Would offer Hurley something like 5-6 years @ $650-700k.

Great player but anything over that amount I would consider detrimental to the list as a whole looking to the future. It will damage our ability to chase further players to achieve the depth we are clearly lacking.

Maybe just a long contract on "fair" money will be enough.

I thought $500k a year for Betts was ridiculous money....

We need to loosen the purse strings

That's why you have things like front loaded & back ended contracts and that's where the best list managers earn their keep....

Please.

We need a genuine ruck, another genuine key forward, another genuine key defender, a/another genuine small forward (Rioli looks good) and probably 2-3 tough midfielders with big bodies.

So you wanna go and throw the sink at a single key defender? How much would YOU pay him?

We have so many list deficiencies right now that I think we need to consider a semi-rebuild and unless we offload some top-end talent (think Lids almost cooked and Cotchin not a great captain/attacking footballer) we won't have anywhere near enough money to chase depth in these areas unless we keep playing moneyball...

If we were ONE or TWO players short then no probably we could probably afford to splash out...

As I said, it's where the best list managers earn their keep....other clubs with better lists and more valuable players than us still manage these type of deals all the time....

By offering $650-700k/year I'm talking about a negotiable starting point.

$700k is fine, hell even $800k is.

But how high are you prepared to go?

All the way.
Get rid of Grigg. ($350k), Houli ($300k), Chaplin ($400k)
3 guys that should be gone anyway.
That should just about do it.
