Cornes surprised by Hardwick's outburst

A "SURPRISED" Kane Cornes has responded to Richmond coach Damien Hardwick's blunt post-match remarks, saying he was well within his rights to question the Tigers' complacency on Saturday night.

During the second quarter of the St Kilda-Richmond clash, Cornes tweeted: "If a top four side concedes 32 inside 50s in 45mins of play it means you've got ahead of yourself. No other explanation."

Cornes, who played in a premiership with Hardwick at Port Adelaide, stood by his assessment on Sunday.

"I think I've made some comments about Richmond in the last 18 months that he [Hardwick] hasn't been happy with," Cornes told Channel Nine.

"But rightly so, they've been poor for over 10 years (and) they haven't won a final since 2001.

"The fact they got ahead of themselves, I can't think of another explanation. Coming into that game, everyone thought the Tigers were going to win.

"Last week after the game (against Port Adelaide), Damien Hardwick said 'the best is yet to come' and then they serve that up."

On Saturday night, Hardwick did not mince his words when alerted to Cornes' tweet during his media conference.

"Seriously, I'd love to see Kane. I'd really love to see Kane," Hardwick said after his side's 67-point loss to the Saints.

"Don't get me wrong, that's his job – he's there to write poo comments."

Asked whether Cornes' observation deserved any "credibility", Hardwick instantly replied: "Please."

Cornes said the tone Hardwick adopted post-match was unexpected.

"I was surprised with the language he used," Cornes said.

"I haven't seen him or any other coach swear in a post-match press conference. But let's not take that comment away from what the story should be (and that is) … Richmond was so poor and they have got questions to ask. He should be asking those questions.

"They aren't the first side to get ahead of themselves. Lots of sides have done it before and they'll do it again. If you come in just a fraction off, thinking it's going to happen … then serve up 43 inside 50s in a half of footy, what does that say about your club?"

All Kane Cornes said was the Tigers got ahead of themselves, and Damien Hardwick bit back. It was an off-night for the Tigers and they deserved scrutiny, notwithstanding their terrific season to date. What else could be said of the Tigers on Saturday? Second to the ball, turnovers and outnumbered at contests. The Saints won the loose ball, their midfield smashed Richmond, the Saints were withering in defence, and there was a complete breakdown of the Tigers’ structure. Richmond’s leaders were undisciplined early, led by Trent Cotchin’s punch to the guts of Jack Lonie. Cornes didn’t say much, and the response suggests this is personal for Hardwick. “I would love to see Kane. I would love to see Kane, I’d really love to see Kane,”’ Hardwick said. Hopefully, it would have been only for a chat.

'We had it out': Kane and Dimma's robust chat

KANE Cornes has revealed he "had it out" with Richmond coach Damien Hardwick in a "robust" phone conversation between the pair on Monday.

The war of words erupted in Saturday night's St Kilda-Richmond clash when Cornes took to social media to question the Tigers' complacency, prompting Hardwick to return fire when alerted post-match.

Cornes said he reached out to Hardwick over the weekend and received a call back from the coach.

"Without divulging too much, it was a pretty robust conversation that we had this afternoon and I appreciated him calling me back," Cornes told Channel Nine on Monday night.

"Look, we had it out. I stand by my comments and he stood by his.

"But there's no question that Richmond got ahead of themselves (on Saturday night) and I said that to him on the phone."

Both Cornes and Hardwick played in the 2004 premiership with Port Adelaide.

Cornes acknowledged he had a "history" of criticising the Tigers, highlighting where strains in the relationship between he and Hardwick began to emerge.

"We have a premiership reunion every Thursday before the Grand Final and it did get back to me that he was upset with a few comments that I'd made over a long period of time," Cornes said.

"But he made that very clear that he separates me as the media performer and a former teammate, and there's no hard feelings.

"I've been critical of (Tigers captain) Trent Cotchin, I've been critical at Richmond, I was really critical of their finals performance going back a while (and) I was critical of the fact they dress up on Mad Monday and celebrate poor seasons."
