is a strength of ours.

* Last two minutes were obviously disappointing.

Dimma said we obviously had to get numbers behind the ball which didn't result on Friday night. So there's a mistake there; one we'll rectify from a communication point of view. 

One thing we wanted to do is force a secondary stoppage which we did by numbers around the ball.

Griffin was playing as a forward and was matched up in Nahas  . Obviously a mismatch.

Next thing which is disappointing is that the umpire missed our ruckman (Maric) being shepherded out of the contest. That should have been a free to Ivan. That non-umpire decision allowed a free third man up for Freo and a free hitout.

The next thing which was disappointing was Freo are trying to hit the ball outside so we should be trying to keep them inside. Jackson is on Fyfe and Nahas is now on Hill. They (Fyfe and Hill)  get the outside space which is really really poor. Petterd drops back behind the ball (10m from the stoppages) because that's where Freo want the ball to go but the free hitout sends the ball 20m and over Ricky's head and with Freo players on the outside running forward they get the easy clearance and it's a diabolical result for us.

Next up is the throw-in the back pocket. Normally we are very good in this area and we have conceded the second fewest defensive 50 scores. Dimma points to the huge hole in front of the Freo goal. He said normally you don't have six forwards up the ground in this situation; unfortunately we had six forwards in this case. That means there's a communication breakdown amongst our players. So effectively we as coaches aren't doing a good enough job to get that communication across to the players. So that's our bad.  Too much space but we get lucky first time around that the ball runs on and hits the post with Freo players goal side. Ivan is calling for a spare man in the defensive hole but the throw-in is too quick (another communication failure) and we all know what happens next. Sure Houli could've been closer to Ballantyne, Jackson could have picked it up, etc. Lots of what-ifs. Fact is we didn't get the job done and learn another harsh lesson. We need to get better in this area.

* So we lick our wounds and get on with it and look forward to the enormous challenge of Geelong this weekend. We think we are a great chance.

At least Dimma admitted that there were errors that needed addressing. A good dissection of the points he showed, even admitting that the coaching staff needed to be better.

* Disappointing to go down by 44 points. Unacceptable loss. We thought we were competitive in the first half. 5-6 minutes prior to half-time Geelong kicked 4 unanswered goals which got them back into the game. We thought we started the 3rd quarter okay; obviously the loss of Ivan and Ty was disappointing. Clearances dominance certainly turned around with McGuane being forced to ruck against two monsters in West and Blicavs. Once Ivan came back on he wasn't quite the same with that ankle injury. We felt we didn't play well in the second half but there are areas which we can fix.

* We have things we call "fundamental mistakes". Normally you have 2-3 per game; this week we had 9. Dimma then showed a couple of examples:

(i) Chaplin had a terrific night overall but in this instance he had the chance to walk the loose ball by the boundary over the line in the first quarter. Sure the ump could ping him for deliberate but we prefer he did  take it across and play the percentages and let the ump make the call; if he gets pinged then so be it. Instead Chappy gathers and turns in and under pressure gives off a long loopy handball which hits the deck and is gathered by a Cat for a goal. That's an example of a uncharacteristic mistake (No.3 on the night) - one that give the opposition an easy goal and a momentum changer. It's great for the opposition and a zapping one for our confidence at the moment.

(ii) The next example (No.4 on the night) was the play that lead to the West goal late in the 2nd qtr. Houli does a good spoil on Stokes towards the boundary creating a 4-vs-1 situation in our favour. Looking at it you think Richmond should have this covered (Dimma almost laughs while saying this thinking about how badly we screwed this up). Grimes attacks the ball to heavily and leaves it behind; he should've killed it. Bachar then runs forward of the ball too much expecting us to win it; we don't and Stokes wins possession, handballs to West and there's a goal to Geelong that should never have happened.

(iii) Fundamental mistake No.5 on the night was at the time Vlastuin went off with the blood rule (late 2nd qtr). A Geelong player had the ball on the wing; we had everyone manned up with Cotch a loose man and Vickery on Smedts. No way should a Geelong player be able to simply lead up and mark out in front. However, there's a communication breakdown between Trent and Ty and there's a easy lead-up for Smedts which is really disappointing and it's a really bad clanger for us. It's a concentation error, communication error, etc ... you name it. Once again it's a easy mistake and one a AFL footballer shouldn't be making.

(iv) Easy goal No.7 on the night (3rd qtr) - fundamental error - Grimes coming in 3rd man up tries to mark the ball in a very dangerous position (top of opposition goalsquare). If you had asked Grimes one second afterwards he would've given the correct answer on what he should have done; if you asked him just before he did it he should've known the correct answer. That was of course to spoil the ball either out of bounds or through for a point. Dylan does neither trying to mark it and it's a disaster for us gifting a easy goal to them. It was right before 3/4 time from memory and gives Geelong a lift.

* So all us we gave 9 of these easy goals to Geelong which is 54 points. Now Geelong are an outstanding side don't get me wrong but these are things we could've have controlled and done better. They are readably fixable but also disappointing that we are still making these sort of errors when we shouldn't be.

* We've got a great chance to bounce back this week against Port Adelaide and we are looking forward to the challenge. They are in red hot form at 5-1. We are 3-3 so still in the hunt. We've just got to get players in the side that are hungry and ready to go and look forward to taking Port Adelaide on over at AAMI Stadium.

Every team turns the ball over. Some of those goals count from us turning the ball over going into forward line and they sweep it forward. The ones Dimma has highlighted and obviously listed in his 9 are the dumb mistakes we make that the good sides don't. Bad kicks happen sometimes but stupid decisions like those covered should not.

* Good to win away. Always start behind the eight ball regarding crowds. Dimma reckons it's a 3-4 goal advantage to the home side.

* Stats:
- Won contested ball and tackle counts. We've improved over the past 4 weeks in this area we weren't going well in.

 - Centre bounce was important. We're #1 in the AFL and Port were #2 going into the game. Pleased with what the Big O and Ivan brought on the night (sic) [ed. it was a day game Dimma  ]. Won that 17-12 including scoring 4.2-26 from centre bounces to Port's 0.1-1 which is a massive result for us.

- Port were the AFL's #3 in transition from defensive 50. We kept them to 18% when they were averaging 35% which is another good result. Port also only scored 1.2-8 when they had been #1 defensive attacking side over the past 4 weeks. Another great result for us.

* Room for improvement:
- Opposition forward 50 stoppages still an issue. Wasn't a day again. Port won 5 of them. Given we have more numbers in this area of the ground it was a concern. Port kicked 3.1-19 from them; granted two of those were from free kicks. Normally it's a strength of ours but it's been a weakness over the last couple of weeks [ed. Freo game says hi]. We'll have walk through sessions to rectify those.

- First possession win to clearance numbers was poor. Got our hands on the ball 40 times but only cleared the ball 31 times. We've just got to make sure we get better this week.

- Port still had 15 marks inside 50. You can handle one mark but when they have 2-3 from multiple mark to mark to mark it's a coach killer.

* Vlastuin - credit to him on winning the rising star nomination this week. Not only is he going to be a very good player but he's also shown he can play the level. Dimma highlighted Flossy's chase where he was well behind the Port player (Broadbent) but did enough to catch up and put pressure on the ball carrier's kick. Stopped a golden goal scoring chase for Port.

* Happy with our defenders cleaning up of the loose ball this week. They were disappointing against Geelong; not so much effort but technique.

* Midfielders were reasonable on the day. Happy with their intensity and coverage. We were able to outnumber Port at the contests.

* Grigg did a fantastic job containing Boak. Please with Shaun's overall game. Dimma showed a snippet from the game highlighting Grigg's work.

* Impressed with our forwards defensive pressure. Dimma showed an example where it looks like Port has an easy outlet kick from their defensive 50 but McGuane still is able to get to the contest; it's why McGuane is playing some really good footy for us at moment; and then he has a second effort. Dusty then does a terrific chase and tackle which is something he has improved in, Ivan then passes for Knights to goal (who unfortunately gets injured).

* Overall a really good effort for guys to go over there against a 5-1 side and to win by 40 points which is a great result.

* Looking forward to the Melbourne game. They obviously haven't had great news coming out of there so they'll come out all guns blazing. So we've got to make sure we take it but importantly dish out some of our own.

Hardwick believed a lack of defensive urgency was a contributing factor in Saturday night's loss to Essendon in the Dreamtime at the 'G match.
