‘Pretty clear standout’: The ball magnet who won EVERYTHING as Giant draft coup looms

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
December 11th, 2025

It was the tough, intimidating footy initiation that set Chloe Bown up for the most ridiculously impressive draft campaign and likely top-three draft selection.

The consensus among sources spoken to by foxfooty.com.au was that Bown was the No.1 open pool prospect, with one source declaring Bown was a “pretty clear standout”.

Clubs view Bown (173cm) as a consistent, reliable on-baller with an incredible work ethic and ability to kick well on both feet. Her ability to break lines and set up scores for her team are also weapons in an already loaded arsenal.

Bown has drawn similar praise from her peers, several telling foxfooty.com.au that they’d select Bown with pick 1.

Bown said she modelled her game on Richmond superstar Monique Conti.

Richmond, which moved up to Pick 1 during the AFLW trade period, will consider taking Bown with the opening selection of next week’s draft.

If the Tigers overlook her – and that’s becoming an increasingly likely prospect – it’s hard to see her sliding past the GWS Giants (Picks 2 and 3) or, at the latest, Adelaide (Pick 4).

Tigers reveal moment they decided to trade for No.1 pick

Richmond will have the first pick in the AFLW draft after making a bold trade move.

By Sarah Black, AFL Media
Dec 11, 2025, 8:47 am

Richmond will base its draft hand around the need to boost its athletic profile after a disappointing slide down the ladder in 2025.

The Tigers underwent an external review after the conclusion of their season, which led to the departures of head of football Kate Sheahan and coach Ryan Ferguson.

List manager Trent Mosbey said there was a targeted approach to land pick one from Gold Coast in order to get access to the top three players in the draft, having originally held pick No.4.

"We worked on it for a month or so, working with Thomas (Waldron) at Gold Coast. He's been awesome and great to deal with, and obviously traded a lot of picks in, and that enabled him to get those deals done, and allowed us an opportunity to get pick one," Mosbey said.

"We saw it as a unique opportunity and the player we have there we rate really highly. We're really excited to bring them in and get it done next Monday.

"We really clearly feel there are three standout players in this draft, and we just really wanted access to them, which is why we did it. We were at (pick) three, before the AFL gave the Giants a compensation pick. So once that came in, we knew we really had to get to work to get up to (pick) one to make sure we were able to secure that talent."

The Tigers have been heavily linked to draft bolter Scarlett Johnson, with Chloe Bown and key forward Olivia Wolmarans the other likely options at the top of the draft board.

"[Johnson] is one of the players we are considering there. She's a really exciting athlete, but there's quite a few exciting talents in this pool as well," Mosbey said.

"[Needing athleticism] was evident throughout the year, that we're a step off in that regard, so we really needed to address that across the field. We think bringing [Georgia Stubs] in, Dana East and now the No.1 pick as well – plus what we can get later in the draft, which we're really excited about that period of the draft -  we think we can bounce back next year.

"One of the key components is getting more athletic and quicker around the ground, so we can challenge and compete with the better teams in the future."

Mosbey did not go into detail about the review and subsequent fall-out, instead paying tribute to his former colleagues.

"To Kate Sheahan and Ryan Ferguson, we're very thankful for their great service to our football club in setting us up for what we are right now, and I'm really thankful for what they've done. They were a massive part of us going up for pick one."

By Gemma Bastiani
Afl.com.au
Dec 11, 2025

RICHMOND

IN
Georgia Stubs (trade, North Melbourne), Dana East (trade, Fremantle)

OUT
Tessa Lavey (retired), Jodie Hicks (retired), Lulu Beatty (delisted), Lauren Brazzale (delisted), Charley Ryan (delisted), Grace Egan (trade, Adelaide), Katelyn Cox (delisted), Shelby Knoll (delisted)

Some much-needed change has taken place at Richmond. Off field, both head of women's footy Kate Sheahan and coach Ryan Ferguson have been moved on, long-term captain Katie Brennan has stepped down as captain, and senior players Tessa Lavey and Jodie Hicks have retired. Untried Roo Georgia Stubs has landed with the Tigers for very little, making her a free hit for the rebuilding club, and experienced Fremantle midfielder Dana East was the very last player to move before the trade deadline, but the remaining pieces for their 2026 list will have to come via Monday's draft.

Viewed as the ‘safe’ choice for this year’s No.1 pick, Richmond is a big fan of the U18 All-Australian Chloe Bown.

The Vic Metro co-captain is highly skilled on both sides of her body and knows how to win the footy on the inside and out.

Richmond AFLW List and Recruiting Manager, Trent Mosbey, has provided an update on the Tigers’ plans for Monday’s draft.

Holding picks one, 38, 56 and 63, Richmond will bolster its list with a strong influx of young talent on Monday night, with Mosbey excited by the players that the Club are set to acquire.

“We're really excited by this unique opportunity, and it's going to be a great thing for the footy club going forward,” Mosbey told Richmond Media.

“We rated the top three in this draft, that sort of set it apart. Two of them have been really outstanding players from under-16's onwards, so we've got three years of great data there.

“The other one's sort of really bobbed up this year and really improved their game, but also had a great bottom-aged year as well.

“We feel really adequate and very prepared that we've seen these players play for a long time, we've built connections with the players themselves and their families, so we're very confident that we know them as people and players, and look forward to calling one of their names out on Monday.”

Such is the depth of talent in the draft pool, the Tigers’ second selection is a valued one.

“We’ll probably utilise pick 38, we've got a batch of players we feel that'll get through to that point of the draft, and we're excited to add a player there that can really help us in the present and in the future,” Mosbey said.

However, Mosbey explained how the options for using pick 56 remain open.

“Pick 56 gives us some flexibility,” he said.

“The AFL have introduced a pre-season draft, which will come into (effect) before the season starts next year, so we might have some flexibility around passing that pick to go into there with pick three in that draft or sign a rookie or look at some other options post that.

“A lot of flexibility…we'll see what comes through at that point of the draft and make a decision a bit sooner to that pick.”

------------------

The draftees won’t be the only new faces at the Swinburne Centre, with the Tigers adding Dana East (Fremantle) and Georgia Stubs (North Melbourne) in the trade period.

“We've liked Dana for a long time now, and the opportunity came up to acquire her and add to our midfield mix,” Mosbey said.

“We were looking for a really competitive inside mid that has really clean hands and was really good with distributing out to outside runners, and also a really strong tackler, really competitive around the football, can work hard both ways and provide defensive running transition.

“We feel that Dana will complement our other midfielders in there with Ellie McKenzie and Mon Conti, and then also our younger brigade, Sierra Grieves, Emelia Yassir, Isabel Bacon, Charli Wicksteed, so we really wanted to get a player that could complement them.”

While she is yet to make her AFLW debut, Mosbey says Stubs is primed to make an impact when her opportunity arises.

“We liked Georgia in her draft year,” he said.

“Georgia is a running rebound defender and also has recently trained as an inside mid at North Melbourne, so going up against Jasmine Garner, Ash Riddell and those sort of players in there, we feel she's had a great development path already with North Melbourne over two years, and we feel that she's ready to go and impact at AFLW level.”

---------------------------

Another deal Richmond made was sending Grace Egan to Adelaide in exchange for the aforementioned 38th pick.

“The opportunity came up for Grace to go to Adelaide, a great program, a new coach over there as well, and new opportunities to play in their midfield mix,” Mosbey said.

“It worked out for Grace, and we're really excited for her and what she can do over there, on and off the field in Adelaide as a town and as a club.

“We felt that Grace provided a skill set that we needed to enhance and improve on to make our midfield mix a bit more well-rounded, and with a number of younger players coming through, we're really excited to give them more opportunity through the midfield, and we felt that was a part of that as well.

“We do wish Grace the best of luck and thank her for what she did for our footy club, and we'll look on and applaud her from afar.”

AFLW phantom draft: Shock calls, bids galore as top 25 picks predicted in MEGA late mail

Ben Waterworth
Fox Sports
December 14th, 2025

Welcome to the 2025 Fox Footy AFLW Phantom Draft!

Around 45 to 50 players are expected to be taken in the 2025 AFLW draft, which will begin at 7pm (AEDT) on Monday December 15 — live and exclusive on Fox Footy, via Foxtel (Channel 504) and Kayo Sports.

Foxfooty.com.au predicts how the first 25 picks of the AFLW draft will pan out, including nine rival-club bids, plus the inside word on which prospects your club could take.

PICK 1: RICHMOND – SCARLETT JOHNSON

Position: Winger/defender

Height: 175cm

Clubs: Northern Knights/Eltham

The Tigers trade up to Pick 1 for the young gun from Eltham, knowing both the Giants and Crows have strong interest. A versatile player with excellent running capacity, strong footy IQ and arguably the best aerial game in this year’s pool, Johnson put together an awesome 2025 campaign. Despite missing AFL Academy selection, Johnson made the Under 18 All-Australian team after averaging 19.5 disposals per game for Vic Metro. She also won the Knights’ best and fairest award and made the Coates Talent League team of the year. Johnson then produced three top-10 finishes at the national draft combine in the 20m sprint, agility test and running vertical jump.

In the mix:
There’s still speculation the Tigers aren’t completely set on Johnson at Pick 1. The other two contenders are tall forward Olivia Wolmarans — who recently met again with the Tigers — and midfielder Chloe Bown. Some clubs have Bown as the No. 1 prospect in this year’s class, while a couple of sources believe the Tigers will take Wolmarans. But Johnson has also met with Richmond in the past week …

PICK 2: GWS GIANTS – OLIVIA WOLMARANS

Position: Tall forward

Height: 181cm

Clubs: Subiaco/Mt Hawthorn Cardinals

An athletic and versatile goalkicker who was named at centre half-forward in this year’s Under 18 All-Australian team — 12 months after being named in the same line-up as a bottom-ager. Representing WA, Wolmarans averaged 12.5 disposals, 4.2 marks and 1.5 goals per game at the national championships, with her match-winning four-goal performance against the Allies the standout game. What makes Wolmarans such an exciting AFLW player is her attack on the ball and competitiveness, both in the air at ground level. Couple that with her strong marking ability and you’ve got a forward who’s going to be hard to contain at the top level.

PICK 6: ADELAIDE CROWS – CHLOE BOWN

Position: Midfielder

Height: 173cm

Clubs: Oakleigh Chargers/Kew Comets

What a result this would be for Adelaide. Bown literally won everything this year. She was crowned the best and fairest player of 2025 national championships, won Vic Metro’s MVP award and earned selection as the Under 18 All-Australian captain after steering her team to back-to-back title wins. Bown’s season was book-ended by a best on ground medal when representing the Australia Under 18 team against the All Stars in April and the Coates Talent League best and fairest award in September after averaging 29 disposals and six tackles per game. Clubs view Bown as a consistent, competitive and relentless on-baller with an incredible work ethic and ability to kick well on both feet. Her ability to break lines and set up scores for her team are also weapons in an already loaded arsenal.

Who will Tigers take with pick 1?

Richmond targeted Pick 1 during the trade period and struck a deal with the Suns to land the coveted first selection. The Tigers rate three players above all others in the pool, but there’s a growing belief they’ll pounce on Northern Knights product Scarlett Johnson — a versatile defender/wing who put together a strong campaign for the Knights and Vic Metro. Her stocks were only boosted during the national combine, where she produced three top-10 finishes in the 20m sprint, agility test and running vertical jump.

Oakleigh Chargers star Chloe Bown and Subiaco key forward Olivia Wolmarans are the other players in Richmond’s Pick 1 mix.

Bown won just about everything possible in her draft year, dominating for the Chargers, Metro and AFLW Academy. She’s a beast around the coalface, can kick on both sides of her body and loves to hit the scoreboard. A hard-worker with a strong footy IQ, Bown has plenty of upside at the top level.

Wolmarans is the best open pool key position player, blessed with pure athleticism and strong aerial ability. She’s fast, agile and has a booming kick.

First-round fun: Sarah Black's guide to the most unpredictable AFLW draft yet

AFLW expert Sarah Black has crunched the numbers ahead of the AFLW Draft on Monday night, and this is how she sees the first round playing out

By Sarah Black
afl.com.au
Dec 14, 2025

SCARLETT JOHNSON
Position: Utility
Height: 175cm
From: Victoria, Northern Knights/Eltham

A genuine draft bolter, Johnson's selling points are her athleticism and strong overhead marking. Can play across all three lines, including as a taller midfielder (for reference, she's the same height as Bri Davey) and is a noted leader. Strong Telstra AFLW Combine test results: third in the agility, ninth in the running vertical jump and 10th in the 20m sprint. U18 All-Australian at half-back, Coates Talent League Team of the Year on the wing, and Northern Knights best and fairest.

Where could she go?

Richmond appears most likely at pick one, having traded up to get access ahead of a host of clubs who were keen. Greater Western Sydney is waiting with picks two and three.

OLIVIA WOLMARANS
Position: Key forward
Height: 180cm
From: Western Australia, Subiaco/Mt Hawthorn

The top key forward in the pool. A classic old-school target, but with plenty of athleticism to add to the mix. Comes from a truly unique sporting background of heptathlon and rugby before focusing purely on footy. Booming kick, agile at ground level and Under-18 All-Australian for the past two years.

Where could she go?

Greater Western Sydney has its eyes firmly on the West Australian with pick No.2. Wouldn't look out of place at Punt Road, either.

CHLOE BOWN
Position: Midfielder
Height: 174cm
From: Victoria, Oakleigh Chargers/Kew

Bown does everything very, very well. A midfielder who can find the goals, she's a strong tackler, tenacious and a quiet accumulator. Finished fourth in the Combine's 2km time trial. Has a heaving bookshelf after an insane final season of junior footy – Under-18 All-Australian captain, Vic Metro MVP, overall MVP of the national championships, Coates Talent League B&F and Oakleigh's B&F.

Where could she go?

Was looking like a lock at pick No.1 until Richmond's change of heart. Unlikely to head to GWS, and could very well slide to Adelaide at pick No.4.
