THE recent Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts were the last with the Power for the club’s National Recruiting Manager Blair Hartley.

Hartley, 30, will step down from the position next month to take up a different role at Richmond. The Melbourne-based Hartley was with the Power for five years.

Hartley says it’s been a tough decision.

“This has been a tough call for me and one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” said Hartley.

“I’m very grateful for all the opportunities Port Adelaide has given me.

“I’ve learned so much and worked with so many great people, but it’s time for me to step back from the travel and take the next step in my career path.

“I’ve had a fantastic relationship with Mark Williams, Peter Rohde and all the coaching staff, as well as with my right-hand man Geoff Parker. They have been a joy to work with.”

Port Adelaide Football Operations Manager Peter Rohde says Hartley has been a valuable part of the Port Adelaide Football Club since arriving from Essendon.

“Blair has been a terrific asset in his time at Port Adelaide, he’s overseen three very successful drafts for us and above all is a quality person,” Rohde said.

“The travel demands on Blair have been very time-consuming, and it’s quite understandable that he’s looking to spend less time travelling and more time in Melbourne.

“Although we’re disappointed that Blair is moving on, we wish him all the best with Richmond.”

Reported on Channel 9 News here, and on the Port Board that Blair will be joining Richmond as a Match Analyst.

Made a lot of great decisions here at Port, fingers crossed that continues for you guys.

I know we are all pretty devo he is gone.

You would think that Hardwick had a bit of inside knowledge on this guy, especially to be bringing him on as a match analyst rather than in recruiting.

Richmond has appointed Blair Hartley as its Opposition and List Analyst.

Hartley, 30, spent five years with Port Adelaide, the last three as the Power’s National Recruiting Manager, while based in Melbourne.  Previous to that, he worked with Essendon in opposition analysis.

He is highly regarded within the football industry and the Tigers are delighted to have secured his services.

“Blair is the final piece in the new structure of our football department,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron.

“He has worked in opposition analysis before, plus he’s been a national recruiting manager, so he has a sound feel for both sides and is well-equipped to handle this new role at the Club.

“Having someone of Blair’s calibre, as a full-time opposition and list analyst, will put us in a really good position to handle the changing landscape of talent acquisition from within other AFL clubs.

“He’ll be looking at talent acquisition from existing club lists, in conjunction with his role as opposition analyst.”

That seems a little strange to me. If a coaches contract is up after five years, i would think the fitness peoples contract shoud marry in with the coaches. It seems a logical way to work?? Or am i missing something??

Fitness staff are usually employed independently of the coaching group - that is, by the football dept (Football Manager responsibility) so they will come and go at different times to a coaching regime.  That's not to say the coach can't identify someone he wants at the club and the club chase that person if they see fit, or have some input into these employment decisions, but it prevents 'dynasties' of power and control from working against the best interests of the club.  Just like the recruiters etc are employed independently - they have a job to do for the club as a whole, taking into account the bigger or longer term picture - something we all know doesn't work with many coaches who have a very vested interest in the 'now'.

should have just sacked the lot of them and paid them out, our list is at a crucial stage where they need all the good advice they can get to physically mature a grow to the best of their ability. Our current staff have shown they have nfi and we will likely be treading water in terms of conditioning for another year

Not disagreeing but you must consider who was the driver for the level and type of conditioning last season - was it driven by the conditioning staff or were they merely following orders?  Maybe the coach(es) wanted a certain outcome that was not real clever in hindsight.  Just a possibility.
