DEFENDERS -  Tarrant, Balta, Grimes, Vlastuin, Broad, Rioli. Then Short along with Gibcus, Brown, Banks, HRS, Smith.

MIDS - Taranto, Prestia, Hopper, Martin, Cotchin, Bolton, Sonsie. Then Ross, Graham, Baker, Short.

WING - Pickett, McIntosh, HRS, Banks, Short.

FORWARD - Lynch - Riewoldt, Cumberland, M Rioli, Bolton, Martin, Taranto, Sonsie, Clarke possibly Miller fwd/ruck . Then Castagna, Campbell, Short.

They are close to the pecking order imo in each area.

So what you're saying is he's a walk up start because he can play across all four lines?

I’d slide baker ahead of short in defence as that’s what the coaches prefer based on end of last season and pre season. I’d personally have baker mid/fwd as you’ve shown.

I’d also defs have short ahead of Hugo and banks on the wing. Can’t think of anything Hugo offers more than short other than speed and haven’t seen banks at AFL level. I’d personally trial sonsie there as I think he has all the attributes - strong overhead mark, beautiful kick on either side, don’t think he has the tank of the others but that can be developed.

As for the forward line, yeah I don’t think he’ll be spending any time there but for arguments sake of still prefer him to Castagna and never seen Campbell play.

Agree he’s on the edge across all lines but I think the fact that he can contribute across all works in his favour. Very much see baker/short/Miller as utility types who may start on the coaches preferred line but can be shifted around as the game dictates maybe due to injury or a player being tagged out of the game or just to try something different.

Lol maybe as a sub. The old saying of okay at all things but master of none comes to mind.
Fmd Miller can play fwd Ruck and kpd and in anyones language is more important to structure is he a walk up start. If it  came to it Miller or Short i know who id pick and for all the right reasons.

In all four roles there are better credentialled players than Jayden. As i have already said his ability to perform reasonably well in all of them still leaves him behind those who are better at the singular role.

The blokes in the back half all get a gig in front of him imo. so lets do it

B:   Vlastuin - Tarrant - Grimes
HB: Broad - Balta - Rioli.

Lets not kid ourselves every day of the week these six are the backline now that Gibcus is injured. He may be the next cab off the rank if Rioli gets hurt but exactly at what stage do we pick one of the kids we have explicitly drafted as hb.
Lets also put our long term hats on!!!!. Brown is talked up big time by the club and a pick 17 to boot.  Probably only size holding him back last year.
Another year in, another preseason and we would be dumb dumb dumb not to be looking at him especially after all the club spiel as the next big thing at H/B... You seem to think its some sort of specialist position but refuse to acknowledge just how much freedom it provides Rioli and before him Short Ellis Houli.

We have to find a good balance of oldies and youngsters and play the promising kids in their best roles or maybe you think development of kids doesnt matter. Why draft specialist defenders and then not play them.

C: Pickett - Taranto - McIntosh
Wings okay i will keep it short for once. No way is he being picked in front of Pickett or McIntosh on a wing, and thats  as much as i think McIntosh is replaceable. Always thought wing was a place we could play kids as well. Banks and Ralphsmith should be getting a look in in the role and even Brown.. It is a place we can play these types and get some afl games into them.

Not going to continue on too much.

Mids - Taranto, Cotchin, Prestia, Hopper, Martin, Bolton and Sonsie. there is no more needed.  if picking mids he is well down the order if say him playing mid meant Sonsie missed then it would be a mistake and wrong.

Same story with the fwds why would we pick Short or Baker or Graham in front of Rioli or Cumberland or even Clarke for that matter.all specialist small fwds and better with their forward craft.

The bench or sub well this is where his versatility can help him so for me he's  somewhere between best 19 to 24.

Miller Baker Sonsie are bench it doesnt leave many spots left.

Outside runner Jayden Short will miss at least another week with his calf concern, with Hardwick conceding “in hindsight” the Tigers rushed him back from his initial calf injury in the pre-season.

“Probably a good call (to rule Short out for this week); calves, once you get towards the age of 30, start to get a bit more delicate. We do take the extra week so they can nag,” he said.

“In hindsight, you’d probably say yes (we did rush him), but once again we had a pretty good training block where we thought we’d get him right.

“It was probably aggravated by a corkie in the other leg, which meant his gait changed, so it compounded things. All in all it is easy to look back, but we’d probably go the same way.”

From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column:

IF ...
Lynch, Nank, Graham, Broad, Tarrant and Gibcus have been on the injured/unavailable list ...

THEN ...
Jayden Short getting himself off it is massive. The best-and-fairest in a premiership year (2020) has been a huge out.

Been good having this bloke back, he's been clean picking up the ball and providing loads of run, winning territory very well.

The big Short (influence)

Richmond has been hit hard by injuries this season but the impact of Jayden Short's absence became extra clear upon his return on Monday night. Short had missed the Tigers' previous three games with a calf injury (all of which were defeats) but he was back to some of his best against the Demons. The 27-year-old was terrific, particularly in the first three quarters, gathering 30 disposals and having a game-high 644 metres gained.

Source: AFL website.

30 disposals (21k, 9h, 8c, 22u, 76.7% eff.)
7 marks
3 tackles
4 inside 50s
644 metres gained
9 intercepts
4 score involvements
1 goal assist
1 behind
84% time on ground

Was our best last night.

Anyone who chooses not to see his worth to the side is living under a rock

We are a better side with Short out there

Lol he shat his pants how many times panic attacks and just coffed the ball back especially first half. How many goals did he cost us.

You take the good with the bad with him but supporters clearly are blinkered and only ever see the good. He is literally as soft as they come as well.

Was a decent game and did his usual outside job. But fmd the numbers sugarcoat an awful lot.

Short is by far out best kick, the idea of trade bait is absolutely madness. We are an ordinary kicking side with him, without him we saw just how below average we are at moving the footy. He'd be top 3-4 most important players by far. Loved seeing him back.
Go Tigers!
