I don’t trust any injury report not published by RFC or AFL.

Injury Report: February 14, 2023

Richmond’s Physical Performance Manager Luke Meehan provides the latest pre-season injury update.

Jason Castagna, hamstring

"Unfortunately, Jason suffered a pretty decent medium-term hamstring injury. It was only two minutes to go in the (match simulation). He's commenced his rehab program already, and we're expecting him to be missing for the medium-term and hoping for him to be available around about Round 1."

Nathan Broad, hamstring

"Late last week, Nathan also suffered a more minor issue with his hamstring. We're hoping that he'll be available for the Melbourne practice game, but he should be okay for the start of the season."

Kaleb Smith, foot

"Kaleb's been in a boot now for three weeks. He has about one more week in the boot and after that we'll know a little bit more and see how he is progressing, he's going well though."

Josh Gibcus, hamstring

"Surgery went really well, it's about three-and-a-half weeks since the surgery. He's already progressed with his running and strength program, everything is going to plan at the moment, it's going really well."

Tom Lynch, plantar fasciitis

"Tom's had a really good block since Christmas. He's, just actually the other day, started some light drills with the team. He's got a lot of work to, we're hoping for him to be available at the start of the season."

Jack Graham, toe

"Jack's trending in a similar trajectory to Tom. He started with the group on Monday and we'll keep building him and have him available for the start of the season."

So I’m just gonna assume all those other guys that have been doing running drills only and/or missing match sim are just being managed rather than nursing any specific injury.

I don’t like that last sentence on Lynchys report at all. Wish the guy could just play a full season for once - would easily kick 80+ goals.

Medical room

Liam Baker will be pushing for round one, depending on his recovery from having his appendix removed, but Jason Castagna (hamstring) is less likely. Tom Lynch (foot) is gradually ramping up his training and is on track to face Carlton, but it is unclear to what level he'll participate in pre-season matches, with Jack Graham (toe) following a similar timeline. The Tigers have earmarked the Melbourne practice match for Nathan Broad (hamstring). Josh Gibcus is recovering from a long-term hamstring injury and is back running, while draftee Kaleb Smith (foot) has been in a moonboot for a month.

Tom Lynch, plantar fasciitis

Jacob Bauer, ankle

"Jacob has a very minor syndesmosis. He is out of the moon boot and will resume running later this week."

Tyler Sonsie, hip

"Tyler has a small hip flexor injury. He will be unavailable this week and likely available for the Melbourne game."

Jason Castagna, hamstring

"Jason has begun his rehab run progressions but will be unavailable for both practice games."

Josh Gibcus, hamstring

"Josh is four weeks into his rehab program and running well."

Nathan Broad, hamstring

"Nathan's rehab is progressing well. We expect him to play some game time against Melbourne."

That’s a better summary.

Reads like Lynch is more likely than not for round 1 while Graham is touch and go and Castagna, Gibcus, Smith and Colina will defs be out. Otherwise all the rest will be available baring any other set backs.

From The Age:

The Tigers are likely to finally have full-forward Tom Lynch and midfielder Shae Bolton back to lead a group of senior players returning for the second practice match.

Lynch has been battling a plantar fascia problem over the summer, with the Tigers patiently building him towards fitness for round one.

He will be assessed during the week but is a strong chance to play at least some minutes in the second practice match this week, against Melbourne at Casey Fields on Saturday afternoon.

Bolton missed the first practice match against North Melbourne last week while he attended a funeral, but he is likely to return to the club this week and play against the Demons.

Jack Graham’s turf toe injury, which he managed last year then had treatment for at the end of the season, is still causing him problems. He is a chance albeit possibly unlikely for round one.

Liam Baker had his appendix out, forcing him to miss the first practice match. He could be a chance to play this week but will certainly be fit for round one.

The management of Lynch, however is the most critical. While Richmond will have a new-look midfield with the arrival of Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper, they have a very familiar-looking forward set-up with veterans Lynch and Jack Riewoldt still the key targets.

The former All-Australian Lynch, who has turned 30, won the Jack Dyer Medal last year and is probably the Tigers’ most critical structural player.

TIGERS HOPEFUL TRIO WILL FACE DEES

Richmond is hoping to give game time to three key players for its upcoming practice match against Melbourne.

Tom Lynch (plantar fasciitis), Nathan Broad (hamstring) and Tyler Sonsie (hip) all missed out on facing the kangaroos in match simulation, but the Tigers are looking to hand the trio minutes against the Dees on Saturday.

Liam Baker (appendicitis) is unlikely to play as the club continues to monitor his progress, while Jack Graham (toe) has been working towards being available for Round 1.

Young gun defender Josh Gibcus is four weeks into his rehab program after undergoing surgery on his hamstring – an injury that has ruled him out of the early rounds of the season.
