Martin anything but dusty in season opener

IT TOOK two seconds. After completing the most dominant season by a midfielder in modern football last year, Dustin Martin didn't have to wait long for his first touch of 2018.

As he ran onto the MCG for the first time since Richmond's euphoric premiership win over Adelaide, Martin stood at the opening centre bounce against Carlton on Thursday night, copped a friendly bump from Blues opponent Patrick Cripps and then read ruckman Toby Nankervis' tap perfectly.

Within a flash, he had taken control of the ball, had a couple of steps and sent it deep inside Richmond's forward 50. He was off and running. Whether he will be stopped remains to be seen.

It was the opening game of last season that kick started Martin to his spectacular campaign, when he gathered 34 disposals and kicked four goals against the Blues. It was also when he picked up the first of his 11 three-vote Brownlow Medal performances.

This one wasn't quite as scintillating from Martin, but it was no dusty start for the 26-year-old either. The Tigers conceded the first five goals of the game, but it was Martin who helped turn things back his side's way late in the first quarter with a powerful one-on-one mark against Jacob Weitering and a precision 55-metre pass off one step to Jacob Townsend, who converted his shot.

The special passages of play continued. In the second quarter, as the ball bobbled around half-forward for the Tigers, Martin gathered and fell to the ground. He remained composed as he did, spotting Cotchin in the corner of his eye and hitting him with a sweeping handball into space.

As the Tigers started the second half four points down, Martin shaped as the match-winner. And as they entered the final term four points up, he still seemed the Tiger most likely to drag his side to an important round one win.

But the Blues kept on coming, and made it hard for Martin to dominate. There was more hustle and bustle to his game than dashing run, and meanwhile Carlton was unearthing its own certified 'Next Big Thing' as Charlie Curnow kicked five goals in a breathtaking display.

Martin was in no mood to be outshone, though. Eight minutes into the last term, and with the Tigers leading by a point but looking shaky, Martin had his moment. He cleanly collected the ball in the forward 50, sprinted through one tackle attempt and past another, before kicking an on-the-run checkside goal.

The Tigers booted the next three majors to all but seal their 26-point win, and Martin finished with a team-high 32 disposals, six clearances, six inside-50s and a big say on the result.

Not that any of that was surprising. After his Brownlow Medal, Norm Smith Medal, premiership, best and fairest and AFLPA MVP award last year, Martin enters this season not only as the leading player of the competition but also the biggest star in the country's biggest game.

Every move he makes and every game he dominates – and even the game or two he might be quiet – will attract attention and comment. Not that it will bother him, for that is one of Martin's contrasting qualities: he is as identifiable as he is introverted.

On the field, there are other idiosyncrasies. He is imposing without being aggressive, bold without being brazen, and imitable (think of the 'Don't argues' practiced at local clubs around Australia each week) but one of a kind with his imprint on a game.

And if Thursday night is any indication, he looks determined to do it all again in 2018.

Dusty's bag of six:

Dusty delivers up forward
Richmond would be pleased with its ability to win matches in recent weeks without the need for Brownlow medallist Dustin Martin to be at his very best. Martin had 21 touches and one behind last week against Hawthorn but wasn't in the Tigers' best few players. Again against the Lions, he spent a lot of time in the goalsquare in an attempt to evade the clutches of tagger Mitch Robinson. He didn't find a heap of the ball, but he still kicked a career-high six goals. Beloved by Tiger fans, Martin ran to the bench in the dying minutes to rousing applause and a "Dusty" chant.

Dustin Martin reminds Wayne Schwass of Leigh Matthews (H-Sun)

Dustin Martin reminded Wayne Schwass of Leigh Matthews and Tigers champ is starting to prove why

JON RALPH,
Herald Sun
April 16, 2018

DUSTIN Martin was only 32 games into his AFL career when Wayne Schwass went all-in on his talent.

Triple best-and-fairest winner Schwass said he had never seen a player who reminded him so much of Leigh Matthews.

Martin, 19, had just beaten up Brisbane with a five-goal virtuoso performance as a midfielder pushing deep forward. Sound familiar?

On Saturday Martin finally eclipsed that goal tally with a personal-best six-goal haul playing mostly as a deep forward against the Lions.

And in doing so he gave us a fascinating insight into how he might play out the next seven years of his highly-paid career.

Let’s make one thing clear.

There is only one Leigh Matthews in over a century of football.

You only need to rewind 31 seasons to his 91-goal, 658 possession season in 1977.

To put it in perspective, he averaged 3.8 goals and 27 possessions that year, with three performances of seven goals and 30-plus touches.

That’s rarefied air.

But Schwass’s prophecy about Martin’s skill set seven years on looks eerily prophetic.

“I haven’t seen a bloke who has reminded me of Leigh Matthews in the same way,” Schwass said in June 2011.

“The rider is that he has a hell of a long way to go. But Leigh was an uncompromising rover who then went forward and finished his career, and I am not saying Dustin will kick 900 goals, but I see that versatility in him.

“I think he could kick 400 or 500 goals. He is in his second year and knows how to kick goals, so he can play four or five years in the midfield, and then go forward with great impact.

“This kid could be a gun mid who also has a real upside as a much more intimidating version of Brad Johnson.

“If he has space in the forward 50 to do his stuff one-on-one, there aren’t many who can beat him.”

Martin might share the low centre of gravity and menacing air as Matthews, but until last year he was only a goal-a-game midfielder.

After 150 games he had exactly 150 goals.

But after 37 goals last year he already has a dozen goals for the year, with Martin yet to turn 27.

Leigh Matthews is considered the greatest player to play the game.

Matthews not only kicked goals as a midfielder, he finished off his career with hauls of 74, 79, 77 and 56 goals.

Martin now has 199 goals from 182 games, but it’s not hard to see him averaging two goals a game from here on in.

Given his contract states he will be playing until at least 33, he won’t end up too far short of Schwass’s prediction of 500.

In the short term, why wouldn’t Martin play deep forward for much of this year.

Damien Hardwick has already forecast that type of role for him while the Tigers continue building midfield depth.

Admittedly against a dismal Lions outfit, he had 17 possessions, 10 score involvements, six inside-50s and six goals.

Surely that’s more effective than 30 possessions and two goals, especially as the Tigers have such midfield depth.

Reece Conca tried the patience of Tiger fans but his past fortnight is excellent, while Richmond believes Jack Higgins will eventually become a midfielder.

Yet if anyone had any concerns about the Tigers paying up for seven more years of Dustin Martin, they should think again.

Like Matthews and Kevin Bartlett and even key forward Alastair Lynch before him, his amazing versatility will prolong his career well into his 30s.

Six of the best makes Dusty footy's No.1

HE'S SCOOPED up just about every accolade available and now Richmond superstar Dustin Martin has added another achievement to reinforce his reputation as the best player in the competition.

Martin has overtaken Geelong gun Patrick Dangerfield as No.1 on the Schick AFL Player Ratings, as determined by Champion Data, ending a reign by the Cat that lasted almost two years.

The dual All Australian became just the fifth person to take over top position since the standings began in 2012.

It's the latest achievement on Martin's long list after his stellar 2017 saw the bullocking midfielder win the Norm Smith Medal as the Tigers won the flag, the Brownlow Medal and the Jack Dyer Medal.

His versatility was on show last Saturday, with his six goals helping Richmond punish a Brisbane outfit that managed just two.

Since the start of last season Martin has led the AFL in several areas. He ranks No.1 for average inside-50s (5.9), score assists (1.9) and centre bounce clearances (3.4), and his fierce fend-off means he also leads the competition in broken tackles (3.1).

His ability to not only move the ball forward but help his side keep possession is reflected in his ranking as the best player in the AFL in that time for average retained metres gained (317m).

For Dangerfield to hit back and reclaim the No.1 spot after round five, he needs to outscore Martin by at least 10.5 points. To put that into context, Martin has averaged 21.4 points per game since the start of last year.

The Player Ratings take into account an individual's past 40 games over a rolling two-year period.
History of No.1 players

Gary Ablett (Gold Coast) – round one, 2012-round four, 2015
Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood) – round five, 2015-round 16, 2015
Nat Fyfe (Fremantle) – round 17, 2015-round 11, 2016
Patrick Dangerfield (Geelong) – round 12, 2016-round three, 2018
Dustin Martin (Richmond) – round four, 2018-?

From Barrett's latest 'sliding doors' column:

IF .... there's one thing left that Dusty hasn't yet done ...

THEN .... it's kick a bag. As in a double-figure bag. Come on Dimma, give him licence to do so at the 'G on Tuesday night.

The proof Richmond’s Dustin Martin is ‘the last of the full forwards’, or perhaps the first of a new breed

April 19, 2018
Max Laughton@maxlaughton
FOX SPORTS

FORGET Dustin Martin being the midfielder who floats forward. He might just be the only pure forward we have.

The Brownlow medallist was stellar for Richmond last weekend, kicking a career-high six goals in a huge win over Brisbane.

But he spent much of his time not just floating around the forward 50, but as proper a deep forward as we’ve seen for a while. And according to Fox Footy analyst David King, it means he’s either a trendsetter or a throwback.

“He plays his own game, and Richmond has set it up perfectly. I think Dusty is the last of the full forwards — or the first of the full forwards, whichever way you want to look at it,” he said on AFL 360.
Round 5Brought to you by sportsbet

King showed vision that not only revealed how tough Martin is to play on, but how he was actually staying at home in the forward 50.

In one scenario, the ball was in Richmond’s defensive 50 and Martin was 40 metres out from goal. In another, he was 35 metres out during a Tigers kick-in.

So when he really was left with just one defender, there was simply no chance he could be stopped.

“You cannot make contact with this guy, because he’s so strong. You’ve got to sit off him, you’ve got to come hard and come late — you do not wrestle,” King said.

“This is the beauty of the gun midfielders going deep. Plenty of energy, plenty of power, and when the ball’s there to be won, they know how to do it.”

And King was full of praise for Richmond coach Damien Hardwick for playing Martin in this way.

“I think it’s fantastic to see Damien Hardwick say, ‘you are our best option at deep forward. Play deep forward. Don’t come up to the back of the defensive grid, don’t get involved in that’,” he said.

“And I hope it takes hold. That’s where Jake Stringer should be. That’s where Paddy McCartin should be. Tomahawk, all those guys.

“Sometimes you’ve got to sacrifice one player out the back — just see what the competition’s doing. I think Damien Hardwick is changing the competition in a whole host of ways, and it’s challenging them to be aware.

“I don’t see any other clubs doing this. Dusty’s a gun, but to kick six goals is the reward of what Damien’s put out there.”

As for what the Tigers’ next opponent Melbourne could do, King suggested Sam Frost (based on his speed) or Michael Hibberd as Martin’s opponent.

“But you can’t snooze on him. You can’t think he’s playing a different position,” he said.

Still got a heap of it but at times Dusty didn't seem to be moving as well as usual (although he was moving better by the last qtr). I wonder if he was a bit sore or copped a knock early in the game?

I think the pies pressure was terrific today. Dusty didn’t have the same liberty as normal so a lot of his kicks were rushed and his disposal efficiency was way down.
