It reminds me of that film space jam. Where like for he had his powers stolen by aliens? But I guess he got them back via Michael Jordan. Or those pumas

Dusty fends off the critics with a return to his 2017 best

THE TALKING point after Dustin Martin's 30-disposal outing in round one was how young Blue Zac Fisher – not known for his strength – had brought him down in a tackle.

Fisher had pre-emptively slapped Martin's hand to blunt the superstar Tiger's famed fend-off, then wrapped him up.

Everything to do with Martin is hyper-analysed.

The source of the tactic was supposedly Eagle Elliot Yeo, who successfully implemented it against Richmond in round nine last year.

That fuss soon faded into the background as stoppers Levi Greenwood and Matt de Boer kept Martin to consecutive sub-20-possession tallies.

The 2017 Brownlow and Norm Smith medallist was officially in a very public form slump – and had a week to ponder it after being banned for an undisciplined elbow to Giant Adam Kennedy's head.

Martin's 2018 campaign, still stellar by everyday AFL players' standards, was similarly closely scrutinised for his inability to match his other-worldly season a year earlier.

There have been glimpses of what he can do this year, but there was collective glee as the one-man wrecking ball exploded out of the blocks on Sunday afternoon.

Virtually impossible to miss amid Martin's staggering 13-disposal opening quarter were a pair of trademark stiff-arms, one of them on lightweight Hawk Jack Scrimshaw, who had no answer.

The question must be asked: is the fend-off Dusty's firestarter, the action that illustrates he is 'on'?

The early two on Sunday preceded Martin's gut-busting run forward, coinciding with the Tigers winning the ball at half-back, then launching a blistering scoring chain that ended in his arms.

Eight of those 13 touches to quarter-time were contested and he won four of Richmond's 12 clearances to that stage.

Martin spent large portions of the second term deep in attack, opposed to Shaun Burgoyne and Ben Stratton.

He uncharacteristically missed a close-range snap – the only blot on his copybook – but moments later he burst through two rivals at the other end to dish off a handball and put a teammate in the clear.

Then, of course, soon after he elevated to outmark Liam Shiels inside 50, with another Hawk nearby, and slam a checkside kick through the uprights.

The cries came thick and fast on social media. This is the 2017 Dusty – the season he can't escape.

Nineteen possessions at half-time became 37 by the final siren, including 17 contested, to go with 10 clearances (six from the centre), nine score involvements, 568 metres gained, four inside 50s and even three tackles.

Some of the early-season critics will have taken notice of that last one.

Whether this was Martin of 2017 or not, it was certainly his finest solo display this year and it coincided with an important Richmond triumph that has it on the brink of the top four.

In what has been an at-times difficult season for Martin and his injury-depleted Tigers, there's little to be too concerned about.

Dustin Martin switches back to Puma boots after high-profile dumping

Sporting News
20 May 2019

Unless you watched Richmond's Sunday afternoon clash with Hawthorn on mute, you wouldn't have been able to avoid the commentators' chat about Dustin Martin's boots.

The Tigers star found himself back in Puma boots after trialling out a few different manufacturers over the past few weeks.

Every time Dusty got near the footy, we heard about his search for the perfect pair of boots.

Plenty of viewers grew tired of it, while others thought there might have been more at play.

Dusty had 19 and kicked 2 in a half in his old trusty Puma boots, surely if ya puma ya just keep making the old ones for him $$$$ , and @AFL the fans have had enough of this rubbish umpiring this year fix it. #AFLTigersHawks
    - shaun comerford (@shaun_como3) May 19, 2019

Some fans floated a conspiracy, suggesting that Martin's chopping and changing was all part of a campaign from the boot manufacturer.

Dusty getting 500k to rock PUMAs is insane.
Genius by their PR team to come up with the plan for him to "leave" them for a few weeks #AFLTigersHawks
    - Luke (@Marruso89) May 19, 2019

We reckon they might be giving the marketing team at Puma too much credit.

So what is the story with Dusty's footwear?

The Richmond superstar was signed to Puma on a deal worth around $500,000 per year.

Despite having three years left to run on that contract, the midfielder ditched his wheels at the end of round three, wearing Nike boots for two rounds and then trying out Adidas for a couple of weeks.

Back in his trademark hi-vis yellow and blues Pumas on Sunday, the commentators suggested they may have been an older model.

Whatever the case, the change was worked, with Martin looking back to his best with two goals in a dominant first half.

Dusty’s season ‘nothing short of sensational’: Dimma

LAUREN WOOD,
Herald Sun
23 May 2019

Dustin Martin has found his voice.

And it’s resulted in the Brownlow medallist leaving even his coach amazed.

Damien Hardwick said he considered the suggestion that Dustin Martin had not had his trademark spark this season to be “unfair” and said the superstar Tiger had taken his game to a new level in the face of the team’s injury woes.

“With the void that’s probably in our leadership group or that has left our leadership group at the moment (with Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt all out) … I’ve never seen a guy step up as much as he did,” Hardwick said.

“If you had said to me 10 years ago … that he’d be doing the things that he’s doing now, I’d be
“We’ve asked him to play different roles at different stages to help us get through this period that’s been tough. Sometimes it’s been more of a role that’s been more beneficial to the team than Dustin. He’ll put his hand up and play that every time. Superstars set an incredibly high standard. We’re very quick to jump on those guys, and it’s understandable — they’re in the limelight.

“We’re just happy he’s playing his role and we’re winning.”

Hardwick said that Martin, 27, had “grown as a player this year” despite the numbers.

“His stats mightn’t say that he is, but he’s doing things that he’s never previously done for this footy club, whether it’s making 2 v 1s or going outside the stoppage. Those are things that make a great player. That’s how he’s grown,” Hardwick said.

“He’s just grown more vocal. It’s amazing … it happens to all of us at some stage. We have to get a really good understanding of who we are and what we do, so it’s to fulfil that role.
Martin has been “sensational” for Richmond, his coach says. Picture: Michael Klein.

“It’s just been so impressive to see how far he’s come — not only this year, but years previous as well. That’s the great thing footy clubs do — they nurture. Dustin’s been nothing short of sensational for our footy club … we couldn’t ask for a better icon to be at our footy club, really.”

Watched the replay last night and thought it was interesting how he was calling for the other players to get around Lynch when he kicked that goal in the 3rd I think

Internally he may be growing as a leader as I wouldn't normally see dusty doing things like that

The guy is nothing short of a champion. If I learned anything from 2016 when Cotchin was under the pump and had pressure to step down as captain (I’m willing to admit that I jumped on that train and thought Riewoldt should captain and feel bad for that) is that champions will always rise up. Martin is a once in a generation player and whether he’s getting triple teamed to free up other players or smashing teams single handedly he will always bring something to the table

Also from Robbo's "likes" column:

The no-tag Bombers let Dustin Martin loose and he didn’t disappoint. In his past six games against Essendon, he has had 35, 28, 26, 30, 38 and 43 disposals.

Secret behind Dusty’s form turnaround

Kate Salemme,
Herald Sun
May 30, 2019

Dustin Martin has recaptured the form that saw him become the AFL’s best player in 2017 over the past two weeks as Richmond has roared back in premiership calculations.

So what’s the secret behind his form turnaround?

What’s old is new again — Martin has switched back to his old Puma EvoPower boots, the boots that he won the Brownlow Medal, North Smith Medal and premiership in two years ago, after short stints in Nike and adidas.

The Richmond superstar famously split with sponsor Puma in April, just one year into a new four-year deal with the company.

He’s been on the lookout for new boots ever since, trialling Nike’s Phantom VNM Elite boots before giving adidas’s Copa 19.1 a crack.

But neither of those boots has satisfied the 27-year-old, with Martin wearing his old Pumas in Rounds 9 and 10.

His last two weeks have seen him return to his dynamic best, gathering 37 disposals, six marks and two goals in the win over Hawthorn before backing it up against Essendon with 35 disposals and seven marks.

Martin received the maximum 10 votes from the coaches in the AFLCA Champion Player of the Year award in the win over the Hawks in Round 9, while he polled seven votes in Dreamtime at the ‘G.

Is there more to this boot superstition than we thought?

Martin had previously gathered 30 disposals just once this season — in Round 1 — while he had polled votes from the coaches just twice — nine votes in Round 5 and one vote in Round 1.

Since he returned to the trusty Puma EvoPowers, Martin has averaged 36 disposals, compared to just 21.9 in Rounds 1-8 and is averaging a massive 654 metres gained — over 300m more than his 342m average to start the year.

The superstar has also recaptured his spark at the contest, averaging nine clearances and 13.5 contested possessions for game.

The Herald Sun reported in April Martin’s relationship with Puma hit a snag when the company no longer made available the EvoPower boots.

Puma said in a statement it had been “working closely with Martin through a transition period to the new style of Puma boot but through this process it has been agreed upon by both parties to end the relationship”.

A cheeky sleepwear commercial featuring Richmond superstar Dustin Martin waking up next to a Victoria’s Secret bombshell has been investigated after an outcry that it was too sexy and too suggestive.
