Indigenous showpiece proposed for redevelopen Punt Road Oval

for richmondfc.com.au

The Richmond Football Club today announced the planned creation of the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute, a centre to provide inspiration and employment pathways for young Indigenous people in our local community and beyond.

This is a key element of the next phase in the redevelopment of Punt Road Oval, which has been Richmond’s home since 1885.

The Club also further outlined plans to build much-needed new football facilities at Punt Road, along with a broad range of community benefits, including community sports facilities, meeting rooms, change rooms and offices for the Tigers in Community Foundation.

“Our vision is that in 2008, the centenary of the Club’s involvement in the AFL, Punt Road Oval will not only be upgraded to an elite sporting venue, but once again will become a centre for community life for the residents of the inner region of Melbourne.

“We are thrilled with and welcome the Australian Government’s $2m contribution to this major redevelopment of Punt Road Oval. It will certainly help us deliver significant community benefits from the redevelopment”, said Richmond’s CEO Steven Wright.

“Beyond our initial plans for the redevelopment, we are very excited to also announce today our proposal of transforming Punt Road Oval into an Indigenous showpiece, housing the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute.

“The Club is heartened by the fact that the Coalition is considering a further contribution of up to $5 million towards the establishment of the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute.

“The issues experienced within Australia’s Indigenous communities are well known to the Richmond Football Club and we have first-hand knowledge of the life-changing impact sport, and in particular, Australian Football, can have on young Indigenous people.

“The AFL plays a powerful role in inspiring healthy lifestyles among young Indigenous men, and provides a real career opportunity for them. Our commitment to the Indigenous community is also highlighted by our alignment with the Alice Springs and Tennant Creek communities as part of the AFL Club Fostership programme.

“Today’s announcement of the proposed Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute enables Richmond to further engage the AFL, Government and Victorian Indigenous Communities on how the Institute will identify and develop the talents of young Indigenous people from Victoria and beyond – both in football and more general life and leadership skills.

Richmond’s coaching staff and playing group are fully supportive of this initiative and will be actively involved with the program.

The club timed this well  :thumbsup. Received State Government funding before the State election and now Federal Government funding before the Federal election.

Including the council's money and the JDF it must be over $10 million all up towards the redevelopment. How good is that! Well done to all at the RFC  :clapping.

Tigers to build Indigenous institute

RICHMOND will redevelop its Punt Road training base and establish an Indigenous training institute after the club received $2 million from the Federal Government.

While locals will prosper from the planned establishment of a community sports building, the Tigers are set to pull down their existing change rooms and upgrade facilities that will see them on par with the best-equipped clubs in the competition.

“When complete and all funding has been finalised, we will proudly boast the most advanced football and community facilities in the AFL,” Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said.

Current Tigers Joel Bowden, Matthew Richardson, Chris Newman, Andrew Raines, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Carl Peterson were on hand for the announcement, along with coach Terry Wallace and several senior club officials.

Richmond chief executive Steven Wright said the Tigers’ board started redevelopment talks in 2005 after realising the club’s Punt Road headquarters had “fallen into disrepair”.

“Punt Road Oval will once again become a centre for community life for the inner-city residents of Melbourne and an elite sporting venue,” Wright said.

Plans were also released for the new Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute.

Wright said the Tigers hoped the new initiative would “transform Punt Road Oval into an Indigenous showpiece”.

A joint initiative of the Richmond Football Club and the Tigers in Community Foundation, the new institute would be designed to provide inspiration and employment opportunities to young Indigenous Australians.

Wright said the club was aware of the life-changing impact that sport and, in particular, Australian football, could have on young Indigenous Australians.

“One of our young stars, Richard Tambling … has spoken several times about the importance of AFL football in his life as he grew up,” Wright said.

Wright said it was anticipated the first intake of young people to the Institute would be in 2009, after the completion of redevelopment works at the Tigers’ home base.

“As part of the Australian Indigenous Football and Training Institute, training camps will be held throughout the year at Punt Road, to not only teach football skills, but also life skills to many groups of young Indigenous people

Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator George Brandis, was on hand to announce the Government’s financial pledge and said the Tigers could also qualify for an extra $5 million in funding – towards the new Indigenous institute – further down the track.

Demolition is expected to begin before Christmas, with work to be finished sometime in 2008 – the year in which the Tigers will celebrate 100 years’ involvement in the VFL/AFL competition.

Hopefully we can use this institute to spot some talented footballers like these Cape York kids who will turn 16 in 2009 as well as slowly build up a Tigers' supporter base in Northern Australia as Sheeds did at Essendon.

Steven Wright says the total budget for the Punt Rd Oval redevelopment is now $18 million  :o. A large amount of the funds are already locked in so the Club hopes they won't need to take out a loan. The blueprint for the Punt Rd Oval redevelopment sees us having the most elite training facilities in the AFL.

I was told this last week at training but haven't seen any mention of it anywhere else. Apparently, as part of the redevelopment, Punt Rd Oval itself will be extended slightly so it'll have the same dimensions as Telstra Dome. So we'll end up having two training grounds which are exactly the same size as the grounds we mainly play on - MCG (Craigieburn) and the Dome (Punt Rd).

Punting on the kids at Tigerland
Jackie Epstein | March 09, 2008

RICHMOND will lobby the Federal Government for funding after unveiling plans for a ground-breaking indigenous community centre at Punt Road Oval.

The club, along with its indigenous role model Richard Tambling, heads to Canberra on Tuesday in a bid to raise the extra $5 million needed to build the centre.

The project will provide leadership training, health, sport and lifestyle education programs for adolescents.

Tigers chief executive Steven Wright said the aim was to reinstate Punt Road as a hub of community activity.

"It's important to have the best football facilities absolutely, and we are concerned about the ill state of our ground. But a football club should be more than just a football facility," Wright said.

"We felt we should give back to the community like they've given to us over 100 years.

"We want to create basically a leadership and development training program for indigenous youth at Punt Road.

"What that would mean is 13 and 15-year-old kids -- boys and girls -- would come to Punt Road for a three-day camp. And based on advice from the Government and Richard's experience, we know what are big issues for indigenous people."

Richmond has already been given grants totalling $5.5 million by the State and Federal governments, City of Melbourne and the AFL.

With the first soil due to be turned by May, the matter has become a priority. Talks will be held with ministers including Jenny Macklin, Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs; Kate Ellis, Minister for Sport; and Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson.

The club has tailored its proposal to reflect comments made by the government after its historic apology for the stolen generation.

"This program outline is not only about personal development that a lot of indigenous kids need, but it also gives them the leeway to go to school if they know they're getting a good reward at the end with three days at an AFL club," Tambling said.

"When they get to the club they'll be learning about lifestyle and coming out of their shell.

"Most kids I know, including myself, wouldn't have said boo when they first came to Melbourne. The support and help I received around the football club has helped me stand up in front of people and given me some direction.

"Hopefully they can take that back to their communities.

"They don't see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. They do what their parents have done. Whereas if you give them a chance like this, with life skills, it gives them something to look forward to."

The proposal includes a community gym, lecture theatre, catering facilities and oval re-alignment.

Good to hear the redevelopment is soon about to start. Sounds like what I was told  about making the oval the same dimensions as the Dome maybe true is we are re-aligning it.

Where's the temporary "social club" meant to be now again?

Victorian AFL clubs to get government handouts today (The Age)

Victorian AFL clubs to get government handouts
Jake Niall | March 17, 2008 | The Age

THE majority of Victorian AFL clubs are set to receive millions in additional funding from the State Government, with an announcement expected today.

Sources last night confirmed that the State Government was to announce that the bulk of Victorian clubs would receive grants for various projects, with an emphasis on community involvement and partnerships.

Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, James Merlino, is expected to make the announcement at Punt Road Oval today, alongside AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, with Richmond and Hawthorn also among the clubs to receive substantial additional funding.

Richmond, too, has a redevelopment plan that involves money from government and local government sources; it has been pledged $2 million from the State Government, another $2 million from the local council and confirmed a $2-million Federal Government grant three weeks ago.

Government funding, especially at state level, has become increasingly crucial to Victorian clubs with nearly all of them reliant on it for training and ground facilities.
