Glad to hear your daughter is safe Moi. Yep they said tonight the Belgrave fire was deliberately lit  >:(.

How about the mum with 8 kids and one of the way being an arsonist and would light fires in the bush in front of her kids  :help. Even her own kids gave evidence against her in court. All she got was 2 years  ???.

She deserved to get more than she did. 20 year would have been more fitting.

THE man accused of lighting a bushfire that killed 11 people has made an insurance claim for fire damage.

Brendan James Sokaluk, 39, lodged the claim with the RACV a day after fires ravaged Victoria.

His website lists candles and thunderstorms as turn-ons.

They need a arson offenders list with the police like they do with sex offenders so these psychos can't join the CFA or live as 'sleepers' within rural communities. Just plain sick and scarey especially if the penalty is just 2 years  :banghead :help.

I thought under the new laws bought in, in 1998 that the penalty for arson causing death is now 25years

The problem with that law is has to be 'arson causing death' not just plain arson. If no one dies (which is just plain lucky when it comes to bushfires) then the sentences are light because it's hard in court to prove the intent of the arsonist was to kill people. It should be if someone commits arson then it's classed at least as attempted murder.  The laws are too soft on arson.

Quote
According to the the Australian Institute of Criminology, half of all vegetation fires -- between 20,000 to 30,000 fires each year -- are deliberately lit.

Between 2001 and 2006, 276 people were sentenced in Victoria for all forms of arson and only a third went to jail.

The average sentence was between two and three years.

Hold on to your hats as the wind is picking up and that is the worse news for the fires and the firefighters.
We have got dust storms here again and these winds are heading that way.
I hope it dies out before reaching there.

My daughter got caught up in them again this arvo  >:(
The school where she teaches got water bombed and they were held up there for a while, copping embers and pretty scary
But I guess it was the best place to be at a school on the mountain because they had protection from cops and the fire crews.
There's some creep up there doing these and I'm so glad there was hardly a wind up there this arvo because it could have been a different story
Just got home after being up there trying to find her.
They evacuated to the Knox Netball Centre and I found her there  :thumbsup

For memory you live close to it as well, 2JD.  Take care of yourself as well.  And everyone else.  There's a few of us up that way from this site, I think, so look after yourselves.
