I fairly certain that all memberships are counted this year by the AFL. The reason why it is important is public perception. People believe Hawthorn to be a massive club due to their membership numbers yet they struggle to pull the crowds we do. Perspective sponsors are also fooled by these elevated membership figures. If our figure make us appear to have less supporters then the perception is we have less supporters by the general ignorant football fan...

Going really well- How many do we usually turn over family day? Should be a few and then the season is 3 weeks away will be real close if we don't get there! I think we will  :thumbsup

Membership cut off is June 30

So we have plenty of time to get to 50k

Not only that I reckon there are a number of people that just wait until they actually go to the footy to buy their membership.

Today we can do a comparison of Richmond membership tallies since 2003 (at March 9):

2003 - 25,101
2004 – 27,133
2005 – 28,029
2006 – 29,406
2007 – 30,044
2008 – 30,820
2009 - 38,790
2010 - 30,951
2011 - 36,859
2012 - 39,391

http://oneeyed-richmond.com/forum/index.php?topic=11796.msg224168#msg224168

We're now gone past the Benny Cousins bandwagon inflated figure of 2009 for this time of the year.

We're also 2,500 ahead of this time last year so still well on our the way to reaching 50k.

Sold 2,500 this week. If we can do the same for the next 3 weeks and sell 3,000 on family day we'll be 50,000 by Round 1. Very possible considering we are probably 39,700 after today

Update:

Collingwood       64,000
Hawthorn          50,869
West Coast       50,646
Adelaide            41,910
Essendon          41,473
Richmond          39,700
Carlton              36,364
Geelong             32,975
Port Adelaide      30,056
St Kilda              28,084
Melbourne          26,023
North Melb.        25,101
W.Bulldogs         23,698
Sydney              22,825
Brisbane            15,856
Gold Coast        10,016
GWS                   7,011

We'll be 40,000 even before family day. Should sell at least 2,000 on Sunday. Might be on 45,000 in a weeks time. That'll give us another 2 weeks until Round 1 and a chance for 50,000 for the start of the season. We should aim for 55,000 this year now

Comparing the figures on the table for the Ben Cousins hype in 2009 and this year there is only a 600 membership differential.
Barring a massive fallout in the next two weeks of pre season and a horrendous start to the season of lets say 2009 proportions 50K is easily attainable and 53 should be the conservative mark we should be looking at.

Nice to be optimistic champ but I'll take the official figures. I'll go with the official website.
Interesting to see what the figure will be on Tuesday after Family Day.

Yeah, it's just an approx. figure. But it'll be alot closer to 39,700 than 39,391  :P

All clubs could argue they are ahead of their officially published figure and pull a number out of the air. Better to stick to the official figure.

We're definitely catching up to the Bombers. About a month ago we were 7000 behind them and now it's down to 2000. Given the capacity restraints of Docklands and Footy Park hopefully we will pass both the Dons and Crows into 4th spot in the new few weeks. We have also widened the gap between us and Carlton out to 3000  :thumbsup.
