Chaplin was near woeful yesterday

I think it was only once I saw him taking the game on with intent when he had the ball in his hands.

The rest of his efforts were limited to pedestrian like disposals and sedentary attempts at the contest.

imo Astburys role as a defender should be to play on and stop the taller gorillas and the resting ruckmen. he needs more size and strength and aggression to perform this role. his lack of pace is a big concern.

imo we still lack a quality lock down full back like mcpharlin .we need to keep looking until we find one. imo we lack the numbers in defensive talls.

grimes imo is too small to play kp. he has good height but size is a real issue.
his role should be as a third man up type who gives run off hb.his strength is reading the ball in the air and making a spoil. He really needs to  find enough ball and provide run and rebound to compliment his spoiling ability.if he cant add some strings to his bow  i dont see a long term spot for him. it would be a huge bonus if dylan can perform this role.it would allow us to play a very tall backline.

kamdyn mcintosh should be developed in a grant birchall role, good height, has  run and skills. he can also play accountable footy hes decent in the air in fact hes good in the air.

looking at the players we have next yr id like to see something like this. id like us to get in a player like james frawley if possible.

b/ morris - chaplin - grimes
hb/ mcintosh - rance/astbury - dea/vlaustin/ellis..
that includes realistically all of our tall defenders. it includes all 3 kpds chaplin, rance, and astbury and there are issues with all three.

Feeling fitter than ever, young Richmond defender David Astbury is intent on putting his challenging injury run behind him, and cementing a spot in the Tigers’ team.

Cmon Smokey....put their weight as well. :o

Micheal and Leppitsch were real "gorilla keepers".....not sure you can say that about our trio.

Neither of them were 'gorillas' when they were young - Michael in fact was one of the skinniest guys going around when he was in his early 20's - in fact he weighed 68 kgs when he was drafted and 85kgs when he went to Brisbane in 2001 at 24 years of age.  Both only grew bulk in their later years, as do most players.  And I was only responding to the comments about needing 195+cm to play at fullback, citing Michael and Leppitsch as examples.  As a comparison:

Moore is 26 and weighs 84kg
McGuane is 23 and weighs 86kg
Thursfield is 24 and weighs 85kg

too light

i bet dustin weighs that much and is only 19

Did you think Michael was too light when he went to Brisbane and played fullback in a winning grand final side at 24 years of age?
was just having a peruse thru this thread and came across this.
mal michael weighed 103kg at the start of the 2003 season and he held down f/b in the 2002 g/f and he was huge. reckon someones got their figures wrong somewhere.

David Astbury in focus
richmondfc.com.au
October 30, 2013

Tim Clarke says:  “When Dave was in the VFL, he played a key defensive role for us, with the odd time moving to shut down a smaller opponent.

That was for his development . . . to prove to the senior coaching staff that he could match up on smaller opposition players.

Over the pre-season, Dave will be working on his footwork, defensive positioning and offensive decision-making/movement, to take his game to the next level.”

Look at him when he kicks, he actually looks at the ball hitting his boot and not his target..

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.
