He’s probably tired of the heresay of “HES GOING TO JOIN BUDDY” when in Sydney so going to GC would hopefully mean less poo stirring from the media

Dustin Martin has been seen running laps at Punt Road, with the Tigers hoping the star midfielder can reclaim his place at the top of the league’s pecking order.

Martin managed only nine games through injury and a leave of absence to deal with the death of his father. He averaged less than 19 touches per game.

He returned for the elimination final, having not played since round 16, but the decision to select him was criticised after coach Damien Hardwick declared before the game that the triple Norm Smith medallist was only “80 per cent fit”. He had only 15 possessions and a goal in the two-point loss to the Lions.

Beware of the Tiger King: Richmond expecting Dusty response

The Tigers are hoping to see Dustin Martin bounce back to his best in 2023

By AAP
5 December 2022

RICHMOND boss Brendon Gale expects to see superstar Dustin Martin back at his brilliant best next year as the Tigers seek to atone for an "uncharacteristic" campaign.

Martin managed just nine games last season as an inconsistent Richmond clawed its way into the finals, only to be eliminated in week one.

The Tigers have loaded up again for 2023, with the acquisition of boom recruits Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper laying bare their premiership ambition.

And a fit-again Martin is crucial to the plan.

The 31-year-old joined his teammates for pre-season training at Punt Road on Monday, eager to build a strong platform over summer.

"He's an impeccably well prepared athlete," Richmond CEO Gale said.

"A lot of people probably wouldn't get that impression, but he is. He's really finely tuned and he's really, really proud.

"He's played at a very, very high level for a long time and that's not going to continue forever, but he's still got a very, very important role to play at our football club.

"He's well supported and we expect him to respond this year."

Martin has been through a turbulent 18 months on and off the field.

His father Shane died last December and the superstar went through a lengthy rehabilitation from a lacerated kidney, which ended his 2021 season early.

Martin spent six weeks' personal leave away from Richmond early last season and missed another seven games while sidelined by hamstring injuries at the end of the home and away campaign.

Post-season speculation the Tigers' talisman would leave the club with two years left on his contract was ultimately put to bed.

"He had a really tough year, coming back from a fairly significant injury to start with, and the tragic loss of his father," Gale said.

"He's been training pretty hard, he's been away up north, and he's been doing a fair bit of boxing away from the club.

"He's a proud athlete and he's a proud man and he'll look forward to getting back in the swing of things, that's for sure."

Looks to have added back some of the muscle he lost after his kidney injury.

Can someone ask Sam McClure if Dusty is still going to Sydney :snidegrin.

Seriously though, it's great seeing Dusty happy and with a smile on his face  :).

‘Funny and thoughtful’: The Dusty I know

Outgoing Richmond president Peggy O’Neal got to know Dustin Martin in ways not many people have, and says he has a secret, nature-loving side.

Certain individuals in the media have certainly gone very quiet since Dusty has returned to full preseason training looking happy in himself and physically in good nick. Their ignorance of the grieving process over the past 12 months and how long it takes to deal with on top of coming back from serious injury/surgery was truly pathetic.

The thing about this i simply don't get is the main perpetrator has a pinned tweet which talks about him going through the same thing Dusty did over the past yr. It actually makes it much worse than it already is.

Saw that. Narcissistic behaviour to only see your own pain while showing no empathy whatsoever towards others going through similar pain (especially that's more recent for that person and still raw). Seems producing attention-seeking click-bait is more important for some in the media than doing the right thing and leaving another person alone be to grieve.

100% I should add, i tweeted the * asking why he didn't show some kind of sympathy etc, he ignored it & continued on with it.

Who are we talking about?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.
