Wikileaks/Assange [merged]

Good - bad - indifferent - dangerous - we have a right to know?
What's your opinion?

I personally have a bet each way on good and but, but think they're treading on dangerous ground.

Their latest caper:

SPYING by the US on UN officials and sustained calls of Arab leaders to launch an attack on Iran are among the main revelations in the latest Wikileaks document release.
The US State Department has a damage limitation exercise underway after the release of some 250,000 cables which reveal secret diplomatic backroom plans and frank assessments of world leaders.

One of the most damaging is a directive issued in Hillary Clinton’s name to US diplomats, ordering forensic details collected on top UN officials, including the secretary-general, Ban Ki-Moon, seeking their passwords and other means of access to their private communications networks.

Another cable quotes a source as saying China’s top political leaders ordered the hacking attacks on Google’s network there, and that it was carried out by government IT experts along with what the New York Times calls "internet outlaws" who have been attacking the online systems of companies from America and other countries since 2002.

The documents also contain an allegation of "inappropriate behaviour" by a member of the British royal family.

Australia has not featured in the documents released so far, although Mrs Clinton raised the leak with Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd in a phone call last week.

Tensions with Iran are likely to run high this week, with the cables revealing leaders of other countries in the Middle East urging the US to launch an airstrike to debilitate the rogue nation’s nuclear program.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah repeatedly calls in one cable for the US to "cut the head off the snake" and stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

As was the case with two previous major document releases by Wikileaks, the website provided advance access to a number of media organisations including The New York Times and Britain’s Guardian newspaper ahead of their release, officially scheduled for 8.30am AEDT.

The New York Times reports that the "anticipated disclosure of the cables is already sending shudders through the diplomatic establishment, and could conceivably strain relations with some countries, influencing international affairs in ways that are impossible to predict".

The White House has condemned Wikileaks’ decision to release the files, calling it "dangerous and reckless action".

"By releasing stolen and classified documents, WikiLeaks has put at risk not only the cause of human rights but also the lives and work of these individuals," the White House said.

All of the above depending on what is being leaked. You wouldn't want any military plans leaked that put our soldiers lives at risk. Leaking what Arab leaders think of Iran is dangerous as the Iranian leader is up there with the North Koreans in the loopy stakes and he will use this as propaganda to remain in power :help.

will Arab leaders trust USA with as much now they know whatever they say can be leaked in the future which would possibly strength there enemies. example Iran's leader will use this as propaganda to remain in power and invest more in military and nuclear bombs as FNM has already pointed out.

I think what Wikileaks has done is tested some ideals that the American people proudly claim as their own. For example, what is the difference between Wikileaks receiving information from whistleblowers and the NY times receiving the same information? The attempt to charge Wikileaks with espionage, rather than identifying the whistleblowers really destroys the suggestion that American society is built on a freedom of the press.

The media think it's great.  Wikileaks exposes fodder for them to write about but with no responsibility.
Long after Julian has spent his 40 years in solitary confinement, they'll still be writing about Cablegate
Wondering why the head of their IT security hasn't been given the boot lol

Julian Assange is a great man. If you listen to him talk he is extremely intelligent, has a consistent philosophy that removing secrecy empowers citizens. He has broken no laws in regards too the leaks and has done the homework. For example, the reason they operate from Sweden is that it is against the law for Swedish publications to divulge their sources. The IT infrastructure is set up such that leakers leave no digital fingerprints. So if the Americans were to pressure him to reveal exactly who they are, 1) he couldn't do it and 2) it would be an assault on Swedish law. This is all US chest beating, a bunch of old dudes in Washington who don't understand technology and its capacity to change society.

It is a shame Julia G doesn't have the courage to stand up for an Australian who is innocent (even on the sexual assault charges he is innocent until proven guilty), but seems more intent on bending over for Barry O (what a weird fetish that would be - black on ginger). I hope he sues her flaming red labia off.

AFP or ASIO should investigate what Arbib told US ambassador make sure he didnt give out any state secrets.
One thing is reporting what his opinion is on how things are going but its another to be telling them upcoming things before us the PEOPLE of australia find out

Assange is copping all the poop for the leaks, but that doesn't stop the print media from jumping all over them.

And what's come out about Rudd, for example, that we didn't know already!
