That is crap about Mitchell. He is a star and deserves any accolades he receives.
Congrats to both players. I only hope they make a big deal of it all.

AFL Commission statement on 2012 Brownlow Medal

afl.com.au
November 15, 2016 5:30 PM

THE AFL Commission met on Tuesday November 15 and ruled on the 2012 Brownlow Medal.

The Commission noted that Jobe Watson announced last Friday, November 11, that he would hand back the Brownlow Medal, to honour the history of the award.

The Commission believes that Jobe's decision was a noble one. In respecting the values of the competition, and putting the interests of the game before his own, Jobe has shown his commitment to fair play – the qualities of a champion.

The Commission ruled that Jobe Watson was not eligible for the 2012 Brownlow Medal and that, in accordance with AFL Regulations, the 2012 Brownlow winners are Trent Cotchin and Sam Mitchell.

The AFL forwarded its decision to all three players today.

Mr Fitzpatrick said that the status of the Brownlow Medal was uppermost in the view of the Commission in making the decision.

"The Brownlow Medal is the most prestigious individual award in our game, and celebrates the competition's best and fairest player," he said.

"In stepping forward and handing back the medal, Jobe Watson demonstrated a willingness to consider the game beyond his own personal situation. At all times, Jobe has carried himself with dignity and remained true to the values that he has based his life around.

"The impact of this decision on him and his family is one of great sadness for the game.

"Essendon has apologised to Jobe and his family for the position in which they have placed their club champion.

"I wish to repeat the words I said in January earlier this year when the 34 past and present Essendon players were found guilty by the Court of Arbitration of Sport. The program at the Essendon Football Club in 2012 was a stain on our game – and it has had a terrible impact on the players and the Essendon Football Club," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

"We can all agree that the players should never have been subject to this program, and they have suffered a big penalty for the trust they showed in people who have let them down.

"What occurred at Essendon in 2012 has struck at the very heart of our game – the integrity of the competition, and the health and safety of the players.

Mr Fitzpatrick said Tuesday was also a day to recognise and celebrate two champions of the game.

"As the highest-placed eligible vote-getters, Sam Mitchell and Trent Cotchin were formally declared the joint winners of the 2012 Brownlow Medal," he said.

"Sam and Trent are deserving Brownlow Medallists for the quality of their play in 2012, and the Commission wishes to pass on the congratulations of the entire football community for their performances."

Mr Fitzpatrick said the Commission had resolved that the players will be presented with their medals in Melbourne next month by the AFL Commission as part of its December meeting, with their families and other guests present.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the AFL Commission wished to clearly re-state for the record that it accepted the ruling of CAS and the verdict of the Swiss Court, and was committed to clean sport.

"On behalf of the AFL Commission I want to send a clear and unequivocal message that nothing comes ahead of the need to safeguard the fairness of our competition," he said.

"The very essence of sport demands it. The pursuit of on-field success can never be allowed to obscure a commitment to the principles of player welfare and competition integrity."

Cotchin, Mitchell accept medals with 'mixed emotions'

AFL.com.au
15 November 2016

RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin and former Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell have accepted the 2012 Brownlow Medal with "mixed emotions" after the AFL Commission ruled they would be named joint winners.

Cotchin, who enjoyed his finest season in 2012, becomes the Tigers' fifth Brownlow medallist and the youngest in club history, having played out the 2012 season as a 22-year-old.

Mitchell adds the medal to his extensive trophy cabinet alongside his four premiership medallions and five club champion awards.

The 34-year-old becomes the Hawks' fifth Brownlow medallist and first since Shane Crawford in 1999.

Cotchin paid tribute to Essendon star Jobe Watson, who handed back the 2012 Brownlow Medal last week after failing to overturn charges arising from the Bombers' supplements program.

"I accept the 2012 Brownlow Medal with mixed emotions," Cotchin said in a statement on Tuesday.

"But I also respect the decision of the AFL Commission and the award that is the Brownlow Medal.

"This has been a difficult time for Jobe, but I have great respect for him, and the decision he made in very tough circumstances."

Mitchell, who joined West Coast in the recent NAB AFL Trade Period, said he was torn by the circumstances but accepted the medal.

"I'm honoured to be named a Brownlow medallist today but at the same time I feel enormous empathy for Jobe Watson and his family," he said in a statement released by the Eagles.

Cotchin and Mitchell polled 26 votes in 2012 to finish joint runners-up, with Cotchin averaging a career-high 27.5 possessions and winning the Tigers' best and fairest award.

Mitchell averaged 27.2 disposals that year and picked up his fourth Peter Crimmins Medal as the Hawks' best and fairest.

Richmond President Peggy O'Neal paid tribute to Cotchin for a fine 2012 season, which ended with his ascension to the Richmond captaincy.

"We are proud of Trent, he's a fine captain, player and person, and he is now Richmond's fifth Brownlow medallist," O'Neal said.

Champion midfielder Ian Stewart (1971) was Richmond's most recent Brownlow medallist, while ruckman Roy Wright won the prestigious award twice (1952, 1954).

Wingman Stan Judkins (1930) and former captain Bill Morris (1948) are the club's other winners.

Mitchell, 34, joins Col Austen (1949), Robert DiPierdomenico (1986), John Platten (1987) and Shane Crawford (1999) as Hawthorn Brownlow winners.

The insane numbers behind duo’s brilliant years

Sarah Olle and Ben Waterworth
FOX SPORTS
15 November 2016

AT TIMES it’s hard to remember what the world looked like four years ago.

No Donald Trump as president elect. No premiership for the Western Bulldogs since 1954. And no Brownlow Medal for Sam Mitchell or Trent Cotchin.

But a lot can change in four years.

So here’s a little reminder as to how the season panned out for our newly crowned Brownlow medallists.

Mitchell polled in 12 matches in 2012 including four best on grounds. Cotchin polled in just nine games but collected three votes in five of them.

The Tigers onballer was much-maligned in 2016, but the case couldn’t have been more opposite when he finished four votes behind Jobe Watson in the Brownlow.

He had career-high averages in almost every statistical category imaginable in 2012.

It stands as Cotchin's best AFL season.

His average of 27.6 possessions was the best of his career, as was his average inside 50s (5.3), Champion Data ranking points (116.3), tackles (4.9), total goals (21) and contested possessions (12.4).

It was a belter of a season for the Richmond skipper, who polled 11 of his 26 votes in the final four matches of the season.

The story was much the same for Mitchell, the Hawk turned Eagle, who was one of the protagonists in Hawthorn’s stunning 2012 season.

While Mitchell didn’t average career-high possessions, he had career-highs in goal assists (1.2), tackles (5.5), disposal efficiency (75.2 per cent), inside 50s (4.2) and clearances (6.4).

Mitchell fought Brad Sewell (13) and Lance Franklin (12) for votes in a number of matches, as well as Cyril Rioli and Shaun Burgoyne, who polled six votes each.

Cotchin had company of his own, with Brett Deledio (13), Shaun Grigg (11) and Shane Tuck (10) all picking up handy votes.

With numbers like these it’s of little surprise Mitchell and Cotchin won their respective best and fairests comfortably in 2012.

But it’s this latest honour which will propel them among some of the game’s greatest players.

Trent Cotchin’s 2012

Average kicks: 16.9 (career-high)

Average inside 50s: 5.3 (career-high)

Average disposals: 27.6 (career-high)

Champion Data ranking points: 116.3 (career-high)

Tackles: 4.9 (career-high)

Goals: 21 (career-high)

Contested possessions: 12.4 (career-high)

Uncontested possessions: 14.9 (career-high)

Sam Mitchell’s 2012

Average goal assists: 1.2 (career-high)

Tackles: 5.5 (career-high)

Disposal efficiency: 75.2 per cent (career-high)

Inside 50s: 4.2 (career-high)

Clearances: 6.4 (career-high)

Contested possessions: 12.5

Uncontested possessions: 14.9

Out of interest, the Herald-Sun had Cotchin winning outright with the Essendon 34 excluded from the count.

FINAL REVISED 2012 BROWNLOW LEADERBOARD

28 Trent Cotchin

26 Sam Mitchell, Scott Thompson

25 Dane Swan

24 Gary Ablett, Patrick Dangerfield

19 Dayne Beams, Lenny Hayes, Josh P Kennedy

The count came down to the crucial Bombers v Tigers game in Round 8. With Jobe Watson (who polled one vote) and Brent Stanton (two) out of the equation, Cotchin is bumped up to the two-vote slot and David Zaharakis was given one vote. Those two for Cotchin proved the difference against Sam Mitchell who didn't steal any votes from his clash against the Bombers in Round 18, when he polled two behind Cyril Rioli .

I am not sure if I am right but before Trent was awarded the medal were we the club with the longest drought regarding winning the medal. Congratulations to Trent but a strange way to win the medal.

Think that's correct, with the exception of Freo and GWS who have never had a brownlow winner?
