if it was the other way around you would be saying that we played a soft unaccountable game.

football is a multifaceted game, but simpletons will concentrate on one thing.

Quite clearly our tackling and pressure was down in the first month, no way to dance around this. Maybe Im a simpleton but tonight it is clearly the reason we stayed in it and had a chance to pinch when in the second and 3rd quarters we only got it inside 50 13 times.

yet we lost.
why is that?
 because freo spread and worked hard to create space through the middle stages ogf the game.
how many goals did they get from a chain of uncontested posessions, yet we had more tackles?

no one aspect is the magic bullet.

to carry on about one stat is simpleton town, and i never thought you did. but hey if you want to put your hand up for that......

as i have said, a low tackle count is a symptom of the problem, not the problem.

whatever al, I respect you as a poster but i think you are lowering yourself with this. Just imagine how much more we wouldve lost by if we didnt tackle and pressure like we did? is the way Im looking at it.

The defensive application was faultless and I would love to see that week in week out, it was the silly unforced errors that cost us in the end. I cant recall them kicking too many goals from a chain of uncontested possies tbh, they seemed to work hard for their goals and got several lucky ones imo.
Another reason they beat us in run and spread was that Crowley dominated Lids our prime mover and the fact that Vlastuin and Helbig came in and dont offer as much run as Conca and King do at this stage of their development.
 While we're playing the hypotheticals, do you think we wouldve won an open uncontested shootout against them over there? I think we wouldve gotten flogged.

actauly the defensive application was not faultless. with such a discrepancy in uncontested possessions, and when freo were able to score so much from unmarked players taking marks inside 50 it shows that our defensive aspect fell down once again when it counted.

the stats may show that out tackle count was up, but our defensive workrate was well down at times.

this is what i have have said time and time again. its's not about one stat, one aspect or one facet.
it's about the overall performance, and too many times we allowed freo players to run free and get easy possessions. they got too many easy goals and not on the fast break, which is different again. how many of the shots on goal from their smalls were from uncontested marks rather than crumbing goals? and marks from a good spot too, not deep in the pockets.

(im still unsure about the hypotheticals Im supposed to have raised. )

Agree to disagree, I stated my reasons as to why I think they ran and spread better than us and dont feel that was why we lost.

personally I think its a bit rich for a couple of posters to come out and say see we tackled well and still lost - all in an effort to show that our  horrendously low tackle count in the first month is/was a non issue.

It was great to see it lift tonight and hope it stays that way for the rest of the year. Once Floss, Conca, Foley, King, Morris etc get into the side and get miles in the legs I dont think many teams will spread better so its a non issue for me. We were our own worse enemy tonight.

Why can we not follow instructions in the last  2 minutes to close out games 

And seriously, folks would know I don't pot umpires for the sake of it but I reckon they were intimidated by the crowd tonight - they got some very soft frees. reckon the intimidation is worth 3-4 goals

and can I add forget the last 2 minutes,  the 2nd qtr was the costly one. Again one shocking qtr cost us dearly

Hate to 'can' him on this occasion but Jack could have gone a little harder at Ballantyne in that crucial contest. He did however have a good game overall on fyfe. Why Grigg was loitering out back covering no-one is a different matter.

i think they were able to switch play at will because we didnt have our attack dog(kingy) in to harass and force mistakes on our forward line
I thought Nahas was poor when he came on ,didnt give us much of a lift at all.i would think his days are numbered
And not sure about jacko..he gives us so much grunt and competitive effort around the ground,but his disposal is so awful that it really costs us....Do we drop him because of this or do we keep him because he gives so much in other areas?????

The thing i find most painful about jacko is how slow he is when he takes possession in congestion. Often he seems to be tackled or dispossessed by the time he has decided what to with the ball. He is just incapable of shooting out a quick handball to a teammate when under pressure.

I am sick to absolute death of Jackson. I don't care how much so-called grunt and competitive effort he gives us. His poor decision-making, clumsiness, lack of awareness and consistent inability to hit a teammate by hand or foot, week in week out, make him a liability. Smart bloke (allegedly) but just a dumb, dumb footballer. His glaring errors last night included, falling into Mayne's back, and attempting to centre the ball after a mark at CHF only to kick to two Freo players, who rushed the ball away for a goal. And when Ballantyne kicked the winning goal, three guesses who it was it that shovelled the ball out to the open side of the goalsquare to allow the Freo players to run onto it en masse. If Dimma thinks that he's been our most effective player this year (as he stated coming into the Collingwood match, where Jacko put in another one of his insipid, ball-butchering performances) then he is seriously, seriously deluding himself. He would be the first player I'd offload at season's end. Should have been done years ago.

Wow, we lost that game on so many levels its not funny! I am never one to umpire bash but if our great game continues to be umpired by crowds I am no sue if I can continue to follow it.
