Richmond AFL footballer Andrew Krakouer, accused of bashing a man outside a Fremantle nightspot last year, could plead guilty to a lesser charge, according to his lawyer.
Andrew Krakouer, 24, his younger brother Tyrone George Krakouer, 22, and co-accused Elwyn Roger Colbung, 19, have been charged with grievous bodily harm.
The trio have been accused of bashing fellow Aboriginal man Justin Robin Martin, 24, in a brawl outside a Fremantle nightclub in December last year.
In Fremantle Magistrate’s Court today, Andrew Krakouer’s lawyer said he was in negotiations with the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office to downgrade the charge and indicated his client may plead guilty to a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.
Magistrate Jacqueline Musk adjourned the case for further legal advice to July 30.
Also this morning, Tyrone Krakouer and Colbung pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct over an alleged brawl in the courtroom waiting area with members of the victim’s family in May. A trial was scheduled for February.
This morning’s court appearance was incident-free but a heavy police and security presence was put in place to stop any repeat of violence between the feuding families.
Former AFL legend and convicted drug trafficker Jim Krakouer – father to both Andrew and Tyrone – was in court to support his younger son.
