You're a good man, Smokey. Good post. Still, I don't think the Lions' backline is the problem. Like us a few years ago they have a lot of young kids (and some donkeys) but they will get better. I'm sure Voss would love two Merrett's. I'd love him at Richmond.

Fair enough Coach, a difference of opinion is what makes the world go around!  FWIW if Merrett was a couple of years younger I would have him at Richmond in a heartbeat and I know that he is still one of Voss' key men but I just think that he wouldn't be the best fit for us right now.

Adelaide has joined the race for Cloke.

As for what's on the table from other clubs, Robbo has Richmond offering $1m over 5 years as an example.

Adelaide hovers over Travis Cloke

    Mark Robinson
    From: Herald Sun
    August 10, 2012

ADELAIDE has joined the fight for Travis Cloke, prompted by fears it may lose Kurt Tippett to either Brisbane or Gold Coast.

The Crows are the sixth club to make contact with Cloke's management.

Of the six - Fremantle, Melbourne, Richmond, Carlton, Greater Western Sydney and now Adelaide - three have tabled offers and the other three have indicated they will, or else have a strong interest in the power forward.

The offers will range from about $950,000 a season to $1.1 million over five years.

The Magpies' offer is about $800,000 a season over four years with a fifth year available on an incentive-based formula.

The Cloke situation will heat up from October 1 when he becomes a restricted free agent.

The Cloke camp has from October 1 to October 19 to table an offer from a rival club - for example, Richmond at $1 million a year over five years.

The Magpies have until October 22 to match the offer.

Collingwood has tabled an offer that has been refused by Cloke's management.

It's clear the Magpies won't match any rival offer for Cloke.

The difference between the best offer and Collingwood's offer is about $1.7 million over five years.

Yeah I would love Merritt too CD. I have been on the Merritt wagon for a while now, love the way he goes about it at both ends.

On the Cloke note, it's great to see the Tigers have put an offer forward, I really hope we get Cloke...let the games begin.... :gotigers

Where does it say we've "put an offer forward"?

It says we are one of 6 clubs to contact his management and of those six; 3 have put formal offers on the table. Doesn't say one of them is us. From previous reports though we know Freo is one of those 3

It then use the RFC as example of what another club could offer Travi$.

All journalistic speculation at this time

Yes ok then WP..

An example, yes, but we will put an offer in and it should be in this ballpark, IMO!!

I see you have increased your view on what cloke is worth WAT.
you would be an auctioneers dream.

What collonwoood have offered is a fair offer IMO.

$1m for 5 years is a big price and he would want to earn it if someone paid it, particularly if that someone was us

Agree Al, 1m for 5 yrs is a lot. 800k over 5 yrs is plenty.
If he wants 1m a season then that's fine for the first 4 years and then performance based For the 5th year. Its still 200 more a season than pies and he may still make the same in the final year. If he wants it he needs to deliver.

Save 800k

I'm happy to get him, but we have bigger issues than just needing a fuctioning fwd line. One of thos is depth and leadership.

So much fuss over 800k or $1m.
The key issue for me is do we want him or not?
The re$t can be worked out by the money men at the RFC.
Cloke is a required player IMO.

Agreed, regardless if you like him as a person or his family, he is a gun player that would improve our forward half dramatically. He has plenty of years in front of him also.

If he came in and performed, then what you pay for him would be be quickly forgotten.
On the other hand, if he only gave average return, for what you tie up in your salary cap, for 5 years, then you have long lasting ramifications.

with a salary cap, return for investment becomes important

No I have increased my view on what a GF is worth.

Whats 200k difference, is it the difference in money or flag prospects al??

BTW Every player we recruit has the "average return" prospect, 3 years or 5 years, not much difference, look what we have been stuck with in the past...some for longer  than 5 years and no where near the calibre of Cloke. An average day out for Cloke is a great day out for a few of our current players.

Difference in money. I don't think paying Cloke 1m instead of 800k is going to make our flag prospects higher
