The AFL site is ranking the No.1 picks over the years from worst to best. Richard Lounder is named the worst.

24. Richard Lounder
Drafted: 1987
Recruited from: Central Districts (SANFL)
Club: Richmond
Games: 4

Career achievements
The Tigers had high hopes when they drafted man-mountain Richard Lounder with the first pick in what was just the second-ever national draft in 1987. But after a promising start to his VFL career, Lounder would play just three more matches to finish with a career total of four.

From Central Districts in South Australia, the ruckman stood an imposing 203cm and weighed 116kg. On debut against North Melbourne at the MCG, he spent much of his time forward and the Roos struggled to combat his sheer size. Lounder booted four goals and looked a player, but as he worked 40-hour weeks and struggled with homesickness, he wasn't able to produce his best.

Lounder returned to South Australia after just two seasons in Melbourne, and slowly drifted out of football.

23. Stephen Hooper (Geelong, 1990 Draft, 21 Games)
22. Jack Watts (Melbourne, 2008 Draft, 18* Games)

You would think the last three to five would be excluded.

Bit harsh on a KPF like Watts to be judged already

Jack Watts hasn't even played out 3 seasons - bit harsh in my mind. Should wait at least a couple more seasons until the footy world decide if he will every live up to his No 1 ranking. He's a lucky boy that Nick Nat hasn't come on as quickly as he appeared he would when he burst ont the scene or Melbourne would have  another Tambling on there hands.  :P

Banik 5th worst No.1 pick (AFL site)
« Reply #6 on: November 09, 2010, 10:45:58 PM »
Banik made the 5th worst.....

20. Anthony Banik
Drafted: 1989
Recruited from: Won Wron Woodside (VCFL)
Club: Richmond
Games: 49

Career achievements
Banik was just 17 years old when he ran onto Princes Park for Richmond in round three of the 1990 season.

Big things were expected of the Won Wron youngster, who had been an outstanding junior and Tiger officials believed would be a 10-year player. But despite a promising debut season, his AFL career ended after five years at Punt Road for 49 senior matches. The former No.1 draft pick was still just 21 years old when delisted.

Injury and illness did hamper his progress, but it's fair to say the half back flanker never really set the world on fire.

21. Tom Scully (Melbourne)
19. Alex McDonald (Hawthorn/Collingwood)

Min giosh, Scully as a poor draft choice ..... what a f'n peanut !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :banghead

Way to harsh on Scully and Watts. Scully showed some great signs this year. My only criticism of Watts in a future out-look view is he might be a confidence player. But besides that give him at least another couple of seasons and pre-seasons to build his body up.

Lounder is most famous for kicking 4 goals on debut while leaning against the goalpost  ;D.

We did get Wayne Campbell out of that 1989 draft but that's about it. We were broke (pre-SOS) so we could only afford country kids from Victoria because they came to the club cheap.
