USA camp - Tigers' tough start

By Simon Matthews
Fri 02 Dec, 2011

Richmond players have endured a gruelling day on the training track at the University of Arizona, on the first day of their pre-season camp in the USA.

A 90-minute weights session this morning was followed by a two-hour running and skills session.

Among the impressive performers on the track was Matthew Dea, who looks ready to build on his strong finish to 2011. His skills were excellent and he seems set to press for a spot in the back six in the 2012 season. Shaun Grigg was another who stood out.

The running session in blazing sunshine was a considerable challenge at the end of the day, but the performances of Ivan Maric, Steven Morris and Brandon Ellis would have pleased Richmond supporters. Dustin Martin and Brett Deledio also look in exceptional shape.

Youtube video of the first day at training in Arizona:

They aren't short of cash over there are they!  :o LOL at "one lane each" at the swimming pool.

The footy drills looked pretty sharp by the way for this time of year. I noticed in the video plenty of short hit ups to leading options. Hopefully a sign the modern way footy is being played is becoming more entrenched into the whole playing group.

Great stuff and good publicity for the Club :thumbsup. They had the poor old Ch 7 reporter out of breath on the 13km mostly uphill trek lol.

KiwiTiger on BF posting from Arizona...

Hopefully Mike Amor of Channel 7 Los Angeles, who by the way is a Tiger Man, uplifted his story in time for the 6 pm news tonight. We started at 6am with the infamous hike. The players hiked 13.7km up the Sabino Canyon outside Tucson. I say up as it was all up hill. I did 10.1km of it. The players did a special side trail of 2.6km up a steep bluff. Have to say that the players ate that up and did the total hike way ahead of expected time, which pleased Matt Hornsby.
After that, the players walked down the Canyon road back to base. I caught the special trolley bus as I was stuffed. I'd like to think I was fit but 10.1km mostly uphill on a narrow trail through a cactus lined canyon was testing for me. Club managed all the risks beautifully which was great.
This afternoon was a warm down and weights session. Odd and even shirts split on different circuits. We then had an amazing lecture from Lute Olsen, the NCAA winning coach of the Uni of Arizona Basketball team. The theme was around his team values, and the parrallels between his values and the overall premise of ours. Was a really great discussion. We then shared dinner with Lute and the key execs from the Uni of Arizona programs with our coaching staff.

Tomorrow morning is 6.30am breakfast and structure meetings, followed by ball work. Hope Ch 7 footage has made it back, and watch the Herald Sun for some key articles coming down the pipe.
