VIDEO: Dimma's dissection for round 10:

‘Dimma’ explains tough efforts, and a strong defensive game, including forward-half turnovers and improved tackle numbers were key contributors to the Tigers’ win over Adelaide on the weekend.

VIDEO: Dimma's dissection for round 13:

‘Dimma’ says the Tigers ability to win the contested ball and force turnovers in the Bulldog’s forward 50 led to Richmond’s convincing win over the Western Bulldogs on the weekend.

VIDEO: Dimma's dissection for round 15:

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2013-07-10/dimmas-dissection-r15

* North's first quarters are one of their better quarters and we were reasonably happy with how it went. However in the 2nd quarter, it just all fell to pieces in regards to them kicking 8 goals to our 5 behinds = effectively game over at half-time.

* Whenever you get a run of goals against you, there's usually a key element that tells you why and that was definitely the case this week (see below).

* Game decided in 18 minutes (in the 2nd qtr). 41 points of the 62 point difference occurred during this 18 minute period. Defensive 50 contested ball during this period was 5-10 (ie. ability of the opposition to win the ball in our defensive half). So that was poor. Normally we are No.2 in the AFL at this so it was diabolical for us.

* Six of the 7 North goals in this period came directly from them winning contested ball inside 50. They scored from 8 of their 11 inside 50s during this period. Once again normally a strength of ours but we just had a really poor day. So you can see the trend/"key" already - we weren't able to get our hands on the footy. We had one number back then two numbers back then three then back to one but we still couldn't win the contested footy.

* 5 of their 7 goals came from forward half-half chains (2 centre-forward turnovers, 1 F50 turnover, 2 from F50 stoppages).

* Overall a poor period of play in 18 minutes of play is the reason why we lost the game.

* First goal of 2nd qtr - ball won out of the centre by North. We had a spare back (Newy). Lost two critical contests - Newy and Batch on half-back and then Aaron Black marking in the goalsquare without us getting a hand on the ball in a 3-vs-3 contest. So goal scored from critical contests loss.

* 2nd goal - North win possession in our forward line and are just too good with the handball chain through which is a rarity to go the length of the ground. Harvey then hits up Black who nails a 55m goal. Some opposition goals are just too good to stop and that was one of them.

* 3rd goal - Our kick-in. Poor contest 60m out by Grigg and then Batch dives on the ball and is correctly pinged for holding the ball followed by a 50m penalty. So another critical contest lost, free kick to the opposition and an easy goal to them.

* 4th goal - Foley's clearing kick inside defensive 50 doesn't go to the boundary and stays in. North player centres it, Whitey does well to spoil it but he punches it into the centre corridor rather than towards the boundary. Result is a snap goal to North. So we had two chances to kill the ball but we didn't.

* 5th goal - Defensive 50 stoppage. Dusty kicks it off the ground OOTF. Ball comes back in and Chaplin gives a free kick away to Petrie. Another goal given away in their forward 50.

* 6th goal - Another defensive 50 stoppage. Lose the stoppage despite having a two numerical advantage at the stoppage. Ball goes to the goalsquare, Batch should have punched the ball through but we lose the 3-vs-2 contest = North goal. So two contests where we had the numerical advantage yet we still couldn't kill the ball. Another poor one by us.

* 7th goal - Another defensive 50 stoppage and another goal to them. We had two spares but in this case the opposition was just too good. They broke a couple of tackles and Ziebell kicks a goal.

* 8th goal -  Yet another defensive 50 stoppage which results in a goal for them. Lose the stoppage, ball kicked deep to a 2-vs-2 but two of our guys take each other out and the North player runs into an open goal.

* So all up:
(i) We didn't take advantage of numerical superiority at the contests.
(ii) We failed we win critical contests.
(iii) We failed to kill the ball when we had the opportunities to do so.

These are errors we shouldn't be making as a footy club where you give up 8 goals in a quarter.

* Gold Coast this week up in Cairns. It hasn't been a happy hunting ground for us and we are the only side not to have beaten in the Suns. We're looking forward to the challenge.

Anybody see Dimma in the box last weekend?

I swear he looked clueless and resigned. No visible anger or clues as to how to change the game plan. Very out-coached.

A fair few deep breaths from Dimma during that. Not a happy coach :nope.

As much as we stuffed up giving up all those soft goals in the back half despite more numbers, Dimma more importantly needs to address what happened at the other end of the ground so the ball doesn't end up in our back-half so easily. We need to be smarter and more varied with our forward entries when the opposition push extra tall numbers back themselves. Bombing long lazily time and time again might work against the short and weak backlines of the Saints, Dogs and other bottom 4 sides but it's a recipe for disaster against anyone half-decent. We were sucker punched all day by North on the counter and had no answer to it  :scream

Yeah he was out coached

But to say there wasn't any "visible anger" then you obviously didn't see AFL360 last night when they showed him in the box, didn't need to be an expert in lip reading to know what he said quite a few times  ;D

Nah I was studying but record it every night so will check it out today. Glad to hear that at any rate. Every time they showed him on the weekend he looks like a fish out of water. I wanted to see some fury.

* In the middle, got smashed in ground ball gets. Despite that our contested ball loss was just -6. This was partly due to hitouts to advantage +12 (Hampson effect). Despite this ruck dominance and winning the clearances 47-30, we were unable to convert this into scoring opportunities, scoring just 2.4 from clearances to the Suns 3.5.

* Inside our forward 50, we won just 7 loose ball gets for a score of 1.1 (The Suns won 15 L.B.G. in their F50). This was the reason for contested possession loss in our F50 (26-35) and a major reason why we were only able to score from 33% of our forward opportunities. Never going to win games with those stats.

* In our defensive 50, we lost the contested ball 24-31, again through our inability to win the Loose Ball Gets that resulted in the Suns scoring from 56% of their forward entries. We lose LBG 7-14 and from the Suns 14 LBGs in their forward 50 they were able to kick 2.7.

* Defensive spread was poor. Lack of accountability (mentioned examples of Grigg and Griffiths) allowed the Suns a loose man to play out of our forward line too easily turning an attacking play by us into a scoring opportunity for the Suns.

* Griffiths had a terrific game but we had to take a tall off to add more ground level speed and as far as matchwinning ability Griffo was behind Jack and Vickery. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
