February 23, 2015 A $1.5 MILLION redevelopment of Whitten Oval that’s bringing AFL football back to the historic ground will be ready by kick-off this weekend.
The Western Bulldogs will host Richmond Tigers in a twilight NAB Challenge AFL match this Saturday, in an iconic return to its former home ground.
It will be the first AFL-sanctioned match at the venue since Round 21 in 1997.
The upgrade will bring the oval’s match day facilities up to VFL standard, with new change rooms, coaches’ boxes and ground lighting improvements.
It will allow the Footscray Bulldogs to host more home games, up from five last year to at least nine this season.
Bulldogs acting chief executive Michael Quinn said as part of the development, perimeter fencing had been put up to create a safe environment to host larger scale community events, festivals and sporting fixtures.
“The venue will continue to remain open to the public as it has in the past, with numerous access points present across all sides of the precinct,” Mr Quinn said.
He said the upgrade would provide training facilities for the Victorian Women’s Football League and support the WRFL Youth Girls competition.
