Are international rookies in their own category still? U used to be able to have 8 rookies but 4 were internationals.

No idea but recall seeing the name chucked around during last year's trade period.

Good enough for a rookie spot...would rather take a kid or someone like Shane Nelson though.

Full name    Ashley Smith
Date of birth    20 July 1990 (age 24)
Original team    Dandenong Stingrays (TAC Cup)
Draft    36th pick, 2008 National Draft
Height/Weight    186 cm / 85 kg
Position(s)    Midfielder, defender

Ashley Smith (born 20 July 1990) is an Australian rules footballer who previously played for the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). Making his debut for the club during the 2010 season, he played 45 games as a midfielder and running defender before being delisted at the end of the 2014 season. From Victoria, Smith was recruited from the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, and has also played at WAFL level for both Perth and East Perth.

Football career
Smith was accepted into the AIS-AFL Academy before playing for Vic Metro in the National Under-18 Championships. He then represented the Dandenong Stingrays in the TAC Cup, missing most of the first part of the season before starring in the second half, including the preliminary final. At the 2008 AFL Draft Camp, Smith impressed talent scouts with his speed and long-kicking abilities, placing first in the 20 metre sprint, sixth in the 30 metre repeat sprints, and tenth in the standing vertical jump, and consistently kicking over 50 metres.[1] Smith was selected by West Coast with Pick 36 in the 2008 AFL Draft, after being predicted to go as high as the first round.[2] He made his debut for West Coast in round 15 of the 2010 season against Adelaide at Subiaco Oval, gaining 19 disposals and four marks off the half-back flank, and scoring a goal from 55 metres out.[3]

Smith was delisted by West Coast at the end of the 2014 season.[4] He had played at AFL level only twice during the season.[5]

Quick and kicks long, don't mind him in theory.

no hes not. liked him as a junior but cant kick and makes too many poor decisions. id rather give adam carter a go. not sure why they delisted him he looked okay to me when given a go.
the one i would have targeted was schofield. was unhappy and under simpson was not getting a go.

no hes not. .

Yes he is. There' more than one kind of rookie - he's the Maric & Banfield variety( he's better than Banfumbles ) - the kind that showed glimpses early on, has been in the system has an asset we need (in this case pace) and are - or at least should be- desperate & hungry for a second chance - the kind you only give one year to prove themselves and pee 'em off if they haven't earnt a permanent upgrade by the end of the season. That's rookie list quality. As long as we keep turning them over. Like I said - would still rather a kid or a Nelson type. Agree about Schofield....havent' seen enough of Carter.

Mate of mine is heavily involved in the Perth footy club and had this to say about Smith:

He played for my WAFL team Perth before the WAFL/FWCE affiliation with East Perth and struggled to make it there as well. Very slow in the mind and only good at turnovers. When he was delisted by the FWCE, he could have gone back to Perth but they wouldn't offer him a contract so he went back to Vic. Perth finished last and have since lost the coach and 7 players not counting draftees of which we will have at least two and they still didn't want Smith. Just shows our lack of thinking as to the type of players we have an opinion of. Smith isn't quick, turns it over, slow on the think and not very tough yet we have him training. His only asset is he has some great tattoos.

I had a carpenter working for me for a while and he had a couple of young fellas working for him and one was Ash's brother. I had a couple of chats with him about this brother and how he got to be at West Coast, so after that kept an eye on him due to the young fella I had met. And to be honest didn't rate him at all. Just an average player with not much upside IMO. Surely we can do better.

Still trying to work out why it is that ever since the club said footskills were going to be a priority when targeting players, we've seemigly done the exact opposite and brought in so many poor kicks?
