Well he out polled most others on our playing list, so he can't be consistently that bad.

I'll let the results from last night do the talking.

Tells you a lot about our current list then doesn't it!!!

Who do you rate on our list? Rance?

Would you rate Rance if we played him in the ruck? Probably not.

So that about sums up your opinion on Batchelor.

WTF re you on about?

Are you telling me we have the side to win us a GF.? That's about as silly as your question.

I don't rate: Batchelor, Grigg, Chaplin and really that's about it. I think Conca, B Ellis and Griff have trade value.

WTF are you talking about Rance in the ruck for. If you mean that Batch is too small to play on the taller forwards then why the stuff does Hardwick play him on them and why does the RCGG always go on about how tall he plays when he bloody doesn't.

Additionally, if he is too short to compliment the backline against the taller forward lines in the comp what is that telling you????????

Haven't seen anybody talk him up as a tall defender. Just seen you trashing him for months on end. Most people think he is a serviceable player at the least, definitely much improved this year, and finishing 12th in the B&F (especially based on the new voting criteria) would support that.

My point is that your harshest criticism seems to be when Batch is costing us games because he's being played on blokes like Waite, conceding far too much height, weight and speed. So yeah, from that I gather you would be hating on players like Rance if he was stupidly played in the ruck when he has no right to be there.

Batch is a medium defender best used as a 3rd up/rebounding player. He plays this role well, did so consistently all year, and most people saw and appreciated that.

Batch was serviceable to decent this year. His 13th place finish in the B&F shows that. He wasn't to blame for the EF loss. If we hadn't been smashed in the midfield (minus 35 in contested possies) then our defence wouldn't have been under siege especially after half-time.  Gameplans may have become more sophisticated over time but footy hasn't changed as far as winning the midfield battle leads to winning the game. Our pathetic attack on the footy in the guts totally destroyed our ability to run and rebound and set up attacks off half-back. If you're going to play a Batchelor on someone like Waite then as coach you're banking on the midfield to stand up and do their job. If they are then defensively it makes delivery into North's forward line is slower and wider, enabling numbers to get back to support our defenders and eliminate isolated 1-on-1s. Then offensively, if the midfield is doing their job, the plan is mobile "third-tall" defenders like Batch can peel off and run forward (Waite is lazy defensively when things don't go his way). It's risk vs reward. However, we got smashed in the guts and we paid the price all over the park including Waite getting isolated 1-on-1s on Batch.

Imo he had an ordinary season we should be getting so much more out of who ever it is we play in the role.
13TH in the B&F Why are people hanging their hats on that.. He is one of 14 players who played more than 20 games and he came 13th in the b&f.
Why are there always excuses for the players. He must have had a good year he came 13th in the B&F, Not his fault he plays on talls. Oh the midfield didnt help out enough, ffs stop the excuses.

It has always been the case and will always remain the case he doesnt have the attributes to play tall and he doesnt have the attributes to play small. He may well have the odd good game which will happen if you play 23 games in the season.

He is 188cm and 88kg. he should never be playing against key forwards a simple thing like his physical attributes says this it is not hard to see. The one area Batchelor should have it all over these tall players is pace and run and this just is not the case.  He struggles to keep up with these types how the hell is he going to keep up with a quick nippy small.

People are kidding themselves if they think hes a good third up rebounding player. He just doesnt do enough of the key elements in this role.
He barely touches the ball most games how can you run and rebound if you dont have the ball. I would have thought an ave of 15 - 20 disposals a game is needed for the rebounding types. Also he doesnt often actually rebound the ball or run lines and get forward enough to deliver inside 50. All of these things he should be doing much more of.
For a third up type he is not doing enough in the air. 1% should be through the roof yet they are just ave. There are few contested marks and  When the ball hits the ground there is little run and few tackles.

YES  of course he has played some decent footy and he is one of few who will crack in but he will always struggle to be anything more than a reasonable player because he doesnt have the attributes to perform the role we ask of him.

I have long advocated we play McIntosh as that third up rebounding defender. He has height, pace, can run lines, has a good motor, lays crunching tackles, and gets his hands on the pill. He is no stranger to defense either he was a very good defender as a junior.Strong in the air and accountable. It may take a little while to get him up to speed as a defender but he is imo a far better option in the role than Batchelor.

One thing I disagree with is he does run lines out of defence and gets up around the forward 50 but he just doesn't get used. Actually has a pretty decent workrate. Now, why they don't use him could be an entirely different issue

Inside Football have judged past weak draft years by basing them on who came out of post-#30 picks. 2010 was one of these weak drafts.

Interestingly enough, Batch is one of only seven players picked up post-pick 30 in that draft that is classed as a 'successful' selection.

31. Jake Batchelor (75 games)
33. Jeremy Howe (100)
40. Luke Parker  (101)
41. Tom Liberatore (77) [F/S]
57. Alex Johnson (45)
66. Paul Puopolo (111)
76. Paul Seedsman (49)
