TOURNAMENT favourites South Australia handed Northern Territory a belting in perfect conditions in Darwin, winning their NAB AFL Under-18 contest at TIO stadium on Saturday evening by 91 points.

The Croweaters had all but put the game out of reach by quarter time, kicking eight goals to two, and increased their margin at every change.

They were led by two powerful marking targets - Port Adelaide Magpies’ Jamie Solly and Glenelg’s Darcy Armfield, who kicked six and five goals respectively. Jared Polec was also extremely impressive for the winners, as was promising key position player Sam Day.

NT battled hard all evening with David Kruse, Jack McEwin and Shannon Rioli showing plenty in front of their home supporters.

South Australia’s next game shapes as a beauty when they host the powerful Vic Metro team at Norwood Oval in Adelaide on June 12. Meanwhile the Territory boys will need to pack the thermals for a trip to Launceston and a match-up against Tasmania on June 19.

Metro comfortably won every quarter and kept Tasmania scoreless in the final term to run out 96-point winners in freezing conditions in Hobart.

In the first of four matches to be played in the championships this weekend,  Metro bolted out of the blocks and shared the goals throughout the game, with 192cm Darcy Barden from the Northern Knights kicking five and Viv Michie from the Oakleigh Chargers three.

For Tasmania, Josh Green followed up his stellar game in Round 1 to again be the best player in green, collecting 31 touches.

Leading ball-winners for Metro included Ben Jacobs, who had 36 disposals across half-back and in the middle, while Tom Schneider was also prolific on the ball.

At 1-1, Metro now turns its attention to the game against South Australia on June 12 at Norwood Oval, while Tasmania face Northern Territory at Aurora Stadium on June 19.

U18 eye-catchers: round two
By Jason McCartney
Wed 09 June, 2010

Mitch Wallis (Vic Metro)
Inside midfielder who racked up 31 possessions and kicked two goals against Tassie. His clearance work was a highlight. Son of Steve Wallis, so a potential father-sign signing for the Bulldogs.

Daniel Gorringe (SA)
The spring-heeled 198cm ruckman completely dominated the hit-outs against NT, continually giving his midfield first use of the footy.

Luke Parker (Vic Country)
Tough inside midfielder with impressive work-rate. Gathered 25 possessions, many of them contested, in the win over NSW/ACT. Used the ball well by hand.

Ben Reid (NSW/ACT)
Brother of Western Bulldogs’ Sam. The 181cm small forward kicked three goals and laid six tackles against Vic Country. Speed, agility and decision making all very good.

Jack Darling (WA)
Strong-bodied key forward. Had 20 possessions, nine inside 50s and took nine marks in WA’s win over Queensland. Always provides a ferocious contest.

Joel Wilkinson (Queensland)
A shining light on a bleak day for his side. Collected 27 disposals, including a game-high 12 hardball gets. Also laid six tackles and showed fantastic leg speed.

Sam Darley (Tasmania)
The 17-year-old 186cm midfielder from North Hobart has made a great start to the championships, averaging 27 disposals at 72 per cent efficiency. Will definitely have caught the eye of GWS recruiters.

Shaun Edwards (NT)
Signed by GWS this week. An athletic utility averaging 15 disposals and four tackles so far in the championships, mostly from across half-back. Superb ball use and decision making has been a feature.

Changing of the guard
By Kevin Sheehan
Wed 09 June, 2010

THERE has been a changing of the guard NAB AFL U18 Championships so far, as after two rounds South Australia and Vic Country are both unbeaten.

This is particularly significant for the South Aussies as they are now a strong chance to win their first title.

This might just be the best group South Australia has ever had, and a number of their players have produced impressive performances in their opening couple of games.

Jared Polec showed his immense talent in week one, while ruckman Daniel Gorringe was outstanding last weekend, as were Sam Day, Sam Gray and Jamie Solly, who has booted 11 goals in two matches.

Vic Country last won the championships in 2003, but it has been very impressive to this point in scoring wins over Vic Metro and NSW/ACT.

So it seems that Vic Metro and Western Australia, who have won eight of the last 10 division one titles, might be competing for third and fourth positions this time around.

It is important to highlight that the championships are not only a path for players towards the draft. The competition is very much about the dream of winning a national title with your mates.

This weekend, division one teams will continue to work on their dreams as round three begins.

South Australia plays host to Vic Metro at Norwood on Saturday in what should be a great contest. The SA boys are very keen to win this one, although Metro is going in with plenty of confidence after its good win over Tasmania last weekend.

Vic Country will clash with WA at Subiaco on Sunday. The country boys are used to doing plenty of travel, so they should have no trouble handling the trip to Perth. Watch for Vic Country key forward Lucas Cook, a member of our AIS Academy, to continue his fine form.

Division one
Team           Won Lost For Against  %    Points
South Australia    2   0    274  113   242.48    8
Vic Country          2   0    210  102   205.88    8
Vic Metro             1   1    200  146   136.99    4
Western Australia 1   1    212  161   131.68    4

Division two

Vic Metro surprises SA in U18 championships
By Tim Roman
Sat 12 June, 2010

Vic Metro             4.3     8.6     13.7     15.10 (100)
South Australia     2.6     4.9     6.12     10.17 (77)

Goals
Vic Metro: Patrick Karnezis 3, Aaron Young 3, Andrew Gaff 2, Darcy Barden 2, Kieran Harper, Dylan Conway, Mitch Wallis, Josh Caddy, Viv Michie

SA: Zak Fitzgerald 4, Brodie Smith, Sam Gray, Jared Polec, Scott Lycett, Daniel Gorringe, Sam Day

Best
Vic Metro: Ben Jacobs, Darcy Barden, Mitch Wallis, Matthew Watson, Cameron Guthrie, Andrew Gaff

SA: Zak Fitzgerald, Brodie Smith, Luke Davis, Matthew Snook, Joshua Waldhuter, Chad Wingard

--------------------------------------------------------------

A DOMINANT 47-possession game from Ben Jacobs has helped Vic Metro to an upset win over South Australia in their NAB AFL Under-18s game at Norwood Oval.

Jacobs was outstanding, continually rebounding the Metro team out of defence with clean possessions and savvy reading of the play.

Metro lead all day, pushing the lead out to six goals at three-quarter time before South Australia drew the margin back to 23 points by the end.

A dominant midfield performance helped set up the win with Mitch Wallis, Andrew Gaff and Josh Caddy all prominent, but the Croweaters’  inaccuracy in front of goal prevented them from making any real challenge.

Zak Fitzgerald finished with four goals for South Australia to be their only multiple goalkicker. The Vics shared the goals more evenly, with Patrick Karnezis and Aaron Young  each slotting three.

These two teams now get a week off before the big round four games to be played at Visy Park in Melbourne.  There the Metro boys will take on Northern Territory while South Australia will be looking to make amends against Tasmania.

Country sneak home over WA

Sun 13 June, 2010

Vic Country 2.0   6.3   8.6   10.11 (71)
WA            5.3   7.5   7.7    9.11 (65)

GOALS
Vic Country: Devon Smith 3, Sam Myors 3, Jayden Pitt 1, Billie Smedts 1, Luke Parker 1, Tom Lynch 1
WA: Shane Kersten 3, Max Duffy 2, Steven Coniglio 2, Harley Bennell 1, Jack Darling 1

BEST
Vic Country: Shaun Atley, Adam Treloar, Luke Parker, Lucas Cook, Marcus Darmody, Mitchell Hallahan
WA: Angus Litherland, Justin Monaco, Reece Conca, Harley Bennell, Steven Coniglio, Blayne Wilson

--------------------------------------------------

VIC COUNTRY remains undefeated at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, holding on in a tight last quarter to record a six-point win over WA.

WA burst out to a 21-point lead at quarter time but fell away to lose 10.11 (71) to 9.11 (65) at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

The home side had more inside-50s (56-42) and dominated possession early, but didn’t take their opportunities.

There were some outstanding individual performances from both sides, with Harley Bennell (26 possessions and 10 inside-50s) a standout for WA while Vic Country’s Adam Treloar (22 possessions and seven inside 50s) dominated on the opposing wing.

In a tough game of football, Luke Parker  (27 possessions and a goal) and Shaun Atley (24 possessions and nine hardball gets) were important for Vic Country in contested situations.

Both are eligible for this year’s NAB AFL Draft, while key forward Lucas Cook will also be watched closely by AFL scouts after pushing up the ground and impressing at times behind the ball.

For WA, defender Blayne Wilson continued to build his reputation with an outstanding game across half-back. The 2009 All-Australian read the ball supremely and finished with 24 possessions and nine marks.

Draft-eligible midfielder Reece Conca won 23 possessions and was good overhead for WA, while Scott Hancock built on his impressive opening game, displaying composure with his 18 touches.

SATURDAY'S Division Two games in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships resulted in easy wins for NSW/ACT and Tasmania.

The NSW/ACT Rams comfortably outpointed Queensland in Brisbane to record a 74-point win with Josh Bruce leading the forward line with four goals and numerous contested marks.

Anthony Miles again shone for NSW/ACT with a dominant display in the midfield and the Greater Western Sydney signing looks to be one of the players of these championships.

Liam Ruttege battled hard for Queensland and finished with three goals while Sam Michael was also impressive for the home team.

In Launceston, Tasmania eventually accounted for Northern Territory although they were slow out of the blocks, the Territorians kicking the first four goals of the game.

However the Tasmanians, led by gun midfielders Josh Green and Sam Darley, fought back to lead by two goals at half time before running out comfortable 44-point winners.

Ruckman Andrew Phillips was best for the home team while Shaun Edwards worked hard for NT gathering 30 possessions across half-back and kicking two goals.

All the under 18 teams now head to Melbourne for the final two rounds of the championships with Vic Metro playing Northern Territory on Friday June 25 at Visy Park before a triple-header at the same venue the next day completes round four.

Shifter's U18 wrap: round three
By Kevin Sheehan
Tue 22 June, 2010

THE NAB AFL Under-18 Championships are reaching crunch-time with each team having two games to play.

At this point, Victoria Country is hot favourite to claim its first division one title since 2003.

The country boys remain undefeated following their six-point victory over Western Australia at Subiaco Oval in round three.

Midfielders Shaun Atley, Adam Treloar and Luke Parker were outstanding for Vic Country in what was a great effort away from home.

It’s tough at Subi for any side travelling - whether it be an AFL team at senior level or an under-18 team.

Yet again, Western Australia’s standout player was Harley Bennell, who has been among the best performers in this season’s championships.

South Australia is still expected to challenge Vic Country for the title, although SA was beaten in round three by a very polished Vic Metro team.

In division two, NSW/ACT remains the side to beat after scoring another impressive win, this time over Queensland.

Anthony Miles, who signed recently with expansion club GWS, continued his great form with another prolific ball-winning effort in the middle.

Tasmania was too good for the Northern Territory when the teams met at Aurora Stadium, with Charlie Riewoldt - brother of Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt - kicking four goals.

It was great to see Melbourne star Brad Green down in Launceston doing some coaching with the Tasmanian team. Brad was a star for Tasmania in the 1999 championships, winning the HC Harrison Medal for the best player in division two.

Round four begins on Friday, June 25, and features cross-over games between the two divisions.

Vic Metro kicks things off at Visy Park on the Friday when they take on the Northern Territory.

Metro need a win to stay in contention for the division one title, so while the lads from the NT will give their all, expect the city boys to be a bit too strong.

There have been upsets in these cross-over games before and NSW/ACT certainly rate their chances of toppling Western Australia on Saturday, when their clash is one of three games to be played at Visy Park.

Vic Country should keep its unbeaten record intact when it takes on Queensland, while in the last game of round four South Australia and Tasmania will do battle in what shapes as an entertaining contest.

The final day of the championships will take place at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, June 30, with all eight teams in action.

If results go as expected, we will see a battle for the division one title between Vic Country and South Australia in the final match of the afternoon.

Given it will be the school holidays, I urge everyone with an interest in the future of the game to get down to Etihad Stadium to see these young-guns in action.

Entry is free, so there’s no excuse!

According to BF..

The Wednesday Championship games have just been removed from Etihad Stadiumfor Wednesday.

It’s extremely disappointing for all a reasonable solution had to be found and this is it…

· Div 2 matches will have to be played at Visy Park on Tuesday 29 June – at 12.30pm (Qld v NT) and 2.30pm (Tas v NSW/ACT) - (4 x 20 minute quarters). For this game, to assist workload we would be comfortable for teams to play up to 25 provided both teams have equal numbers.

· Div 1 matches will be played at Skilled Stadium, Geelong on Wed 30 June – 12.30pm (Vic M v WA) and 2.30pm (Vic C v SA) - (4 x 20 minute quarters)

· There will be no AFLPA Parents information session, as schedule for 8.15am at Etihad on Wed.

Therefore, in fairness to the Div 2 teams who now have a day’s less break, we will reduce all Rd 4 matches to 4 x 20 minute quarters at Visy Park .
