Our aging list - a problem coming very soon
« on: April 06, 2014, 08:37:21 AM »
This is how old some of our players will be during season 2015 if we dont decide to trade/delist at the end of this season.

15 guys at or a few years off retirement age. Most of which kept getting named in our best 22 atm.

We need to keep getting games into kids wherever possible

Chris Newman 33

Brett Deledio   28

Shaun Grigg   27

Ricky Petterd    27

Bachar Houli   27

Chris Knights 28

Shaun Hampson   27

Matt Thomas 28

Ivan Maric 29

Dan Jackson   29

Troy Chaplin   29

Aaron Edwards 31

Jake King 31

Orren Stephenson 33

Nathan Foley    30

Brett Deledio is still 26. He turns 27 on April 18. He has shown longevity. He is NOWHERE near retirement.
Houli is 25 and turns 26 next month. Again, he is not old.
You may as well say this for all the teams. In 2015 only the GWS and GC will have the majority of their list below 25.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

The biggest problem about that list is there is only one player that is better than average.

I don't see the issue? The sooner they hit 30+ and stuff off the better. (For most of them)

Deledio is 26 so his football life is not quite over as of yet

The only old players that side should be regularly: Maric deledio cotchin Riewoldt, maybe Morris.

Grigg and co. should not be non droppable. Just due to being seniors players / coach favourites

Newman Edwards Thomas King Stephenson and Foley should all be retired at the end of the season IMHO and replaced by Kids coming through the draft.

Ramps you're spot on with the Moneyball policy.

I'm guessing it was a club decision / direction that they thought was the best thing to compete with GC and GWS as next year GC will be playing finals this year and then looking at top 4 next year and GWS are a year behind them.

If this season continues the way it is, I'd look at doing a Hawthorn and looking to get some gun kids in exchange for our experienced players, Cotchin should be the oldest player in premiership tilt IMO. We stuffed up the 2005 and 06 draft which means Deledio will most likely miss out. I'm a big fan of Brett but I wonder what Fremantle would give up for Deledio in 1-2 years time trying to keep there premiership window open. I know it wouldn't be a popular decision but its just an example of some of the hard decisions the club would need to make if we want to beat GC and GWS cause we are not ready yet.
