GWS stands for Greater Western Sydney
-
That's a shocker! :-X
People in Western Sydney will turn up to do their shopping by mistake lol.
-
I don't know which one is funnir GC 17 or GWS.Grog wine and soft drink. :rollin
-
That is a really poo logo.
A white elephant would top it off, right in that red semi circle would be good.
Tucker I would turn GWS into Grog, Wine and Spirits
-
Hmmm. If they are the colours - Red, White and Blue the AFL is a farce.
Gold Coast shouldn't have been allowed to go red blue yellow and white given Lions are maroon, blue and yellow and if WS go red white and blue I think a few clubs can be dissapointed.
Plenty of colours still available. Green & White, Royal Blue with White trim, Sky Blue (NSW colour) etc etc
-

Yep Jake you would've thought the sky blue would be the obvious choice. Similar to Sturt's guernsey in the SANFL. Unless the AFL are hinting to the Bulldogs to relocate and merge ???.
-
They should become the Sharks :thumbsup
-
They should become the Sharks :thumbsup
They wouldn't be allowed to and they wouldn't want the same moniker as an NRL side in any case. Cronulla are the Sharks in Sydney. No sharks or sea creatures in the Western suburbs of Sydney either ;). Maybe they should nickname themselves the Elephants. Especially white ones.
-
GWS = great waste of space. Should be GWE great white elephant but who's splitting hairs?
-
GWS will play in the TAC Cup next year .....

Exactly the same Colours as the Bulldogs. ::)
That Logo is embarrassing. :-[ Makes me ashamed to live in Western Sydney.
Just to correct you MT, There are Sharks In Western Sydney but most of them can be found in the local Car Dealerships! ;)

AD and AA are pumping $200 million into GWS :-X. Maybe they could change their name to the dodgy brothers if all this money vanishes into thin air.

LOL MT, maybe they could be called the "GWS Thief's" and their team song could be from Oliver "You've got to pick a pocket or two" ;D

i hope this joke of a team fails ASAP. Sydney can't even support 1 team, let alone a 2nd! what was Sheeds thinking taking the job of coaching them??

Is it now the norm for new teams in whatever code to have uninspiring nicknames and guernseys?! :chuck
-
How about calling them the GateCrashers? No,hang on, that name's taken by all the other Interstate sides.
-
Whilst I will be a Tiger supporter until the day I die, I am from the area and I hate the current short list so I have submitted 3 names which I prefer.
1st choice : Western Sydney Wanderers.
2nd choice: Western Sydney Pioneers.
3rd Choice: Western Sydney Explorers.
I'm really not into those modern type names like force or Pride.. :banghead
-
Nothing wrong with using some native birds names - Galahs and Drongos springs to mind. Perhaps a more exotic animal, such as the White Elephants?

I don't really care either way but I have to say tige your options are better than GWS' efforts
I would actually go for Pioneers - I reckon it suits what they are trying to do or what they are supposedly trying to do :rollin
-
I'll vote for Pride, for the obvious gay connotation that their supporters will forever have to carry.
-
I know Wolves has got quite a few votes by Sydneysiders on BF. If they choose Rangers they can forget about anyone Irish or Celtic fans following them :wallywink.
Newspaper subeditors would love the Pioneers tiga ......
"Pioneers get their season back on track"
"Pioneers reach the summit"
"Pioneers lost again"
"Are we Pioneerly there yet?"

Fans like Cougars as GWS hunts name
* By Todd Balym
* The Daily Telegraph
* February 23, 2010
GREATER Western Sydney might have stumbled on a marketing dream thanks to community voting on the name of the new AFL side.
While Stallions, Giants, Pride and Rangers are the four names pre-selected by Team GWS, fans have offered some of their own gems on the club website, with Cougars among the most popular in almost 4000 votes.
Falcons, Bulls, Bobcats, Dingoes and Bushrangers have also rated highly, but none has the same ring to the name or commercial opportunities as Cougars.
With a team boasting athletic young men, the AFL club will be a haven for single middle-aged women - Cougars could order "five Cougars, thanks" - while the rumoured Blue Mountain cougar that prowls the streets at night would be a fantastic mascot if it is ever caught.
Kevin Sheedy could replace Barry Dawson as The Cougar himself, although one wonders if the coach can grow the required moustache for such a role. And Channel 7 could even join the promotion and help bring Courteney Cox out from the US to declare Blacktown to be the real "Cougar Town".
The Swanabies leads the list of funny nominations while V8 fans voted for Commodores and rum drinkers chose Drop Bears.

No turning back now for the AFL...
THE AFL Commission has granted Team GWS a licence to become the 18th team in the AFL competition, starting in 2012.
The announcement of the licence being granted was made on Thursday morning after the formal signing of an agreement with the NSW Government and the RAS for a $60 million redevelopment of the Sydney Showgrounds - the home ground of Team GWS.
Demetriou said he was excited about Team GWS’ planned September launch of its team name and mascot - almost 18 months before the club’s AFL debut in March 2012.
“They’re pretty well advanced in that preparation. I’m looking forward to coming up for that night because I’ve got a bit of a feel for what they’ve got planned,” he said.
Asked if the team mascot would be one of Wolves or Rangers, Demetriou replied with a laugh: “I can’t say, you’ll have to shoot me.”

They must be going to keep Greater in the name then....
It flows better as the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

The GWS home ground is confirmed as the Sydney showground. The ground currently only holds around 16000 so I think the AFL has a bit of developing to do. The field should be big enough. I think it will be a while before the club finds its feet so this may be an interim measure until the supporter base increases to the point where they will move to ANZ Stadium. There would be no bigger momentum killer for a new club than to have regular games with 15-20,000 supporters in a 90,000 seat stadium.
I know we all grumble from time to time about the new kids on the block but as I live in Sydney's west, I would love to see our great game thrive in the area and whilst I am a Tiger through and through, I will probably end up going to quite a few GWS games to get my footy fix. Also much shorter commutes to Tiger games in Sydney would be a big bonus for me.
I still think my suggested names are better than any of the official names but Rangers isn't too bad. Cougars??? Come on.... The only Cougars we have in this town drive around in Volvo's and BMW's looking for Toy Boys. And hey...why don't we use another American based team name...The GIANTS!!! Gimme a break! :banghead

West Sydney Sharks
West Sydney Scorpians
West Sydney Red Backs
West Sydney Wombats

Yep tiga they're redeveloping and upgrading the Showground stadium to 25,000 by 2012 for GWS' first season. I prefer Wolves btw but that's probably cause I've always like that nickname for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Thanks MT. I'd be happy with Wolves too. In the end it really doesn't matter that much to me as the Tigers are my number 1 team. I just need to ensure that my kids stick with the Yellow and black and that all my indoctrination for the past 6 years is not undone by some mascot coming to their school and handing out free GWS merch. I can always respray a mini footy in the right colours but flags and caps are a little more difficult. ;D
-
West Sydney Giants? No.
West Sydney Wolves sounds pretty good. Rolls off the tongue.
-
I prefer the Wolves too. We'll know soon enough. I wonder if the GWS will be able to attract the same calibre of existing players that the GC have done this year. Similarly other clubs will be more prepared and wary of negotiations involving Compensation picks and out of contract players. Expect any uncontracted players to be watched like a hawk during this years off season... ;D

Hopefully we are safe as there's not too name players who'll be out of contract for us next year - Astbury, Browne, Dea, Farmer, Grimes, Griffiths, Jackson, King, Morton, Nahas, Nason, Newman, Rance, Taylor, Thursfield, Webberley. Astbury, Griffiths and Taylor will be the main three there we'll be keen to hold onto.
Geelong, Saints and Doggies will have to watch out given their premiership windows are closing or even closed and players may see the $$$ and jump a ship in need of rebuilding. Hopefully the Pies lose a big name lol.

GWS is targetting North's Andrew Swallow with an offer of up to $900k a season.
Collingwood midfielders Scott Pendlebury, Dale Thomas and Dane Swan, all out of contract at the end of next season, are expected to be targeted by GWS if they do not soon re-commit to the Magpies.

The AFL don't seem to know what to do with GWS. Is it a West Sydney team or a NSW/ACT team? I thought the whole point to having at least two clubs in each state is so there's Aussie Rules footy played in every major mainland city every weekend. Playing 3-4 home games in Canberra in a ACT jumper is hardly going to make Western Sydneysiders think the club is their team ???.

I agree WP that this all could fall over very quickly although for footy's long-term sake we should want GWS or whatever they are going to be called to find a niche and sustainable supporter base in Western Sydney in say 30 years time as the Swans have. I can see why the AFL are doing this in the short-term (GWS gain extra funding from the ACT government they wouldn't have had if they stayed purely a West Sydney club while the AFL gets to have games played in Canberra), but selling the new club as their local club to the infidel ferals in West Sydney lol will come across hollow words with GWS playing home games in Canberra 3 hours away. Anyway we'll find this week what sort of club GWS is going to be. At least as Tiger supporters we know from Sheeds that GWS' colours won't clash with Richmond. There's no yellow or black.

Hey MT I'm one of those Western Sydney infidel ferals!! ;D But for me its Tigers all the way!! However I will go to some GWS games to get a dose of live footy. I would barrack for them over any other current AFL club except for my beloved Tigers. There's a strong chance that a lot of Western Sydney Swans supporters will jump ship (and there are a lot of them) as most are not former South Melbourne Supporters. Any of your dyed in the wool Melbourne based team supporters will probably be like me and stick fat with their clubs they have supported since they were rug rats. I'm sure they will also beat up the local derby GWS v Swans matches as the Battlers V's the Silvertails like they used to do in the Rugby League matches between Western Suburbs Magpies and the Manly Sea Eagles.

Here's their jumper according to the Herald-Sun....
THE AFL's 18th team will be unveiled as the Greater Western Sydney Giants tonight.
The club's new colours are set to be white, gold and black.
The AFL has filed two new trade mark applications with IP Australia overnight for the names “Greater Western Sydney Giants” and “GWS Giants”.
In addition, the league applied to expand its trademark of the name “Giants” to include additional classes of goods and services that will bring it in to line with all other team name trademarks.
What do you think of the GWS name and jumper? Leave a comment below
The club filed another three image trademark applications - one is a stylised "G" believed to be the new club's logo.
The other two are jumper designs featuring the "G" insignia on what appears to be a gold and black background.

i think its disgraceful and our club should lodge an official complaint.
-
They chose Giants as their moniker yet chose the colours of Wolves - having a bit each way ???. The all orange jumper is just horrible. To connect with Sydney/NSW why wouldn't you keep it simple and go with Sky Blue like Sturt's guernsey. The "G" looks a bit like NSW or Western Sydney with Parramatta river in the middle but the jumper as a whole reminds you of the Bears original guernsey :help. They should have got that 6 year old girl who did Port's new jumper to do it than some marketing "guru". It wouldn't been no worse and a hell of a lot cheaper.

I look at it as tangerine.
Not a pretty sight. Reminds of the Brisbane Bears monstrosity from 1987 to about 1992. Hopefully they play just as poo as the Bears did in that guernsey.

Welcome GWS Giants
By Michael Rogers
9:00 PM Tue 16 Nov, 2010
FAREWELL Team GWS and hello the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
Coach Kevin Sheedy and marquee signing Israel Folau joined more than 900 guests as they revealed the identity of the AFL's 18th club at the Sydney Showgrounds on Tuesday night.
The club will also ditch the red, white and blue jumper it wore in the TAC Cup in 2010 in favour of an orange, charcoal and white design with a large capital 'G' logo on the front.
The traditional sky blue of NSW sporting teams will feature on the Giants' away jumper.
Twenty-two of the club's players took the stage on Tuesday night to model two new jumper designs, giving supporters and sponsors a glimpse of the future.
Giants CEO Dale Holmes said the new club's determination to take risks and "think big" was the inspiration behind the choice of nickname and colours.
“Being a Giant is about thinking big, living big and playing big," he said.
"It’s about having the courage, commitment and determination to follow your dreams - sharing a bold ambition and taking risks to become the best that we can be. That is the origins of this club and will be forever part of our culture.
"Over the last two years we have steadily built the foundations of a strong and vibrant club for the next 20 years. The Giants will be an exciting club to follow, creating opportunities and promoting optimism for kids in the region.”
The name and jumper design were the product of an extensive six-month campaign that canvassed more than 27,000 suggestions.
And the consultation will continue with the club set to conduct an online poll to determine which of its two jumper designs will be worn throughout the club's 2011 season in the new NEAFL competition.
The Giants also revealed their first co-major sponsor with automotive company Skoda Australia signing a three-year deal.
Skoda will also be the naming rights sponsor for the Giants' home games at the soon-to-be redeveloped Sydney Showground arena from 2012.
The Giants will hold their first open training session from 4pm on Thursday, November 18 at Blacktown Olympic Park.
And the club's list will receive a further major boost at the 2011 NAB AFL Rookie Draft in December, in which it boasts the first eight selections.

The colours and jumper with the white G is OK.
But the name is horrible!

I agree with torch on the name.
Just went onto there website and seen both there tops. Are they going for the road worker look with the orange.

I think I'm starting to hate them already. Just getting some early practice for next year. Sorry, I dont know what it is just cant put my finger on it. Maybe preseason nerves they might have a crack at a few of our blokes.

Great, it is already referred to as AFL up here and with that look and the name you can bet it will be turned into the Greater Western Sydney Gayants

Greater Western Sydney Giants make Carlton star Marc Murphy a target for AFL debut in 2011 season
* By Craig Hutchison
* Herald Sun
* December 11, 2010 8:23PM
Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy has emerged as a clear target for Greater Western Sydney, with the Giants launching an audacious bid to lure the Blues star north.
The Carlton on-baller is out of contract at the end of next season and is the only Blues player the Giants have set their sights on.
A former No.1 draft pick, he is earmarked for a leadership role at GWS and will be offered a multi-million-dollar deal to head to western Sydney after he was left out of Carlton's leadership group this year.
And while Carlton has opened negotiations with their clever ball magnet, talks are said to have stalled early and to be progressing slowly.
The Blues, whose coach Brett Ratten is also out of contract then and with an uncertain future, are keen to lock away the prized young gun.
Industry sources are adamant GWS has already secured a commitment from one player an unknown young star with its window for discussions still open for another week.
GWS are said to be primarily interested in 18 to 23-year-olds and Murphy fits the mark perfectly.
The Giants feel their premiership window is even further from reach than Gold Coast's and have adopted a strategy to draft young guns.
Interest in Collingwood's Dane Swan has cooled, with Scott Pendlebury and Dale Thomas, both out of contract, higher priorities due to their age.

Wouldn't that be funny, rip the heart out of there Tanking efforts and give them FA in return :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol Please make it happen :pray :pray :pray :pray

I hope they get Murphy & Scully :thumbsup

I hope they get Murphy & Scully :thumbsup
Carlton and Collingwood losing their best players to GWS would be hilarious. Hopefully as with GC we've got all those we want to keep contracted and well out of Sheeds' grasp.
I think Ramps has Scully coming back to the team he barracked for as a kid via free agency ;).
-
Melbourne will be in trouble when free agency comes in Trengove will go back to SA and Scully will be chased by every big club in Melbourne (Richmond, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and maybe Hawthorn). I expect us to be in that process right up to the eyeballs, free agency is afew years away yet so we will have to wait and see what happens. We should try and prize him away earlier if we can. I understand he is out of contract at the end of 2011.

And likely to re-sign sooner rather than later - he aint going anywhere
-
It won't give Blues fans much confidence when all Judd can say he hopes Murphy stays. If Murphy doesn't re-sign before the start of the season it'll add more fuel to the fire as it was just early-2010 when "rumours" of names linked to GC were leaked out and were proven correct.
-
The Age today is saying 3 uncontracted players have been signed up by GWS
"High-profile names out of contract next year and yet to recommit to their clubs include Collingwood trio Dane Swan, Scott Pendlebury and Dale Thomas, Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel, Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy, Melbourne youngster Tom Scully and Brisbane Lions midfielder Daniel Rich."

I hope we screw them both and "snatch away" Scull Dog ourselves

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I reckon Scully might be holding out to join his beloved Tigers, not the Giants... :pray

3aw whispers tonight claimed 5 players are signed up by GWS.

Ramps is busy trying to make it happen via free agency ;D.
Scully, Swan, Murphy, Walker (Crows), Walker (Blues) plus one of Rich, Leuenberger or Clark from Brisbane mentioned in relation to GWS. You'd normally dismiss these rumours but given Gold Coast got all but one of the names mentioned this time last year some of those names may be right. At least no Tigers have been named and hopefully it stays that way :pray unless of course it's someone who we don't care if he goes.

Happy to lose Nahas for a fibro shack and a kebab.

Andy Maher just mentioned on SEN that rumours are about that Scully has already signed with GWS.

Scully to GWS seems odds on now. Also means that eventually he'll come back to Victoria. If hes smart he'll only sign a 2 year deal and put a clause in his contract that says he can nominate a club of his choice in Victoria and that GWS will have to do a deal with that club. If Melbourne lose Scully they have been right royally done over.
-
With all the Scully rumours you'd think the demons would get him resigned up sooner then later so more into the season it goes then I beleive he will go.
-
Scully's manager has come out and apparently said he hasn't signed with GWS and it would be negligent to sign now with the Demons as he's better off waiting to later in the season to maximise his earning potential.

Out of contract this year:
Astbury, Browne, Dea, Farmer, Grimes, Griffiths, Jackson, King, Morton, Nahas, Nason, Newman, Rance, Taylor, Thursfield, Webberley
Astbury and Griffiths will be keepers; Newy as captain will remain; Taylor has raw talent we'd like to see blossom. Any of the rest going wouldn't be the end of the world.

Demetriou reckons GWS will be self-sufficient by their 6th year in the AFL. Wishful thinking! ???
The AFL has also been impressed by the early following of its two newest clubs. The Gold Coast has already attracted 11,000 members in its inaugural year, while Greater Western Sydney has more than 8700 financial members, 2500 ahead of budget. More than half of the Giants members are from Canberra, where the club has a 10-year deal to play 30 premiership matches, with the ACT government contributing more than $23m.
GWS has this year attracted commercial revenue of more than $3.5m. Demetriou said the AFL anticipated the Suns and the Giants would be self-sufficient within six years of their start-ups.

But the bigger question, why are they keeping half of the existing stadium, as it would seem, on one side of the stadium?

It's cheaper. I think the total budget is around $60m (?) with the NSW Government chucking in $45m.
The main issue for mine is will people go there as the whole Homebush precinct isn't the most popular place with Sydneysiders from what I've heard (hardly any pre-game or post-game pubs/restuarants to head to). If there wasn't that spat between the FFA and AFL and had the soccer honchos not cracked the sooks and instead proceeded with the original plans for a brand-new 25k multi-purpose stadium in Blacktown with or now without a World Cup, it could have been a win for both codes and right in the heart of Western Sydney.

Greater Western Sydney throws $2m carrot at Callan Ward
WESTERN Bulldog Callan Ward may have to sacrifice $2 million to remain loyal to his club, his manager Paul Connors says.
Connors revealed the size of the carrots being thrown by Greater Western Sydney, conceding he could not yet guarantee star client Dale Thomas would re-sign at Collingwood.
Ward is out of contract and being pursued by GWS, with the Bulldogs unable to match its five-year deal.
Connors, one of the league's most influential agents, told Superfooty's Front & Square players such as clients Thomas, Ward and Brisbane's Daniel Rich were being offered once-in-a-career deals.
Asked if the difference was as much as $400,000 a season, Connors replied: "More. (Their offers) are outrageous.
"If Callan Ward does want to stay at the Dogs, and I hope he does, for guys like him the quantum is huge.
"(Ward) would love to stay, but no doubt I would have thought the GWS boys wouldn't mind him in their backyard either.
"I can't even believe we're debating that players probably will stay at their clubs even though there's a $500,000 per annum difference. It wouldn't happen in rugby league, but it happens in ... AFL."
Given GWS is prepared to offer Ward at least $800,000 a season, he could pass up more than $2 million in the next five years.
Thomas will probably stay at Collingwood, but Connors said the Giants were pushing hard.
"Dale has given an indication he would like to stay at Collingwood," Connors said.
"They are his instructions to me and I am currently negotiating slowly with Collingwood.
"Would GWS like Dale Thomas? I am sure they would like him on their list.
"It just gets down to that GWS has this pile of money.
"He wants to be at Collingwood, but until he's signed I can't guarantee anything."
Connors is certain Adelaide forward Taylor Walker has signed with the Giants and says he believed Fremantle midfielder Rhys Palmer would head to the AFL's 18th club.
"They seem pretty confident they have got a few, but we haven't heard the names bandied around like with Gold Coast," he said.
"Taylor Walker for mine is going. Rhys Palmer is another I would have some money on going."
Connors has signed the certain No. 1 draft pick for GWS this year in tall Melbourne marking forward Jonathan Patton, and said his potential showed glimpses of Jonathan Brown and Wayne Carey.
He hoped Rich and Matthew Leuenberger would stay at Brisbane, but said the final year of the club's payout to sacked forward Brendan Fevola meant the club's salary cap was tight.

Ward is a good footballer but he's no Ablett worth $5m over 5 years :o.

Two things either Callan Ward is the biggest name they are looking at getting or if blokes like THomas and Scully haven't signed what would they be worth? Food for thought.

GWS don't need a star they need a decent team that won't get thrashed. Should of gone for a coach like Paul Roos who I think is a coach that can get the best out of a team by type of game plan. Call his style boring but at least it will help them not get flogged every week and maybe with a few decent players finish around 12th.
-
I agree tiger101 as far as on-field but for off-field promotion GWS need to land a big name. To most Sydneysiders it'll be Callan who?

They did go for Roos. Too loyal to the Swans and knocked them back.
Agree they don't need to sign a star, they need experienced bodies so their kids don't get smashed at stoppages.
Their stars will come from the plethora of wicked draft picks.

heard a whisper that Bartel is GWS bound.
"It’s still being worked through at Geelong, but I’m pretty confident that in the not-too-distant future it’ll be settled," Bartel said.
It is understood the new deal is a four-year one, effectively tying the 27-year-old to the club for the rest of his playing days.
"It could be, it’s just some of the finer details we’re working through at the moment," he said on The Footy Show.

I would have said that about Gary Ablett this time last year.

Well according to Barrett (yeah I know), Scully and Ward are GWS's two main targets this year. Scully has been offered $7 million on a 6 year deal by GWS :o.
GWS are aiming to sign 5 out of contract players this year and then ramp it up next year when they'll go after big names. Gubby Allen reckons GWS can win a flag by 2015-16 which will be their 4th-5th year in the comp.

For those who know Sydney in particular that area; what's the puliv transport like out there?
And how long would it take to get out there from the airport
-
Transport out there is good.
10min train from Domestic Terminal to Central
25-30min train to Olympic Park, station is right next to the Showgrounds
You could even get a train direct to Lidcombe from the airport and change there to the Olympic Park train.
Should take around an hour from when you collect your bags to when you scan your ticket at the stadium gates unless you are an absolute mork.
-
thanks gerks :thumbsup
-
The other thing that they do in Sydney is lay on the major event bus service, which runs on prescribed routes where there isn't a train service. The cost of the bus service is hidden in the ticket prices, so for travellers, it's free.
The bus service works really well, until you realise that you still have to get back into your car to finish the trip home after the bus drops you off.
-
I'm morally opposed to buses but the train is also free if you have an event ticket.

Ward jumps Bulldog ship to join GWS
Jake Niall
August 31, 2011
CALLAN Ward will be a Greater Western Sydney player next year, with the emerging young midfielder having decided to leave the Western Bulldogs to take up a massive five-year offer with the AFL's expansion team.
Ward, linked to GWS for much of this season, is expected to announce his departure within the next week, most likely after the Bulldogs' final game against Fremantle on Saturday.
Ward will join GWS on a five-year contract believed to be worth $750,000-$800,000 a year, or between $3.75 million and $4 million over the life of the contract. This is expected to be front-ended in the manner of Gary Ablett's five-year deal with Gold Coast.
While disappointed to lose a player of Ward's calibre, the Bulldogs have been prepared for the worst, having made a strong pitch for Ward and upped their offer to the midfielder in recent weeks.
Officials met Ward last Thursday to try to persuade him to stay, but sources have confirmed that Ward has decided to take up the GWS offer and become a key player in establishing the AFL's 18th team.
Club president David Smorgon acknowledged on Monday that he was ''not confident'' of retaining Ward, whom the Dogs offered a three-year deal believed to be worth $400,000-$450,000 a season, or close to $1.3 million, a long way short of the GWS contract. Ward is a genuine local player at the Bulldogs, having grown up within walking distance of Whitten Oval. His imminent departure will mean the Bulldogs become the second club to lose two players to the expansion teams, having already lost Jarrod Harbrow to Gold Coast at the end of last season.
Ward's exit is considered likely to be followed by that of Melbourne's 2009 No. 1 draft pick, Tom Scully, who has been offered an even more substantial long-term contract than Ward. Almost no one within AFL circles, outside of the Demons, believes Scully is much chance to stay with Melbourne.

Sad to see what our game is becoming
Very disappointing decision by young Callan - $$$ before family and more importantly mates
I actually thought unlike Scully he would stay because of his locals ties ...oh well money talks

Professional?
Excellent decision by Mr. Ward, if true.
You play sport at the highest level to win. Bulldogs are never going to win anything.
If you want to hang with your mates and live under mum's skirt, get a real job and play local footy.
This is the AFL babe.

Sometimes the almighty $$ isn't the most important thing gerks.
His Mum is actually happy for him to go as I am sure his mates are too
But not all players have to be like Judd & Ablett Jnr and chase the $$$
I honeslty thought his ties down here would keep him here, was certianly the mail around the mighty West a few months back ;D
And BTW you seriously think GWS is going to win big in its first few years? :o

I am in partial to players wanting to go.
I applaud Bartel for not going but at the same time you got to look after yourself and your family.
Who knows his career might get cut short at the Buldogs through injury. Good luck to him i say.
I just cant understand how they would pay that for him. I mean whats he actually done apart from be better than Mcmahon ::)

Sounds like another positive point on why he should chase the money by GWS.
Sheedy must see alot of potential in him that he isn't seeing in some of his youngsters or the ones there looking at drafting.

Sheedy must see alot of potential in him that he isn't seeing in some of his youngsters or the ones there looking at drafting.
In Ward's case it would seem money is the factor but being young and the Dogs in transition means he won't see success for the Dogs at least for another five or six years around the time one would expect if all goes well at GWS given their push along they may be playing for a flag.
In so many words why stay at the Dogs for 500K and no success in the next 5 years when you can play for 800K at GWS for no success albeit until the kids get mature and by then who cares you are 1.5 million dollars better off.
That is why these new franchises may target players from successful on field clubs but you can't essentially buy success Gary Ablett the exception and GC 17 so you go to the less successful ones dangle the carrot of plenty of cash and probable success and eventually some will bite.
Sheeds knew what he was doing. Started at the Collingwood's Hawthorn's Geelongs and nothing came and eventually got to the struggling clubs and the rumours have not stopped all season.

Ward confirms move to GWS.
The Bulldogs issued a statement saying Ward had told the club he was leaving.
“We have done everything we responsibly could to keep Callan at the Western Bulldogs,” chief executive Simon Garlick said.
“While it’s disappointing that Callan has made this decision, we will be looking to ensure we receive appropriate compensation to enable us to continue to build on our solid core of experienced players and exciting pool of young talent.

Seen that on the news. He also said he was going up there with an open mind.
Which is also a worrying statement for the demons.
-
i dont know whats worrying Tiger.
I believe Demons are quietly confident of 2 first round draft picks and therefore a Scully loss doesnt seem so bad after all.
Whats he played 30 games

Worrying probably wasn't the right word. I should of said.
Demon fans that want him to stay would have to be less confident in him staying by hearing comments like that.
But your also right about the compensation given his knee troubles. Who knows if they get 2 first rounds they could snare them selves that big key forward Watts doesn't seem to be turning out to be with one.

He will be a Gaint with full pockets by Midday today ;D :thumbsup

Wow hold the phone who seen this coming. What a huge surprise :rollin
TOM Scully will announce his intention to join Greater Western Sydney at a media conference in Sydney today.
The Melbourne midfielder is believed to have agreed to an offer for the next six years for an estimated $6 million.
Follow the Scully announcement here live from midday
Scully, 20, and his family flew to Sydney yesterday for the announcement.
Melbourne officials were to be advised of the move this morning.

GWS certainly cleaned up yesterday. First Scully, Power and then potential top 3 pick Coniglio choosing footy over cricket.

I wonder if his counting Power in that because they haven't officially announced it yet.

There really starting to set up a group of dad's army up there. Signing Ex demon captain James McDonald.
TOM Scully will have a familiar face alongside him in new colours next year - his 2010 captain at Melbourne, James McDonald.
McDonald, 35 next month, has been coaxed into reviving his AFL career with Greater Western Sydney as a playing assistant coach.
He has been talked into a hands-on role by Giants director of football, Graeme "Gubby" Allan, and coaches Kevin Sheedy and Mark Williams.
"It's a bit of a unique one," McDonald said last night. "A playing-coaching role."
McDonald has been mentoring the club's Melbourne-based players in a part-time role.
He has kept fit playing for his original club, Old Xaverians, in the Victorian amateurs. He played in the team beaten by St Bedes/Mentone in the A grade preliminary final on Sunday.
"'Gubby' asked me three or four months ago if I was keen to take it a step further with an on-field role.

Fair enough.
If GWS/GC aren't going to use the system as it was intended (ie handing over draft picks for mature players), I don't think opposition clubs should do them any favours.
-
All bodes well for lids remaining at Tiger land, if GWS as expected were to make a play for Goddard.
Its hard to see them fitting in Goddard, Israel and Scully all on multi million dollar contracts as well as keeping Ward and going for a Lids type also

He wouldn't be a bad option. Even if he would only be able to play half the season. He'll take the number 1 defender and even a 3rd man up from there developing 2nd target up forward.

Can't blame any of these young men for heading up there, I reckon Nate Brown might say the same.
To be honest I reckon Dustin is a very silly boy for not taking their offer, it made the one Scully is reported to have signed for look like a rookie list contract.
-
To be honest I reckon Dustin is a very silly boy for not taking their offer, it made the one Scully is reported to have signed for look like a rookie list contract.
Something tells me Dusty, having lived up in Sydney for a period in his youth, had no intention of returning there even if he could continue to play AFL at a new franchise. Also unlike the Dees, playing for the Tiges means playing for a big club with a large passionate supporter base in front of big crowds at the 'G. It's not as though either he won't become one of the highest paid players at Richmond. If and when we start playing finals regularly, Dusty will be one who will drag people through the gate as a poster boy for Richmond and the League as a whole which means sponsors and extra $$$ for him. He'll end up on a good wicket.
-
If Dustin Martin invests his money properly he wont need a GWS contract to do well in life, he will leave RFC a multi millionaire hopefully as a Premiership Player and a Legend. So it all depends how he invests the money he gets, if he invests properly he will get good returns on substantial contracts, if he peees the money up a wall then thats another matter. IMHO he seems pretty level headed and I'd doubt that he would be peeing money up a wall. He will do very well in life from being a Richmond player.
-
I know trade week isn't over but apparently Stephen Silvagni saido n Trade week radio that there not trading any of there picks out. So that leaves them with this list of experienced players Tom Scully, Callan Ward, Phil Davis, Rhys Palmer Sam Reid and there chasing and likely to get Dean Brogan, Chad Cornes and Luke Power. How do we see there selections compared to Gold Coast.
I personally think none of them have the skill to keep the team together and lead on field like Ablett has.

Tom Scully's dad joins Greater Western Sydney in a recruiting role
by: Grant Baker
From: Herald Sun
October 26, 2011 7:29PM
TOM Scully's father Phil has been employed by Greater Western Sydney as a recruiter.
Former Melbourne star Tom was signed last month on a $6 million, five-year deal to join the AFL’s newest club.
In a statement released tonight, the Giants admitted Phil Scully’s wage would be included under the club’s salary cap – a situation believed to be a first in the AFL.
It is unclear when GWS first approached Phil Scully – who has previously worked for the Sydney Swans as a Melbourne-based recruiter – and what if any bearing those negotiations may have had on Tom Scully’s decision to quit the Demons.
Giants recruiting manager Stephen Silvagni said in a statement: “Phil has an obvious passion and understanding for the game as well as first-hand experience with what is expected of the players coming through the system,” he said.
“He’s spent the last two years working for the Swans, but expressed an interest to the Giants about moving into a fulltime position.
"He has had a lot of experience with the talent pathway in Victoria and he is going to be a valued addition to our team.”

Maybe they not making the minimum salary cap thats why they put his dad in it.
Only real reason I can think of why they would add his salary under the cap.

Greater Western Sydney Giants sack CEO Dale Holmes
EXCLUSIVE by Phil Rothfield
The Daily Telegraph
October 27, 2011 3:23PM
JUST a few months before their first game, GWS chief executive Dale Holmes has been sacked.
The AFL is expected to release a statement later this afternoon to confirm Holmes is leaving after less than 12 months in the job.
The Daily Telegraph understands Holmes fell out with two GWS board members and had a prickly relationship with the AFL hierarchy.
Holmes was appointed the Giants' CEO in March. He had previously held down the position of CEO of AFL NSW.
He had been instrumental in the signing of NRL star Israel Folau.

-
GREATER Western Sydney chief executive Dale Holmes has been sacked.
Giants boss Dale Holmes was cut free on the same day the Herald Sun revealed Tom Scully's father had been employed by the club as a full-time recruiter.
Scully Sr will earn a six-figure salary, which will be included in the club's salary cap in an unprecedented ruling.
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/giants-lose-ceo-after-secret-scully-deal/story-e6frf9jf-1226178542992
The media have already tried to join the dots on his sacking to the Scully Sr job.
haha 'Scullygate'
-
Am I the only one who doesn't understand the problem with Scully Snr's job?
The bloke worked for Sydney so he obviously has some recognised credibility to do the job.
Should Ty Vickery's old man be included in our cap?
-
Well along with my tiger insider membership, I picked up a GWS membership today which was a pretty reasonable price. Don't beat me up over it as I just want to get to the footy and see some games. at least I'll have great seats for the Tigers match at Skoda. My Son and I will probably be the only Tiger supporters amongst a sea of Orange in the members stand for that game. :outtahere
Also for those interested, (not sure if it has been posted yet) I have the final ground dimensions for Skoda Stadium. Its actually 3m longer than the MCG at 163m and it is 2 metre's narrower than Ethihad at 126m so the ground may suit the Tigers well.

Don't worry I wouldn't be surprised if a fair few AFL followers pick up a GWS membership just because of the price and want to go see games.

I went the Platinum for me and my son Gerks but I wonder if it will allow me access to the BBQ deck. It looks awesome! ;D
Not sure If I'll make the trek to Manuka but it might be an experience. Last time I went there was for s Swans Tigers trial match where we got hammered and Gus was almost BOG pipped by Cam Howat. I think my match report with photos of a young Gus is still on here somewhere! :lol

Platinum? That's the highest level you rich bitch i think you'll get access to the bloody barbie deck! :lol
You're right it does look great, they should have done the same thing at PRO when the did the redevelopment.
My folks are in CBR so i usually catch a game down there at some point but someone else can pay for me to sit in that arctic bedpan.

So now we know who the GWS have drafted the debate of who's got the most potential list GC vs GWS will start. How do you all view the GWS list.

Gerks I got 70 bucks off the normal price due to buying foundation memberships so I thought why not. Plus I have been buying Tiger insider/on the bench memberships for ages so I have saved a few dollars over the years. Had I been in Melbourne, I would have bought the same sort of package for Tigers games. I think I spent too many years climbing up trees and Advertising signs in arctic conditions at places like the Junction and Lake Ovals to ensure that I really appreciate a good seat in the stands.
My reasoning to go for the best seats at Skoda Stadium was to secure them for future years as I my Son and I will always get first option on them for future seasons. I think it also entitles me to access the post match functions as well which will be good to get the odd autograph for my Lad. :thumbsup

I didn't think of that MT. Hopefully he will either get his act together or be playing at Coburg by the time round 12 comes around. :pray
And yes I Like to refer to it a supporting footy also rather than supporting GWS. Tigers will always be #1 for me. I just love going to see live matches and I've really missed it since moving up here many years ago.

Here's what a potential GWS side will now look like according to the AFL website. Will they win a game next year?
B: Tim Golds, Phil Davis, Luke Power
HB: Matthew Buntine, Setanta O'hAilpin, Sam Reid
C: Stephen Coniglio, Tom Scully, Adam Treloar
HF: Chad Cornes, Jonathon Patton, Jeremy Cameron
F: Curtley Hampton, Israel Folau, Devon Smith
Foll: Dean Brogan, Callan Ward, Rhys Palmer
Inter: Dylan Shiel, Adam Tomlinson, Jonathon Giles, James McDonald

They'll win some games for sure
dunno about O'failpin at CHB though
-
That looks ordinary at best.
GC had GAJ, Bock and Brennan that were very useful players.
Can't see Power, Cornes, Setanta, Scully etc getting them over in any to be honest.
-
Bock and Brennan were very useful players.
I didn't think so, thought they were ok at best
Bock is as slow as Cornes, i think Cornes will be just as good a pick up
Brennan was Brennan, flaked it more often than he turned up
Putting GAJ and Scully to one side, i'd take
Ward, Palmer, Power, McDonald, Cornes, Brogan over
Rischi, Harris, Harbrow, Bock, Brennan, Fraser
-

how dare they make such a claim! >:(

Cornes can't play down back anymore. Might be useful for 1-2 goals a game next year though

No Taylor Adams?? IMO this kid is more ready development wise than Buntine. I think the GWS backline will be their weakness. I don't think they will have any problems kicking goals with the likes of Patton and Coniglio, its stopping them that will be the problem.

Not a big deal in the long-term as GWS will struggle to win a game next year so they might as well sort any injury problems with their first round picks out now. In the short-term though it will further stuff up putting any semblance of a spine on the park as GWS don't have that many KPPs as it is.

I agree MT. They went midfielder crazy rather than picking more KPP's. Pressure's on Folau now. Well it looks like I'll hopefully be enjoying a Tiger victory in round 12 from "The Good Seats" at Skoda. :thumbsup

Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer in Greater Western Sydney's sights
by: Mark Robinson
From: Herald Sun
February 09, 2012
CARLTON is confident budding stars Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Kreuzer will reject potential million-dollar offers and re-sign with the Blues.
Kreuzer and Gibbs will be out of contract at season's end and join Essendon's Michael Hurley, St Kilda's Brendon Goddard, Richmond's Brett Deledio and Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury as targets for GWS. Industry speculation has Hurley top of the pops.

Yep they should get flogged in round 1 with that side and because they haven't played together in a real AFL match. Anything under 8-10 goals would actually be a semi-respectable loss.
Their only chance of winning any game this year is having their full list to choose from (major question marks on those over 30 playing anywhere close to 22 games) and catching another bottom side mid-year whose season is shot and is way down on any confidence.
They are going to need to chase current 21-25 y.o. opposition players big time at the end of the season as there is a massive age bracket gap with so many teens and so many 30+ y.o.
-
GWS has gone with three co-captains for its debut season - Luke Power, Callan Ward and Phil Davis.

The Bumblings said they wanted to "protect" Hurley from all the attention re his contract status ;D

Got my GWS membership pack yesterday minus......wait for it..........My membership card & seating info. :rollin
I think its going to be a long year if they can't even organise a simple bloody member pack to include the most important part. What is really funny is that I received the membership card lanyard but now I have nothing to put into it. :banghead

And people winge about Richmond :lol
Honestly, in all my dealings with the Orange Goblins, and there have been more than there ought to be, they have been effing hopeless.

Hurley off the GWS shopping list. The Bombers paid $3m for 5 years to keep him.

I don't know much about Essendon and there salary cap space but would this hamper there chances of out bidding us on any free agents in the coming years.
Cloke didn't sound to convincing for mine on the footy show last night talking about post career setting up his life. A few million towards that couldn't hurt him.

Makes it harder for the Bombers to keep Ryder. Signing up both to big $$$ would really put their salary cap under pressure in the upcoming years.

LOL Barrett knwoing Cloke's internet access and google searches. Sheesh Hutchy has taught him well :wallywink.
As for Cloke - it would be hilarious if he left. The Pies would know how we felt in 1983.

Thought GWS were fantastic against Sydney.
Tried their hearts out all night and actually showed some good signs.

Here's some shots from today. A lot of muppets currently running around and putting the ground through its paces. Last thing they want is another Etihad or ANZ turf debacle.
I'll be going to the GWS v Bombers game on Sat night so for those coming up for the Tigers game, I'll let you all know what the ground is like for viewing, weather protection and facilities like food, parking etc....
As I said to gerks, I think the the biggest screen in the southern hemisphere will be pushed to its limits with catering for the Bombers score on Saturday night. ;D

AFL wouldn't be happy with Sheedy's comments on supporters backgrounds.
GWS Giants coach Kevin Sheedy has been labelled a "muppet" by Wellington Phoenix skipper Andrew Durante after his comments in the aftermath of the Giants' capitulation to Adelaide.
The Giants were thumped by 135 points on Sunday afternoon with a crowd of just under 6,000 turning up to watch the winless side’s first home game of the year in the Olympic precinct.
Sheedy said the club didn’t have anyone from the "immigration department" handling their fan recruitment as, apparently, Western Sydney Wanderers do.
"It’s a pity because that’s how many turned up after a pretty solid performance against Essendon last week," he said.
"So, it’s just going to go and tell everybody how tough it’s going to be to build this club. It’s as simple as that.
"We don’t have the recruiting officer called the immigration department recruiting fans for Western Sydney Wanderers – we don’t have that on our side.
"We’re actually going to start up a whole new ball park and go and find fans because that’s what happens when you bring a lot of people through, channel into a country and put them into the west of Sydney and they build a club like that one year and all of a sudden they’ve got 10,000 fans and probably 20,000 going to a game."
Sheedy's comments caused a stir on social media platforms, but the coach took to Twitter in an attempt to clarify their meaning on Sunday night.
"All I said was that Wanderers have an advantage because most people that migrate to Australia know soccer - it's a world sport,'' the four-time premiership coach posted.
"We have to work a lot harder to attract people to our game and we will. I am on record for praising Wanderers and what they have achieved.''
It did little to abate social-media condemnation, led by the likes of Durante.
"Sheedy you #muppet,'' the Sydney-born defender wrote.
"If he wanted more people from the west coming 2 support..He's totally blown that now. Next home game will have 4k.''

wots a wellington phoenix durante :huh
-
Sheedy is a muppet. Well said whoever you are. They got 5k there because they are complete and utter poo. They lost to Melbourne FFS. How bad can it get? :lol
-
And Sheedy wants a 3rd Sydney team... :wallywink
I also read an article on afl.com.au today that has Sheedy saying that teams were gutless when it came to trading for mini-draft picks. They wanted Dale Thomas, Jake Carlisle or Matthew Kreuzer for a chance to get a 17 year old kid. I'm sure all these sides are spewing they didn't trade away a gun player for an untried 17 year old!
-
they need at least 60 years before they can be judged
if in 60 years time they can come off a spoon year and get 11,000 to a game they will be on par with Parramatta :thumbsup
no need to compare with summer soccer, people are on holidays then and want to get out more in the nice weather and vandalise public buildings, throw flares etc.
-

They will be when Hogan is kicking 17 goals against them and Jaeger is pocketing his 2nd Brownlow ;D

West Sydney mostly wogs and lebs that like soccer / rugby
Sheedy racist out of line.

Idiotic from Sheeds to use the demographics of Western Sydney as an excuse for the poor crowd although in his madness he's deflected attention away from him being coach of a side that was flogged by 20 goals and that hasn't got within a final margiin of 5 goals against any side including the hapless Demons.
Everyone knew the GWS crowd figures were going to be as awful as their onfield results in the first 5-7 years. Sydneysiders love winners and are the biggest bandwagoners in the country. They'll pack out one off events or what's the latest fad (any code) but don't turn up in numbers week in week out. All the Western Sydney NRL clubs - Parra, West Tigers and Penrith - are struggling onfield this year and had terrible crowds on the weekend too despite be around for 50+ years and playing in so called Rugby League heartland. Parra had 11k, Penrith had 7k and Wests vs Cronulla had just 9k between two Sydney-based clubs. Sheeds let his own frustration and the constant Aussie Rules bashing from the Sydney media get to him. Sure the Wanderers did fantastically for their first season for a new Soccer club but they still only averaged home crowds of 12k in a season they finished top of the table and made the Grand Final. Sheeds should have shut up with the ethnic crap and let us all see how many people turn up to Wanderers games when they start losing. As Sydney FC found out after they won the A-league title in the first year, crowds fall off as quickly as they jump on the bandwagon up there.
ps. Welligton Pheonix crowds this season were GWS-esque (avg. 6,882) so no one from that club can talk.

Get in Eddie's ear to threaten a rebel league unless they're forced to break up their list - 10 years plus of a manufactured side from a non-football state with no fans dominating the comp. will kill the AFL. It's a stuffing joke.
-
if it stops the hawks wining then i personally done give a f what they do.

You'll be singing a different tune after GWS have just won their 5th flag in a row at an MCG only two-thirds full with only their 5,000 fans making any noise or contributing to the atmosphere. All while Richmond's membership is struggling to hit 30k and the tins are starting to rattle again.

I hate Sydney but they were dudded by the AFL by taking away their home ground advantage and making them play at that terrible surface called ANZ stadium. The SCG would have been available one of the last 3 days. It would have been a different game at the SCG. The swans were minor premiers and were almost punished because of it.
-
My heart bleeds
-
Poor Swannies... :'(
-
Eff off Sydney!
Happy with the result today (and I'm not just talking about the twos winning the flag at my local!)
Good GWS!
-
When I was a kid, if anyone had said you'd get 60k at an Aussie Rules game between two Sydney clubs, they would've had the men in white coats pay them a visit.
Obviously, it was a Swans dominate crowd but GWS had a decent amount of support behind the goals and roar when they kicked a goal for club that's only been around for 5 years.
The ANZ ground looked the best it's ever looked as well on TV (although players were still slipping over). Too bad it was the last ever Aussie Rules game to be played there.

Yes I'm so glad our future's being sacrificed so that a few thousand more people in Sydney will have more than a passing interest in the game and the broadcasters might get 3 or 4 extra ratings points in NSW....or at least enough not to get out rated by repeats of Wifeswap again....
-
GWS will not win a prelim against the Hawks.
Dogs can beat them too
in a way I almost hope they win the next 5 flags though to show what a farce this competition has become

Yep - only delayed the inevtable by a year or two....probably won't stop the impending streak of flags heading to Sydney though.
stuff 'em all including Footscray - parasitic fanless minnows propped up by us & Collingwood...hurry up and get that rebel comp. going Eddie...you know you want to...
