If the Lions get a 2nd round pick for Lewis Taylor from Sydney as reported on the AFL site yesterday and we get a 4th rounder for Butler I will spew up.

incredible isnt it

will happen just like lloyd, but in butlers case he is a better player than lewis

Absolutely correct. I think the rest of the competition view us as bargain basement, reject shop for handy players.

Personally I think we should keep Butler & Menadue to base level contracts plus match payments if they would stay.

The problem is they will be getting significantly more at St Kilda and Freo respectively. That’s why we are giving them away. Our TPP is at its limit. We can’t afford to keep them and the other clubs know and that’s why we are getting low balled.
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

We're playing the long game by the look of it. Showing we care more about our players and their best interests even if they are leaving will be seen positively by any future free agents and recruits looking for a club to move to. They'll more likely choose Richmond over opposition clubs (eg: Tom Lynch) given the way we've gone about things on and off-field over the past 3 years which has built a reputation across the footy world of a strong happy club and culture that people want to belong to.

Compare us and our open honest approach to how other clubs have disgracefully treated their players during this trade period. We're not holding our players at our club against their will as pawns to ransom or sneakily out of the blue offering them up for trade behind their backs after publicly saying all year how much they were love and wanted.

Becoming No.1 in the AFL hasn't been a fluke. It has been a total positive cultural shift. If letting a couple of fringe players go for nix because that is in their best interests means we get another Lynch, Pickett, Stack, Soldo, etc ... all for free in the near future leading to another flag or two then I won't be complaining  :thumbsup.

Relies on a rock solid succession plan post Cotchin, Edwards, Jack, Rance and Bachar retiring over the next 2-3 years.

..and continuing the (almost) flawless recruiting..which not even the best run clubs have managed over a sustained period....(not counting Sydney's COLA & academy free kicks) let alone with just a bunch of later picks year after year...but hey if people think we're going to keep finding Grahams outside the third round & Bakers, Stacks & Picketts outside the ND every year, let them fantasize...:shh

"Hopefully as things fall in the next day or so something can happen and Butts (Dan Butler) makes his way to the Saints. St Kilda has still got the Brad Hill situation to deal with first."

St Kilda now have picks 10, 76, 82 from this draft and a 1st, 2nd and two future 4th rounders (theirs & Port's).

So if it's a simple trade of a late pick for Butler then it's a choice of 76 this draft or one of the two future 4th rounders.

Saints list boss, James Gallagher didn't say much at all about the Butler trade except to say it's progressing "okay".

I'd take Ports next year 4th rounder.
