The Herald-Sun's New Year resolutions for Dusty ...I WILL BE NICER TO THE UMPIRESThe next worst offender [after Mumford] was Richmond midfield star Dustin Martin, who gave away 46 free kicks for the year.
I WILL CUT BACK MY CLANGERSFew things frustrate coaches more than clangers. Whether it is missing an open target inside 50, handballing directly to the opposition or dropping an easy mark, more often than not a clanger will result in a score the other way.
So who needs to be a little bit cleaner with the football in 2017?
Dustin Martin gets another mention here. Dusty is a ball-winning machine and roared into Brownlow Medal contention last season. But the midfielder can also cough it up.
Dusty committed a league-high 113 clangers in 2016. He attempts harder kicks than most players but it’s a worry that his toughest days came against the elite teams in the league; Martin had nine clangers against the Western Bulldogs in Round 16 and another nine against Geelong in Round 21. His 18 ineffective kicks in Round 17 against Essendon is the highest tally ever.
Martin was one of only four players to break the triple-figure clanger barrier for the season.
