“We’ve always sort of wanted to give him the opportunity to play (in the midfield).  With Trent (Cotchin) being out, and probably our midfield being a little bit light at the moment, it was an opportunity to see how he went,” Hardwick said.

“He was pretty good early, but it’s one of those experiments that’s going to take a little bit of time to see the long-term benefits of it.

“It’s a different kettle of fish playing midfield as compared to down back.  But I thought he showed some really good signs.

“He’s incredibly clean, tough.  I enjoy what he gave us tonight (Friday night).

“He’ll only get better for the run . . .”

I haven't watched the game back yet but did he play onball in the second half? I remember thinking he didn't but may be wrong. First round draft choices are for midfielder or KPP. Not back pockets.
Blind Freddie can see he is stale in the backline.

I actually can't remember seeing him in the third quarter so he could have gone missing or gone back.
The main issue is, I think Vlas plays a valuable role in the back line. It'd be great if we had a limited player who could play that role perfectly so we don't waste the talent Vlas has but I can't think of anyone else who can do it?

It's robbing Peter to pay Paul.

ideally:  Deledio, Cotchin, Edwards, Rioli - forward line

middle: Vlastuin, Martin, CEllis, Miles

someone needs to play as a defender

The best way to ease the pressure on our defenders is having a midfield that wins more ball.

I'm fully behind the Vlas in the guts movement now. Our midfield is our biggest weakness IMO and it's where his ferocity and clean ball use will be best utilized.

He wasn't playing well in defence this year anyway.

Who could have ever guessed he'd go well in the middle?

I'm hopeful he can be a permanent mid but i don't think he's fit enough for a permanent midfield position at this stage. Maybe with another big preseason we can see him more in the middle. At the moment we will have to be content with just limited time in there.

Yep. Looks good in congestion when he's got energy, but his lateral movement, particularly defensively, is pretty ordinary when he's gassed.

We look so much better when he is on ball. He just adds class and a strong body around the ball. Love it!

Oh look, in a funny sort of way, I think we're seeing his development in the back pocket come to fruition in the midfield...
