‘No one does that’: Ridiculous Dustin Martin kick that left Fox Footy commentators in awe

Nick Riewoldt and Garry Lyon have played in – and watched – a lot of footy matches over the years. But when Dustin Martin pulled off such a ridiculous kick like he did against Brisbane, the Fox Footy duo were left collectively breathless.

The Richmond superstar produced arguably another best-on-ground performance on Tuesday night, finishing with 24 disposals, four clearances and nine inside 50s.

And the best of those inside 50 entries, which came during the dying stages of the third term, proved Martin is back to his menacing best.

Sprinting along the left wing boundary line with a Lions opponent closing, Martin had to dispose of the ball promptly.

The natural tendency would’ve been to use his non-preferred left foot or simply bomb the ball forward. Instead, Martin calmly assessed his options and used the outside of his right boot to pull off a superb drop punt pass to Jack Higgins inside 50.

Considering the AFL speed and intensity, the degree of difficulty was very high. Yet one of the game’s best players pulled it off.

“You can talk about footy all you like and have your debates and your arguments, but no one does that. No one does that like Dusty,” Lyon told Fox Footy.

“You might get (Bulldog) Caleb Daniel to do it a little bit and go 15m, but that’s what separates him.

“Every time Dustin gets it, you’re a legitimate scoring chance.”

Nick Riewoldt said it’s still “amazing just to be able to sit down and watch him play a full game of footy”.

“You still have moments where it just takes your breath away. That kick on the outside of the foot – he just does stuff other players can’t do,” Riewoldt told Fox Footy.

As part of his transformation into one of the great players of the modern era, Martin has become a “maximum damage” player, according to Riewoldt.

It was only four years ago that Martin was averaging 31.1 disposals a game yet was widely criticised for quantity over quality. In 2020, Martin is all quality.

Of Martin’s 24 disposals against Brisbane, 10 of them led to scores. He’s ranked in the top 10 for score involvements per game.
Despite averaging just 20.5 disposals per outing in 2020, the 29-year-old’s influence on matches has seemingly never been greater, according to Lyon.

“There’s no one quite like Dustin Martin in the competition. We’re not telling anyone anything they don’t know, but we got further evidence of it (against Brisbane),” Lyon said.

“When he gets it, his ability to go to different parts of the ground is almost unsurpassed and to go to it in a manner that is almost always to the benefit of Richmond.

“Other players are limited in their ability to kick distance or length or power. But he has got the lot, this bloke.”

Martin also had a game-high and personal season-best 604m gained against Brisbane after gaining 430 and 506m in his previous two outings against the Bulldogs and Giants respectively.

The Brownlow Medallist is also ranked second in the league for average inside 50s per match (4.9).

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick lauded Martin’s ability to have a greater impact on games while having less disposals than previous seasons.

“That’s what good players do,” Hardwick told reporters post-game.

“Metres gained is really important to us in the way he plays. He just puts players in space – that’s what the really great players do and I thought he did that pretty well (on Tuesday night).

“We probably could have used a little bit of his class across the arc at various stages a little bit more. But once again, his last month has been pretty good from a form point of view.”

Martin’s output has undoubtedly increased over his past four games, booting seven goals and averaging 22.3 disposals, 10.8 contested possessions, 7.3 inside 50s, 4.8 clearances, 8.3 score involvements and 125.8 Champion Data Ranking points.

“I think his movement we’ve seen in the last fortnight has been a key around stoppages,” triple premiership player Jonathan Brown told Fox Footy.

“Clearly he was hampered early in the year, because his movement and his want to take the hits and movement around the stoppage (in recent games) – that tells me a healthy player.”

Dustin Martin has "put to bed" debate about the best player in the game

SEN
5 August 2020

Dustin Martin has had an incredible month of football, ending any arguments against him being the best player in the game, according to Garry Lyon.

The star midfielder was best on ground again in Richmond’s 41-point win over Brisbane on Tuesday night.

He was equally impressive in clashes with the Western Bulldogs and GWS and may have just picked up eight or nine Brownlow votes in three weeks.

Other players have been crowned as having surpassed Martin this year, with Lachie Neale the clear Brownlow favourite and Shane Crawford suggesting Christian Petracca is the number one player in the game.

"I just think his impact on the game has been outstanding. I think he's the new bull, he's gone past Dustin Martin," Crawford told Channel Nine.

"I know I might be jumping the gun, but this year so far what he's produced is some absolute first-class footy and the way he's going, for me at the moment, he is my first pick if I'm putting a team together."

Lyon, who disagreed with Crawford’s comments at the time, believes Martin has shut the book on any debate.

“Dustin Martin just put it to bed. I don’t think anyone was ever arguing (that he wasn’t the number one player in the game),” he told SEN Breakfast.

“Lachie Neale may have had a better year, but Dustin Martin is closing very, very quickly. He was sublime.”

Some Brownlow predictors have Neale on up to 19 votes to this point in the season, while Martin is expected to be on around 10.

Garry Lyon slams double standards after Dustin Martin decision

news.com.au
12 August 2020

An angry Garry Lyon has called out the AFL for double standards by allowing an ugly part of the game to fester for too long.

Melbourne legend Garry Lyon has blasted the AFL for “condoning” punching instead of stamping it out after Dustin Martin was only fined for striking.

The Richmond superstar can accept a $1750 fine with an early guilty plea for hitting Port Adelaide’s Tom Rockliff during the Power’s 13.15 (93) to 11.6 (72) win over the Tigers on Monday night — his third charge for such an offence in two seasons.
Last month the 2017 Brownlow Medallist copped a $1000 fine for striking North Melbourne’s Luke McDonald.

Lyon believes by fining Martin rather than suspending him, the AFL is sending a message it doesn’t take punching seriously.
“We’ve been told about this punching. These come into vogue and then they go out of vogue,” Lyon said during Tuesday night’s episode of Fox Footy’s On The Couch.

“Dustin gives a little right (hand) to the neck (of Rockliff), so that’s a fine for Dustin. It’s the second fine for striking after this punch to the guts (on McDonald).

“The AFL, if you’re watching: You are condoning punching to the head and punching to the guts.

“So don’t tell us in any other way, because you’re not taking a stand and you’re not stamping out punching to the head. You are kidding yourself and don’t tell us any anything else either.”

The AFL said it would be cracking down on punching after Eagle Andrew Gaff’s sickening strike on Fremantle’s Andrew Brayshaw in 2018 that knocked the youngster’s teeth out and broke his jaw.

But Lyon accused the league of double standards and failing to walk the walk.

“Don’t ever come back to us and tell us you’re taking striking seriously again as they did about a year or two ago,” he added on SEN Breakfast.

“‘Oh, we want to stamp out striking, it’s a bad look for the game, it sends a really bad message’. That is disingenuous rot from the AFL.

“So, Dusty went for the third time in two years for striking on the weekend. Just punched (Rockliff) in the throat — and OK it wasn’t that hard, but is that what you want?

“If that was his first time then I can accept ‘not enough force’, but it’s the third time in two years for striking and he hasn’t missed a game.

“I’m not going to go on about it, but don’t ever come back and say, ‘Oh the look of the game is important to us and we want to stamp out striking’ because that is just rot. Unmitigated rot.”

They also singled out Rioli for laying down like he was badly hurt after getting hit in a contest but then quickly jumping to his feet when the ball came back into his area....media really ramping up the Richmond hate since we smashed their beloved Bears..... :shh

A lazy 30 possies (17 contested), 7 clearances (5 out of the centre), 9 inside 50s, 9 score involvements, a game high 651 metres gained and a goal from Dusty. Just another day at the office ;D.

The only negative was a disposals efficiency of 53.3%.

Richmond’s 27-point win over West Coast was notable for many reasons, but one stood out to Nick Riewoldt and Jonathan Brown above the rest.

The normally unperturbed Dustin Martin was visibly animated immediately after the final siren and later in the rooms, something rarely seen from him in the aftermath of a home-and-away match.

On Fox Footy’s post-game coverage, Riewoldt and Brown said the vision spoke volumes of where Richmond are at as a side.

“We quite often think of Dustin Martin as the cool cat, maybe he just rolls out and plays, but I think that’s selling him short,” Riewoldt said.

“When you saw the siren go and the emotion, a clench of the fist, real determination, a few choice swear words, pump the fist a few times, you thought OK he’s set himself for this one, the rest of the group had set themselves.

“It was almost like ‘these guys are contenders, this is our throne, they think they’re a chance to take it away from us, lets flex our muscles a bit and show them who’s boss.’”

Brown said Martin’s response, following a game where he had two goals, six tackles and 17 disposals, signified this was a “line in the sand” game for the reigning premiers, led by the best player in the competition.

“I think he personified Richmond right from the get go,” he said.

“We know Dusty does the brilliant things and he overwhelms teams with his power, but when he’s leading the charge with his pressure and his energy around the contest and leading the hunt, that was a worrying sign for the Eagles early in the game.”

Riewoldt lauded Martin for “exploding in and around the packs”, declaring “that’s when you get a sense Richmond mean business, when everyone including the best player in the competition is dialling into that style of play.”

How good is Dusty!

He is so good we barely even talk about it anymore. We have just come to expect it and we get it.

He is a champion, and is one of the greatest players of all time.

We have been blessed.

Chop stick gate was a long time ago.

KB called for his head at the time IIRC.

We used to read the news with dreaded anticipation every day.

Dusty is an amazing player and role model.

What a story..... and the excitement continues.!!!

That banana from the boundary in a nutshell summed up his game. When things were tight, that goal pretty much demoralised west coast and they never really came back from there.
