Pretty important.

Probably now gives us a guarantee of either Atley or Gaff

I guess its a good thing. I'm not going to try and find it but I remember reading a post by someone on another site about a year ago going through all the players taken with "pick 6" over the years - and they all ended up being pretty average. At least I think it was pick 6 - I'm going to look pretty dumb otherwise. :D

Obviously I'd rather pick 6 than 8 - but it doesn't always mean much. It's one of those funny picks just after all the "elite" players get taken - but we should get a decent player.

Given GC has taken all the prime 17 year olds it's probably closer to pick 12 in real terms.

It was on big footy and from memory the poster conveniently left out a couple of picks, but it still wasn't a good record. It's just one of those anomalies that happen every now and then.

Brisbanes win is helpful to us in the 2nd round of the draft where even 1 or 2 spots can make a massive difference.

I rate Atley a little bit better than Gaff, both really good players.

Given what Hardwick said earlier in the year I'd say they will take the running player with the best skills, whomever that is.

you reckon 6 17y/o's would have gone top 12?

AFL Prospectus - Potential Top 25

Shaun Atley - 186cm, 81kg - Midfielder – Murray Bushrangers
Atley is a lively midfielder who is also comfortable playing down back. He represented Vic Country at the 2008 Under-16 Championships, playing three matches and averaging 17 disposals, four inside 50s and three clearances. In 2009 he played 11 matches for the Murray Bushrangers, averaging 20 disposals and an elite nine contested possessions per game which included four loose ball - gets per match – ranked seventh of the players to have played 5 or more games.

Andrew Gaff – 180cm, 75kg – Midfielder – Oakleigh Chargers
Following on from his impressive 2008 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships in which he averaged 20 disposals for Vic Metro, Gaff played 6 matches for Oakleigh in the TAC Cup in 2009 between school football and NAB AFL Under-18 Championship commitments and was one of the leading contributors. Playing in the midfield, he averaged 26 disposals, including 17 kicks per match, along with 11 contested possessions, 15 uncontested, and six inside 50’s. For Vic Metro his performances were also outstanding, averaging 25 disposals, 20 uncontested possessions and five inside 50’s per match from his four matches.

On figures alone Gaff looks the pick of the two.

I prefer Atley to Gaff! Seen them both, Atley has more potential development and is alot quicker.

Be interested to see there difference in the Draft Combine for:

Speed, Agility and Kicking.

All I'd bet that Atley has Gaff's measure but thats only from Championship form and the bases Atley is a State Rep in 100m hurdles.

Gaff remind me a bit of a defensive Angus Monfries, in the way he moves. Left footer, got alot of handball receives in D50. Bit like how Gibbs gets his possies.

Atley played midfield and got a a balanced amount of contested and uncontested ball. Good good speed and was generally more efficient than Gaff in my opinion.

Atley is bigger in height and size.

Gaff looks to have that footy smarts of knowing where to be to get the, where as Atley didn't display that as much.

Atley for mine, but would be happy with Gaff cause I think Atley will be taken by the Eagles.
Go Tigers!
