The thing I cannot understand is after a huge preseason, how do you come out and give that effort. You have been busting your balls for months to get fitter and stronger and that's what they serve up. Surely there is more than half a side that needs to show the coach they can preform at that level. What a waste for most players on the cusp.
What it really showed me is those players we all have question marks over, have not improved. And more than likely never will.
Players like Griffiths, Astbury, Helbig, and even Aaron Edwards were IMO very disappointing! These guys have had a taste of AFL footy and know what is needed but still serve up what they did. IMO all four of these blokes will never be a part of anything good at Tigerland. They have all been on our list or another but struggle at every opportunity.
The other thing I think gets missed in all this is our membership drive, we are traveling so well with memberships but a lose like this doesn't do anything to help that. You put a side out there to take care of business and win by 50 odd and membership still keeps on tracking nicely. An effort like that just puts doubts in people's minds that were thinking on maybe buying a membership this year because maybe things have changed at Tigerland.
Win every game you play Tigers, like loosing becomes a habit, so does winning.

Seriously though contrast to Hawthorn is stark.

More so when you consider the finals loss should have been in our guts all summer.

Old mate. Hawthorn got done in all their pre-season games last year, including losses to the dogs and the lions. Hawks went on to win the flag. Dogs and lions were bottom 4.
The hawks winning this year might just be a bad sign for them.

Yeah I hear you and it's a fair point but I think the manner in which 2013 finished for us would have dictated more effort.

Good to see Hardwick finally adjust our attacking gameplan last year -  now long overdue for him to do likewise with our defensive gameplan. Has changed barely one iota in 4 years and teams will start to find it out just as North, Carlton & now Melbourne already have.

Can't continue just let us live and die by his precious be-all and end-all zone. One idea would be man up when sides are chipping it around and denying us possession. Hardly revolutionary, it should at least be every sides's default setting or safety catch - and it usually is, particularly when momentum swings against them. Hardwick however just sits on his hands seemingly content to place all his faith in the corral. That's great if this were a rodeo, but it's football and football teams are generally at least smarter than bovines and smart, patient sides just turn it into a game of forcings back. Quick sides just outrun us as the likes of Grigg, Houli & Newman stand and point until Morris gets caught out of position and Rance falls over or one of the aforementioned gives away a stupid free within range.

Also our tackling is still abysmal - is there a side in the AFL that has it's tackles broken or allows opponents to stand in the tackle and still get a disposal away as often as we do?

For mine tackling reflects attitude and attitude reflects leadership.

Didn't think we'd miss Mcguane this much.

All jokes aside A Edwards is not the answer. He misses the important goals and is far too easily beaten when matched up against taller defenders. Love to see rather Lloyd, McBean or Guff claim this spot
Agree on Edwards.Would rather get game time in someone younger as you mentioned.

Never missed when he was at Nought. :whistle

Attitude.

Our pressure around the football and opposition was poor.

Didn't take our opportunities up forward.

Set shots in the second half needs to be addressed.

Lacking a quick, smart, skillful small forward.

Exactly.

Its pointless not trying, and doesnt make sense that we would not try.

We were beaten by a better team on the day. End of story

I think they tried.  Just didn't try as much as they could.
Why should they?  Nothing to be gained by over stretching and causing injury.  There isn't even a cup at the end to win!
I think that the team will slowly ramp up their efforts so they are at 100% by round 1.  That game is no easy win as the GC Suns will be absolutely desperate to win first up in front of their home crowd. It certainly is a must win game/8-12-16 point game!!!

I watched the game.

Older blokes blowing out cobwebs.

Younger blokes getting a run in the legs.

Some cusp players having a go.

Coaching staff clearly trying some new ideas.

Hardly worth thinking about too much, let alone worrying about...
