Thought he was ok. Can someone who was at the game comment on whether he loses his man sometimes? Twice Casboult was all on his own in the forward 50. Might have been a case of poor zoning/ team defence.

Was OK. I am not a fan but thought he was ok.

But yes lost his opponent a number times but also his decisions to zone off at times were poor. Times he didn't he should have. Times he did he shouldn't have

Also, showed a giant he is slow in making decisions and moving the ball

I was at the game with a couple of mates on Thursday night and one is a bit of a wrap for Dave and every time he lost his man I'd nudge my mate and say "is that your man again?"
Fair to say my mate's side was a bit sore after the game.
But Dave also did some good stuff too and I got a few nudges myself.
While he is fit, play him and let's just see if he can improve. He could be important against teams with a Casboult or Cloke in them but should be left out of the side if he doesn't have a match up.

I also think the same about Morris, he should be played against sides with really dangerous small forwards like Adelaide and Freeo as he is by far our best stopper on these sorts of guys.
Dimma needs to not be afraid to drop or bring guys in for different sides and needs.

The thing that really stood out for me the other night is nothing really had changed with our game plan/style or even our set ups. All our forwards still all gather at the 50m arch at a goal or start of a quarter which frustrates the hell out of me. No other side I have watched does this. Spread them out FFS! Get some isolation!!

There was good and bad in his game, took a couple of telling intercept marks but also got caught ball watching and lost his man in traffic. Happy to give him the benefit of the doubt at this stage as it's his first senior game in a while and hope he improves as he gets more games under the belt

I think TM and BT make good points.
I wonder why the big Assberry doesn't play forward?
He's a much better one on one mark that Ty or Big Benny.
I think the way our talls play in the forward line hurts our i50 disposal - we tend to bomb it in and Jack/Ty/Big Ben aren't naturally good at one n one contested marking.
Reckon the big Assberry could give us something there.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Just to play Devils advocate...

IF IT AIN'T BROKE , WHY FIX IT ?

Last year Richmond had the 3rd best defence in the competition. Sure there are some individuals with limited capabilities but as a unit the backline was very effective.

The backline on Thursday lacked the same "chemistry" and looked incredibly suspect at times.

I think our chances of beating Collingwood are improved if Chaplin and Batchelor return to the backline.

I don't know where that leaves Astbury.

@Big Tone - the huddle on the F50 arc you pointed out is something I think is pretty clever actually!  The fact that no other side does it doesn't make it a poor set up, if anything it makes us unique.  Its the best way to combat the zone defence epidemic going on in the league.  Gathering our forwards in a huddle also gathers up all the would-be 'zoners' which breaks up their defensive structure & opens up the whole F50.  If we gain a centre break the huddle can split & offer up a number of options with each lead going into clear space instead of running into 'zoners'.
Our iffy execution of the plan is one thing we can talk about, it all falls down if we don't get a clean hit out & clear possession in the middle (which comes back to our rucks effectiveness), but the huddle plan itself has merit IMO.
