Richmond endured a 12-hour bus ride from Sydney, but says it will not be affected by the short week before its Saturday night clash against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.
The Tigers defended jumping on a bus at 8am rather than waiting for a flight amid the travel chaos that has been caused by the Chilean volcano ash.
Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale said it was a chance to bond for a young playing list.
While Richmond has only three days before flying back to Queensland, the Lions arrived home only late last night after delays.
As fate had it, Richmond could have flown home by mid-afternoon, but the club said it was not prepared to risk another night in Sydney.
"We were given a flight at 4.45pm, but it wasn't guaranteed, so we said, 'Right, we are on the bus', and the guys worked through the night to put plans in place," Gale said.
"In the circumstances it was probably a good outcome because Brisbane's afternoon flight was delayed and they wouldn't have got home until 9pm or 10pm.
"Part of going on the road is building resilience and togetherness. They have had three stops and had plenty of exercise and had the balls out and had a bit of fun with their tweets and so forth.
"It's not ideal, but it could have been worse given some people have had their travel plans thrown into chaos."
Four clubs were caught up in the air travel mayhem, with Essendon getting home from West Coast also late last night.
The Bombers got a 5pm flight from Perth, but will give Saturday's opponent North Melbourne an extra 1 1/2 days' preparation.
"We would have loved to have gone home last night, but it hasn't been the worst thing for us," coach James Hird said.
"We got to spend some time together as a group, done a good recovery session and we'll go home in a couple of hours. It's turned out OK."
North coach Brad Scott, captain Brent Harvey and players Andrew Swallow and Michael Firrito were in Queensland until Monday after a match review.
