I think he has made Chaplin's position almost redundant. Been excellent.
disagree astbury has a role to do that has nothing to do with chaplin.

You miss the point. Astbury is now doing the role on the gorillas Rance was last year which moves Rance into a role more suited to that of what Chaplin has been doing. Might be near time to give young McIntosh a chance in that third tall role..
mate i dont miss anything.
rance has never ever done a good job on the big key forwards.  he was basically loose man in defence on sunday third tall is his go he is very ordinary in 1v 1 situations imo.
mcintosh is a tall running player think andrew mackie when you think of a like for like. so basically a flanker with the added bonus of height and accountability if needed.  hes quick enough with a great motor and good disposal skills.
is grant birchall a third tall or a tall hbf.  will schofield at the eagles is a tall running player yep in recent times hes been asked to play third tall and kpp at times. thats mcintosh.

letys just say  ben rutten is on our list for the purpose of showing what i think would be  the ideal set up in defense.

morris - rutten - rance
vlastuin - astbury - mcintosh if he makes the grade,

Never beaten big forward?

John brown
Franklin
N riewokdt
Cameron

Pls
I think he's got you there claw. I'd call that a TKO! :lol

I know it's just an example but no team in history could have Rutten and Astbury in the same side. Both give absolutely nothing when it comes to rebound. And Out of those two Rutten  gives more.
Mate, you are flat out wrong about Rance too, and you have been since day one. You are just not man enough to admit it.
I don't give two hoots if you say he is a good loose man or third back, the facts are he is one of the best backman  going round. Pull your head out of your arse and stop trying to justify, you were wrong about him. Everyone has an opinion and everyone gets one wrong occasionally but most can say happily,  I was wrong. You refuse too which makes me want to fly to Perth and knock you out.  :thumbsup We are lucky to have this kid, he is a bloody star.

Was going to say the same thing but you beat me to the punch. You simply cannot play 2 mack truck type defenders in the same team, would get crucified.. besides Rance is more than capable of playing on a second fwd.

Astbury has been a real find this year.  Keep hearing how we are missing xyz players and that's why the club is performing so badly.  But internally, having someone like Astbury performing in the one on ones has been a real positive.  That's something we were missing last year.

Makes the Chaplin trade fairly questionable.  How many recycled players have we brought in that are taking or have taken the positions of better young players?  Too many would be my estimate.  What would the list look like now if we had promoted within?

Astbury's knee blow
The Tigers' defensive unit is set to be further impacted, following the left knee injury to David Astbury. The much-improved backman went down clutching his left knee, after being side-stepped by Jack Viney late in the third quarter. The movement instantly sparked fears of a possible ACL tear, but those fears were somewhat allayed. Initial indications were that Astbury had instead dislocated his knee cap, an injury he has sustained in the past.

I'd say he's realistically gone for the season. At best a 8 to 10 week injury.  Not sure where BJ got the 3 week info from.

I'd say he got it from his ever reliable mail.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Emotional Hardwick laments 'big loss' of Astbury
Jennifer Phelan

ANOTHER knee injury to luckless Richmond defender David Astbury was enough to move coach Damien Hardwick to the brink of tears after the Tigers' 17-point loss to Melbourne on Saturday.

It was an emotional day for the Tigers, following the passing of club great Tommy Hafey on Monday and the pre-game tribute that celebrated his life.

Hardwick struggled to find words to explain the unexpected loss and just what had changed for the Tigers in the past 12 months.

But it was talking about Astbury, who was having his best season since being drafted in 2009, and his suspected dislocated right kneecap that saw the tough ex-defender choke up.

"You only have to see what it means to the kid - to see tears in his eyes at three-quarter time," Hardwick said.

"He knows what he's done and unfortunately he's going to be a big loss for us.

"We're not exactly sure of the extent."

The injury happened in red time in the third quarter when Astbury went to change direction when he tried to tackle Jack Viney in the Demons' attacking arc.

His left leg twisted and collapsed beneath him as Viney went on to kick a goal.

He appears to have suffered the same injury he sustained to his right knee in round 12, 2011 – a patella dislocation with medial ligament damage.

He needed two operations after that injury and missed nearly 12 months, not playing seniors again until round 22, 2012.

The brave backman joined his teammates at three-quarter time on the field, aided by crutches and with a bag on ice on his knee.

Just two weeks after regaining key defender and Astbury's good friend Alex Rance, the Tigers will again have to reshuffle their back six to cover the loss.

A shattered Hardwick acknowledged how influential Astbury had been this season after finally being able to put together a full pre-season.

"It's a real shame, he's been a very good player for us," he said.

"He's been one of the shining lights this year. He's kept a lot of good players goalless.

"To lose him in a similar manner to what he's done previously is really disappointing."
