Injury Report: Pre-Season, December 2020
By Richmond Media - 1 day ago

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge provides Richmond Media with the latest injury report, brought to you by Victor Sports.

Noah Cumberland, knee

“Noah is going really well; he is now in the mid to late stages of the rehab program and running at high speed/close to sprinting. He is still doing some conditioning, but we are not trying to rush things because we have got some time on our side.

“He is progressing really well; at this stage we have not really stated a date for return to play or return to the main skills group. He has still got some things to tick off in his program in the next month or so and then we will have some information to when he will return to the group.”

Ivan Soldo, knee

“He is in a deep rehab program (with) strength training and balance training. He is a little while away from starting any kind of running given it happened so late in the season (Round 17 v Geelong).

“He is probably not looking at football until very late in the season at best, with these big guys we have got to take a very cautious approach. He is so diligent in what he does, he is in here now doing hours of rehab and special exercises.

“He is so dedicated, so we know one thing (and that is that) we are going to get a really good result with him because he will do everything he can to give himself the best chance to come back and play this year.”

Bigoa Nyuon, shoulder

“Shoulder is great, he is back to pretty much full training. His conditioning at the moment is outstanding, he has returned and done some things that we have seen in the last week which is really pleasing.

“He has taken a couple of steps forward in some areas and it’s actually really exciting to see him out here training with the boys and he is doing some good stuff at the moment, it’s really good.”

Kane Lambert, hip

“Had some hip surgery at the end of the season, only recently, and has returned to running already the last three to four weeks.

“He will probably resume with the main group in January ahead of schedule which is a great result.”

Rehab group in general

“It’s quite a small rehab group at the moment which is a great result considering how late we finished the season. Not many surgeries and not many guys needing rehabilitation.”

Introducing draftees to training

“We had Maurice Junior in today and Samson Ryan from Queensland. They came in today and did their medical screening with the doctor and the physio and then were able to come out on the track and do some skills training with the young guys.

“We are not doing a huge workload at the moment, but it was good for them to come in and do everything that was planned. We will progress and have a look at them over the next week and couple of months.”

Build up to the season for the full group

“Given we had a late finish to the year obviously with the Grand Final, and if you look at the last couple of year’s collectively we have finished later. It is really a balance of management and getting the work in before the season, it is a fine line with the game also going back to full length.

“I think for January we will be managing the guys back into the program over those couple of weeks and then into February we will ramp things up a little bit preparing for some match play towards the end of February into March for the Marsh Series.

“Overall we just have to find the right balance and we have got a little bit of a plan in place for that.”

Will be almost a write off season for Soldo next year. Might not see him at senior level until 2022.

Did Lynch have finger surgery? Reckon that hand injury affected his ball drop and goalkicking this year.

From the Australian:

Tigers’ high performance chief Peter Burge confirmed the squad was in good shape heading into the new season with only three players currently in the rehabilitation group.

Ruckman Ivan Soldo and youngster Noah Cumberland are both out with serious knee injuries, while Bachar Houli is in doubt for Round 1 with the calf problem he suffered in the Grand Final.

Gun midfielder Dion Prestia also tweaked his ankle in match simulation last week, but is expected to be back in full training next week.

It means Richmond is pleased with its fitness bill four months after taking out back-to-back premierships, in another big tick for its strength and conditioning department.

Houli, 32, pinged his calf in the opening five minutes of the Grand Final victory but bravely played out the game despite significant soreness.

That courage has come at a price over summer with the premiership veteran suffering a couple of hiccups which has put him under a cloud for the blockbuster season opener against Carlton on March 18.

Burge said it had been a frustrating preseason for Houli, while the rest of the squad was quite healthy.

“He did a fair job of it (calf injury) to be honest. In the warm up he reported a bit of an issue with it, and the first five minutes it wasn’t any good,” Burge said.

“He could barely walk on it the next day.

“But it has just been really difficult to get to each (new) stage (in the recovery) with it.

“He’s had a few hiccups along the way and we are battling a little bit to be honest, with it.

“It is very hard for us to put a time frame on it and I don’t want to rule him out for Round 1, but he has got some work to do before then.”

Prestia did some running away from the main group at training on Monday after tweaking an ankle, but it is only a minor issue, Burge said.

RICHMOND

The Tigers have had one of the smallest injury lists in recent years and that is set to continue into the early stages of 2021, with just a few players in the rehab group. Ivan Soldo and Noah Cumberland are both returning from ACL surgery in 2020, with the latter the most likely to make a return at some point during the mid-season. Veteran Bachar Houli (calf) is still recovering from an injury sustained in the Grand Final, but isn’t far away from progressing to full fitness.

Injury update: Who's in your club's medical room

Richmond's main concern heading into round one will be Dion Prestia, with the triple-premiership Tiger racing to be ready after his recent hamstring setback. Bachar Houli has all but been ruled out for the clash with Carlton after battling the calf tear he suffered in last year's Grand Final win over Geelong, while Kane Lambert didn't feature against Melbourne in last week's practice match as he overcomes off-season hip surgery. Daniel Rioli also missed it with a minor ankle concern emanating from the Tigers' intraclub the previous week, while Riley Collier-Dawkins was on the end of a heavy collision that day as well, so sat out last week but should be available this week. Ivan Soldo and Noah Cumberland are in their comebacks from their respective knee reconstructions last year, with Soldo tracking well to be available later in the season. – Callum Twomey

Richmond injury list

Name   Injury   Estimated Absence
Noah Cumberland   Knee   3-4 months
Dion Prestia   Hamstring   3-4 weeks
Ivan Soldo   Knee   Season

Midfield gun Dion Prestia is touch-and-go for round one after suffering a hamstring strain. Ruckman Ivan Soldo is likely to be absent for the entire 2021 season after hurting his ACL at the back end of last season, while youngster Noah Cumberland wont' be available until mid-year with his own knee problem.

PLAYER   INJURY   ESTIMATED RETURN
 Noah Cumberland    Knee    6-8 weeks
 Bachar Houli    Calf    1-2 weeks
 Tom Lynch    Toe    Available
 Dion Prestia    Hamstring    Available
 Ivan Soldo    Knee    4-5 months

Updated: Tuesday, March 9

Early prognosis
It is a healthy list at Punt Road, with Houli the only one unlikely to play in round one with his calf injury that has lingered since last year's Grand Final. Prestia and Lynch didn't play against Collingwood in last week's AAMI Community Series game with the club being extra cautious but both are expected to play against Carlton. Soldo is making good progress from his knee reconstruction and the club believes he will play later in the season. - Callum Twomey

----------------------------------------------------------------

Trent Cotchin, illness

“Trent will full train this week. He had a bout of gastro the day before the game unfortunately and we gave him up until lunchtime on the day of the game to see if he improved.

“Trent over the weekend resumed some training and on Sunday did a pretty lengthy conditioning session, so we actually got some work into him on Sunday and he will resume normal training this week and be available for selection on Sunday."

Bachar Houli, calf

“Bachar has had a really good couple of weeks, he has strung together some really high-intensity sessions of good duration as well.

“He is resuming training with the group this week, with the aim of going back into full training this weekend (and) next week (and then) being available for round three.

“At what level we are a bit unsure at this stage, but we would like to get two full weeks of football training into Bachar given the interruptions we have had.

“It is looking really good and we can’t wait to see Bachar out there shortly.”
