The word from a couple of journos is Richmond allowed for the correct amount of time which included the half time break which is within the rules. The match day officials thought the time needed to be used up during game time and penalised us for Edwards going back on.

also luckily swans kicked out on the full after that BS 50...and we ended up getting it back and kicking a goal not long after...so technically didn't cost us.

AFL to review Shane Edwards interchange infraction

RICHMOND is likely to be told the AFL’s interchange steward made a blunder when the league on Monday reviews the Shane Edwards interchange infraction.

In Friday night’s game at the SCG, Richmond was told Edwards was free to return from a 20-minute concussion assessment, only for the Tigers to be penalised when he did.

A shot at goal was taken away from Tyrone Vickery and Sydney’s Nick Smith was awarded a shot at goal, only to kick out of bounds on the full.

The AFL said on Sunday it was up to the interchange steward to time the 20 minutes for a concussion substitution.

Yet Richmond is adamant its interchange steward, Vickery’s father John, was told at least once Edwards could go back on.

Former Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell labelled the blunder “absolute garbage” on Sunday, saying the league couldn’t afford to make those mistakes.

Spokesman Patrick Keane said the AFL would review the incident in which Edwards jumped the gun by 1min 20sec.

“Perhaps the communication with Richmond was not good enough,’’ Keane said.

“When it was indicated he had passed a concussion test, it needed to be very clearly ­indicated he could go back on but still had a minute to wait.

“The issue we need to understand is how did Richmond get that message and why hadn’t the interchange steward stopped him by the time he got on to the ground.

“It is up to the interchange steward (to time it).

“He went back on early, but if the time hadn’t expired, Richmond needed to be clearly told that ... he shouldn’t have got out there.”

So while they're at it they can also give an answer on whether Goodes gave away a free kick by pulling Grimes over the goal line away from the ball when Swans scored a goal in the first quarter.
The Edwards decision took away our shot at goal but did not give them a goal (only due to a poor kick).

When the Swans goal was awarded without a Goodes infringement I thought it was going to be a certainty we would lose by 5 points.
Add the Edwards one and it could have been another 12 points (Vickery goal, Smith miss)

Suppose it's just a minor thing for the umpires to affect the result by a possible 18 points.

Absolute fools. We had all the momentum and had we of lost that game we should have been awarded 4 points as compo. Lucky we won..

What a stuffen debacle , the RFC needs to be compensated for this , has cost us percentage. Maybe a draft pick after the first round, something, anything

Simple answer to these infractions, review after the match and issue a fine if there has been an interchange error. If this costs any side a win, there would be hell to pay.

One day it will cost a team a game, ladder position or percentage, and influence finals or draft picks.

And isn't it funny that all these sorts of trivial matters always find a way of benefitting AFL pets like Sydney, and screw teams over like Richmond

AFL concedes error in Friday night infringement penalty

THE AFL has conceded a series of errors from an interchange official led to Richmond being incorrectly penalised for an interchange infringement in the third quarter against the Sydney Swans on Friday night.

"There was a miscommunication at bench level between Richmond and the interchange official," Evans said.

"[It was] a terrible outcome for the AFL and we put our hand up for that and we need to be better than that."

The infringement occurred when Tigers midfielder Shane Edwards returned to the ground after being assessed for concussion before the required 20 minutes had elapsed.

The Tigers allowed him to return however because they believed they had permission.

Their interchange steward had asked the AFL interchange official whether the player was allowed to come back on once cleared by the doctor and was told 'yes'.

However according to Evans the AFL official should have said 'yes, but you need to wait for the 20 minutes to expire'.

Evans said having made that first mistake the official then had chances to rectify the situation before the penalty was awarded.

"Not having done that, when they saw the player step up to go on to the ground they should have done everything within their power to make sure that he did not go on," Evans said.

With Edwards on the ground the penalty was awarded with the ball being taken from the Tigers' Tyrone Vickery, who was lining up for a goal, and given to Sydney Swans defender Nick Smith, who then was positioned to kick for goal at the other end of the ground.

The situation became farcical for a moment as players and umpires did not appear to know what to do in the situation, a point Evans conceded.

"Even from there, clunky and clumsy the way it was then played out between interchange officials and the umpire," Evans said.
