Riewoldt isn't built to be a team's No.1 big power key forward. His body type isn't a bash and crash packs one like his cousin Nick. He's more a Stevie Johnson type who needs a Mooney and Hawkins say next to him up forward so he can use his smarts against a 2nd/3rd defender.
sorry MT one word which was meant to be (key) forward which is why he was drafted to the club
instead l used (big)
Rewoldt needs some much needed development in body strength & how to use it. He lacks blocking power to give other forwards a clear go at the ball.
His attack on the ball is not the question as every game you will see him do the 1% but l'm talking about lower body strength & how easy he is thrown off when tackling which in todays game defending the forward zone is just as important.
Richmond might have quick players but l will give a example on 2 players , Cousins when is grabbed has so much strength in his lower body his not easy to pull to the ground & allows him time to turn the attacking player around & offload a split second handball, Shane Tuck, & Trent Cotchin are strong in the lower body this is why they are dominate players but used for differnet reasons
Tuck, Johnson, Jackson used as the blockers while tagged players such as Cousins, Cotchin, now Coughlan have the lower body strength to excell & if caught by the tagger can use that to turn the player & keep the ball moving.
Now for the forwards, Richo is one of the most powerful forwards in the league that is mis-used by his team-mates. Has great hands & great speed to lead but is rarely honored by the time wasters that teams get more players back on him. 1 on 1 you got little chance of outmarking the bigman or beating him or pushing him aside in the contest because of his lower body strength.
Nathan Brown used to be such a player but had his confidence shot & being layed up lost his lower body strength which has robbed the AFL spectators of what he could have really been. His game yesterday is showing his confindence is returning & also spells out why he is suffering groin problems & struggles to kick goals his once did from outside 50. Over the last few seasons his struggled on each leg to kick 40 most times because of that main injury & the recurring problems he had which Chris Newman never had, but the St-Kilda player ??? & the Swans player l think Lawson did have so Nathan Brown is very lucky to be still playing at all at league level
Rewoldt l have already mentioned & is the reason he got dropped because his not kicking goals & not able to block players out of contests. Being pulled down so easy in that tackle against the Swans was his calling card to work harder cause he collapsed like a baby holding a carrot. That cost us the game & didnot go down well at all. Morton got axed because his doing the same action every week kicking around his body at goal instead of taking a better option & hitting up better options. The 1st thing that comes into his head is to play-on & put himself under preasure is wearing thin & dont be surprised if his axed again next week against Essendon.
MT in a few years will will be talking about Rewoldt but players like Geelongs Johnson are guns because they put the extra work in otherwise he would not be at Geelong
He had no choice as Bomber was about to cut his silly head off. His workrate is excellent & they has better development & conditioning staff & 1 of our Tigerland sons that puts alot in
& as l said above Forwards defending the forward 50 well here is a poor example of coaching yesterday
Richmond players zone off trying to stop the ball being moved from the Port defence
so what did Port do, from the kick-in they went straight down the corridor & kicked a goal like they were the only players on the ground
& a wet ground at that which makes it all the more disappointing. That would be the very 1st video the players would be watching this week l would presume.
They forgot about protecting footballs most gracious peice of land. l just about dropped off my seat & seen it as costing us the game
anyway thats enough l enjoyed the game & popelord l hope now you have a better idea if you think l dont know poo about development & conditioning then maybe you should skip my posts
l simply been pointing out where the club has been going wrong all these years & there are no more excuses left at Tigerland & the supporters know it.
people can go down & watch training from outside all they want but there is alot more going on behind closed doors that is where most of player development goes on
also alot of players take it upon themselves to do thier own advance training which the media takes up most of our players spare time with radio & TV & sponsor commitments
is why other clubs are ahead of us in most areas
